Popular and vocal Member of Parliament (MP) Anne Kilango Malecela received the honour of the Tanzania Woman of Courage Award 2009, bestowed by the United States Embassy in Tanzania. The annual award recognised Malecela's courage and leadership in struggles to improve the lives of Tanzanians when she challenged party leadership to confront the question of corruption, despite the threat this posed to her personal safety.

Dawasco likely to sue Minister Sophia Simba

The Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Corporation (Dawasco) has said it will take to court the Minister for Women, Gender and Children, Sophia Simba, for an alleged illegal water connection into her Kunduchi Bahari Beach residence in Dar es Salaam. This was said by Dawasco Public Relations Manager Badra Masoud yesterday, shortly after workers of the water utility firm had dug out pipes from erring customers as part of an on-going campaign.

The digging up of illegally connected water conduits was carried out in the city suburbs of Kawe, Mwenge Mlalakuwa, Kunduchi Beach and Boko, all being served by Kawe and Boko Dawasco offices. According to Masoud, water supply to the minister�s house was first disconnected some few weeks ago, after she had failed to settle outstanding water bills. However, the supply was restored contrary to regulations.

She said Dawasco intended to prosecute the minister ``for stealing water and tempering with water utility`s infrastructure.`` ``Early this month we (Dawasco) cut off water supplies to the minister`s house. We expected that the minister would turn up to settle the bill, but she instead illegally restored the service. As you can see now, the house is enjoying the service cost free,`` Masoud told journalists at the scene of incident, while showing a re-connected part of the water system. Early this year, Dawasco embarked on a special operation to penalize customers with outstanding bills by uprooting water distribution pipes.

SAME East MP Anne Kilango-Malecela has dismissed as "baseless" allegations of collusion with embezzlers directed at her by the Minister of State in the President's Office, Good Governance, Ms Sophia Simba. The CCM MP claimed today that the minister has embarked on "a deliberate campaign to tarnish her image before the public for reasons better known to herself''.

Ms Kilango said, however, that she would not like to enter into a war of words with the minister because it would neither be profitable nor productive to Tanzanians. The MP wondered why the minister, who is responsible for good governance, had not taken the matter to such state organs as the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB).

"My electorate and Tanzanians as a whole know me and they are able to identify between the husks and rice in this issue," reads part of her statement issued here yesterday. She was responding to allegations raised by Mrs Simba on Wednesday during a meeting convened by a special CCM team formed to identify causes of the existing rift between the MPs and their party.

"I'm not discouraged by such allegations which I'm pondering to establish its sources and reasons, especially at this time when the anti-graft war has gained momentum and is being supported by all patriotic Tanzanians. "If the Honourable Sophia Simba had watertight evidence on such serious allegations since 2005, why hasn't she reported the matter to the state organs?" Mrs Malecela wondered.
