Police Launch Investigation Into Fatal Attack on SC Villa Captain David Owori

Police have said detectives are actively pursuing leads following the killing of Uganda Cranes and SC Villa captain David Owori, who died after being attacked by suspected robbers outside his home in Makindye, Kampala.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson ASP Rachael Kawala, the 27 year old footballer was fatally assaulted after allegedly resisting an attempt by the suspects to steal his mobile phone and other personal belongings.

“The scene of the incident has been documented and processed to ensure that all relevant evidence is collected and preserved,” Kawala said, adding that detectives are following several leads to identify and arrest those responsible.​

Police said Owori sustained critical injuries during the attack on Tuesday night before he was rushed to a nearby medical facility and later transferred to a private hospital in Kampala, where he died on Wednesday.

Witnesses said the attackers allegedly assaulted the defender with paving stones before robbing him and fleeing the scene, leaving him unconscious.

The death of the SC Villa captain has sparked widespread grief across Uganda, with football stakeholders, politicians and supporters calling for justice and improved public security.

Owori, popularly known as “Colgate”, was one of Uganda’s most experienced defenders, captaining record Uganda Premier League champions SC Villa and earning appearances for the Uganda Cranes.

His death comes only weeks after rugby international Sydney Gongodyo also died following a violent attack in Kampala, further intensifying public concern over violent crime in the city.

The police investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.
