Two soldiers of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and three civilians have been charged with conspiring to break into the private residence of Major General George Okumu Opondo in Kitengela, Kajiado County, between March 18 and March 25, 2026. The suspects were allegedly found in possession of implements including crowbars, hammers, a knife and pliers, as well as KDF jungle attire.
Sergeant Charles Kiio Matata was immediately taken into military police custody after appearing at the Milimani Law Courts, where he is to face a court martial on separate allegations of desertion. His co-accused—among them a civilian mechanic employed by the KDF—were granted bond of KSh1 million each, with an alternative cash bail of KSh500,000.
Investigators informed the court that the group was allegedly acting in concert with other military officers in a suspected plot to eliminate Major General Opondo. Police are said to have mounted an ambush near the general’s residence after receiving intelligence about the planned attack.
The presiding magistrate directed that the matter will be heard on April 29, 2026, with vehicles, mobile phones and items of military attire seized from the suspects retained as exhibits.
