The Ugandan sporting fraternity is mourning the death of SC Villa captain David Owori, who has succumbed to injuries after a suspected attack by unknown assailants.

Earlier on Wednesday(Today), SC Villa released an official statement revealing that Owori had been attacked the previous night and was receiving urgent medical treatment in critical condition. The club said police had been notified and investigations into the incident were underway.

"David is currently hospitalized, in critical condition, and receiving urgent medical care. The Club and his family are doing everything possible to ensure that he overcomes this incident," the statement, signed by club president Omar Ahmed,

However, Reports including NBS Sport have since confirmed that the defender has died from the injuries he sustained in the attack.

Owori, who captained the Jogoos, was a key figure in SC Villa's squad and played an instrumental role in the club's recent successes, including leading the team to its historic 2023/24 Uganda Premier League title.

Police have said detectives are actively pursuing leads following the killing of Uganda Cranes and SC Villa captain David Owori, who died after being attacked by suspected robbers outside his home in Makindye, Kampala.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson ASP Rachael Kawala, the 27 year old footballer was fatally assaulted after allegedly resisting an attempt by the suspects to steal his mobile phone and other personal belongings.

“The scene of the incident has been documented and processed to ensure that all relevant evidence is collected and preserved,” Kawala said, adding that detectives are following several leads to identify and arrest those responsible.

Police said Owori sustained critical injuries during the attack on Tuesday night before he was rushed to a nearby medical facility and later transferred to a private hospital in Kampala, where he died on Wednesday.

Witnesses said the attackers allegedly assaulted the defender with paving stones before robbing him and fleeing the scene, leaving him unconscious.

The death of the SC Villa captain has sparked widespread grief across Uganda, with football stakeholders, politicians and supporters calling for justice and improved public security.

Owori, popularly known as “Colgate”, was one of Uganda’s most experienced defenders, captaining record Uganda Premier League champions SC Villa and earning appearances for the Uganda Cranes.

His death comes only weeks after rugby international Sydney Gongodyo also died following a violent attack in Kampala, further intensifying public concern over violent crime in the city.

The police investigation remains ongoing as detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Update: Police Arrest Two Suspects, Recover Stolen Phones in Investigation Into Villa Captain’s Murder

Police have arrested two suspects and recovered dozens of suspected stolen mobile phones as investigations continue into the murder of Owor David, a captain of Villa Football Club.

According to an update issued by the Uganda Police Force, the investigation established that Owor was robbed of an iPhone 14 Pro Max during the incident. Tracking the stolen phone reportedly led investigators to Munyaneza Bashir alias “Jemo,” a suspected dealer in stolen mobile phones, and his associate Magoba Samuel.
Police say four bags containing suspected stolen phones were recovered. The haul included 80 iPhones, 40 Samsung phones, eight Redmi phones, two Tecno phones, two Infinix phones, two Vivo phones and three button phones. Officers also recovered four phone motherboards, three iPads and SIM cards from MTN, Safaricom, Airtel and Lyca.

Other recovered items include ladies’ bags containing identification documents, phone covers and hard drives. Police say the investigation is ongoing to establish the ownership of the recovered items and the suspects’ possible links to the murder and other robberies.

The development comes as Owor was laid to rest in Tororo today, with family, friends, teammates and other mourners paying their final respects to the footballer. The latest arrests and recovery of exhibits could provide investigators with important leads as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding his death.
