The ban includes the summer of 2016 and winter of 2017. Real Madrid will be able to sign players in the summer of 2017.
 
Now official: Real Madrid and Atletico to serve transfer bans.

The ban, imposed by FIFA's Disciplinary Committee, is the result of an investigation into the registration of youth players by the clubs.

The ban does NOT affect the current transfer window, so Real Madrid and Atleti have just over 2 weeks to conduct business for the year.
 
Real Madrid will not be able to register players this next summer or next winter. They can do it now, however.
 
Marco Asensio will not be able to play for Real Madrid next year UNLESS he returns from his loan deal now.

Coentrao is on a loan deal and Real Madrid could use him next season if necessary.
