Singer and footballer Derrick Ddungu, popularly known as Rickman, marked his return to competitive football in style, scoring on his Express FC debut as the Red Eagles defeated KCCA FC 2-0 in the Uganda Premier League Kampala Derby at Nakivubo on Thursday night.
Rickman, who continues to pursue music as a side hustle, came off the bench in the second half and needed just five minutes to announce himself on the football pitch.
With Express leading 1-0, the substitute was given space to receive the ball at a tight angle before squeezing an effort past KCCA goalkeeper Mutwalib Mugolofa at the near post to seal the victory.
The goal sparked wild celebrations from Rickman, who removed his jersey as he soaked in a moment that marked a significant chapter in his football comeback.
Isaac Wagoina had earlier given Express the lead six minutes into the second half after being played through by Aaron Mutebi. Wagoina beat Maxwell Owachgiu before calmly slotting the ball past Mugolofa.
Express had struggled in the opening half, with KCCA looking the more threatening side but failing to convert their chances.
Shafik Nana Kwikiriza was denied by Express goalkeeper Mathias Kigonya, who later produced another important save to keep out Charles Lwanga. Saidi Mayanja also came close when his effort rattled the woodwork.
Rickman’s return to competitive football comes nearly a decade after a knee injury prematurely ended his playing career in 2016 while he was featuring in Sweden.
The setback eventually saw him pursue music, where he built a name for himself as an artiste. However, football remained his main sporting ambition, and his Express debut has now provided a memorable return to the game.
The victory handed Express their first win of the season, while KCCA suffered their second consecutive defeat after losing 2-0 to NEC FC in their opening match at Lugogo.
Artiste Bebe Cool was also in attendance to support his son, Alpha Thierry Ssali, who started for KCCA against his former club. Ssali was substituted in the second half after showing promise in attack.
