Police have opened investigations into the death of a man accused of orchestrating a rental fraud scheme after he was allegedly assaulted by a mob following his apprehension at a bank branch in Kampala, nearly two weeks after authorities initially dismissed reports about the incident.

The deceased, identified as Fahad Lubega, 30, is alleged to have posed as a property agent and defrauded a prospective tenant of Shs12 million in a fake house rental deal. According to police, the complainant had been searching for accommodation through Jiji Uganda before being introduced to Lubega, who reportedly showed him a house in Kyanja and agreed on a monthly rent of Shs3 million.

Investigators say the victim was instructed to deposit Shs12 million, covering rent and a security deposit, into a bank account registered in Lubega's names. The payment was reportedly made on June 2 at Metroplex Mall. However, upon returning to the property, the complainant was informed by the caretaker that the house was not available for rent but was instead being sold. Efforts to reverse the transaction were unsuccessful because the money had already been withdrawn.

Police say the complainant later received information that Lubega had been spotted at a branch of Diamond Trust Bank in Naalya. By the time he arrived, the suspect had already been apprehended. Authorities allege that Lubega subsequently escaped while under the watch of a security guard, triggering a chase by members of the public who caught up with and assaulted him.

According to police, Lubega was later recovered and taken to Kiwatule Police Station. Officers reported that he appeared weak, although they observed no visible signs of torture at the time. He died shortly after arriving at the station. His body was transferred to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

The incident sparked public debate after police initially denied reports linking the suspect's death to events at the bank. However, following sustained scrutiny and discussions on social media, the Uganda Police Force acknowledged that an earlier communication contained an "unintended misrepresentation" resulting from a communication gap in preliminary information received from Kiwatule Police Station.

The case has been registered under CRB 064/2026, with investigations focusing on both the alleged rental fraud and the circumstances surrounding Lubega's death. In a statement, Diamond Trust Bank confirmed that its last interaction with the suspect occurred at its Naalya branch after concerns were raised regarding a transaction linked to him, after which the matter was handed over to police.

Police have condemned mob justice and urged members of the public to hand over suspects to law enforcement authorities instead of taking the law into their own hands. The incident comes amid growing national concern over mob violence following several recent high-profile cases that have attracted widespread public attention.
