Police in Kawempe Division have arrested a private security company driver after recovering ammunition and other suspected government stores from his possession.

The suspect, identified as Prosper Turinawe, 36, a resident of Kyebando Central, was arrested on June 21 following intelligence reports that he had allegedly been seen carrying a pistol along Mawanda Road in Kampala.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, officers from Wandegeya Police Station mounted an operation after receiving the tip-off and established that the suspect had been staying at a lodge in the area. Although Turinawe initially evaded arrest, police later tracked him down and intercepted him at about 6:00am.

Police said the suspect was found in possession of 13 rounds of ammunition at the time of his arrest. A subsequent search conducted at his residence in Kyebando Central led to the recovery of approximately 40 spent cartridges of different calibres, black military-style boots, uniforms belonging to a private security company, and other uniforms from various organisations.

"The recovered items were taken as exhibits to aid ongoing investigations," ASP Owoyesigyire said.

Police have since charged Turinawe with possession of government stores and detained him as investigations continue. Preliminary findings suggest that the premises occupied by the suspect may have been used as a storage point for the recovered items.

Investigators are now working to establish the source of the ammunition and other exhibits. Police are also trying to trace a firearm believed to be connected to the case but which had not yet been recovered by the time of the arrest.

ASP Owoyesigyire said the suspect will be produced in court once investigations are completed.

The arrest has raised concerns among security agencies about the circulation of illegal ammunition and suspected government stores within Kampala. Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as investigations into the matter continue.
