Police officer kills himself after shooting two in Kampala

Police in Katwe are investigating a shooting at Freedom City along Entebbe Road in which a police officer shot and injured a woman and a private security guard before dying at the scene on Sunday.

The officer, identified as PPC Saul Ayijuka, allegedly shot Florence Akankunda, 23, and a private security guard before turning the gun on himself.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said preliminary findings indicate that the incident may have been linked to a previous relationship between Ayijuka and Akankunda.

Akankunda sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh and was rushed to hospital for treatment.

The injured security guard was also taken to hospital.
Police recovered an AK-47 rifle, ammunition and spent cartridges from the scene, which was secured and documented. Ayijuka’s body was conveyed to Mulago Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the events that preceded it and the officer’s relationship with the woman.
