Tension between Real Madrid and Betis after Ceballos transfer

Relations between Real Madrid and Real Betis, who clash at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, are not at their best.

The hard stance both clubs took this summer before eventually agreeing a deal for Dani Ceballos have caused major tensions between them.

However, the straw that broke the camel's back came a few weeks later when Los Blancos swooped to sign David Pecellin, one of the biggest talents in Betis' youth system.

For the third successive year, they had taken one of the jewels in the crown of Los Verdiblancos after signing Pedro Ruiz in 2015 (who left at the request of the player's family) and Toni Segura last summer, who joined Juvenil A after several failed attempts from Real before they eventually took advantage of him nearing the end of his contract.

In both cases, Betis received some type of economic compensation and could secure more based on their development at Valdebebas, but that was not the case with Pecellin.

Madrid offered 15,000 euros for his services and Betis, rather irked by the bid, rejected it instantly but the player ended up leaving on a free with a change of family residence.

"He was taken by Real Madrid because the rules allow such a thing and that's what happened," said an angry Lorenzo Serra Ferrer at a recent press conference.

As the days have gone by, the initial discomfort has become even more tense and the Bernabeu stage will play host to the latest instalment of their rivalry on Wednesday.

Rummenigge did not consider Kroos a world class player

Stefan Reinartz, former teammate of Toni Kroos at Bayer Leverkusen, has revealed that the reason Bayern Munich allowed him to leave is because he was not thought of as being an elite talent.

Now retired from the game due to injuries, Reinartz played with Kroos for one season at the Bay Arena and the pair have remained good friends ever since.

He opened up on the circumstances surrounding Kroos' move to the Spanish capital in 2013, which his agent Volker Struth labelled as 'the robbery of the century', in an interview with Die Welt.

"Bayern didn't make enough of an effort to keep him. [Manchester] City and United also loved him and really wanted him but Madrid beat them to it by signing him for 25 million euros," said Reinartz.

"He is a friend of mine and I know the whole story. He was offered a new contract but he knew that [Mario] Gotze was also there and was roughly the same age as him and he wanted to be paid more.

"Bayern didn't want to pay him 10m euros and Rummenigge told Toni that he wasn't going to get that money because he wasn't a world class player.

"But Toni didn't leave over money, he needs the confidence of other people and Real recognised that. That's why he left."

The former Eintracht man also revealed just how huge a talent it was clear that Kroos was during his time at Leverkusen and within the German underage international sides.

"He was such a good player that he played without boots in order to give others a chance," he added. "He was brilliant, his passes were always so accurate.

"At 17, he was already playing with 18 year olds and at that age, a year in the difference is very noticeable but it wasn't with him."
