A security officer has been arrested after a shooting at a bar in Masaka District left a two-year-old child dead and two adults seriously injured.
The incident occurred during a chaotic confrontation at a bar in Kyesiiga Sub-county, where witnesses say a group of youths disrupted a karaoke event by allegedly stealing mobile phones and assaulting patrons, sparking panic.
The deceased has been identified as Ashiraf Mbazira, a toddler who was struck by a stray bullet and died at the scene. His mother, Aisha Kisakyamukama, and another resident, Gerald Kiweewa (alias Bamu), were also hit by gunfire and are receiving treatment for serious injuries.
According to witnesses, the security officer, identified as Ogwal, drew his firearm during the chaos and fired several shots. He claims he fired into the air to disperse an angry mob that was attempting to lynch a suspected phone thief. However, the bullets struck the victims instead.
Kyesiiga Sub-county Chairperson Mikidadi Lusiiba said local leaders immediately alerted senior police officials. He also urged bar owners to improve security by hiring trained personnel from licensed private security companies or the police to help manage crowds and prevent similar tragedies.
The officer has since been arrested and is being held to assist with ongoing investigations. Meanwhile, some local residents have disputed his account, alleging the shooting may have stemmed from a personal dispute involving a woman who was at the bar, although police had not confirmed those claims by press time.
