The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has defended its decision to invest Sh180 billion in the Marriott Hotel project, arguing that the investment should be viewed as part of the fund's broader portfolio strategy rather than in isolation.

Speaking on the matter, NSSF Managing Director Patrick Ayota said the fund's investment approach is based on diversification, a strategy aimed at spreading risk across multiple asset classes to ensure stable returns for members over the long term.

Ayota noted that NSSF does not concentrate its resources in a single sector because different investments perform differently depending on market conditions. While some ventures may deliver strong returns in a particular period, others may take longer to generate value.

“The performance of one investment should not be used to judge the entire portfolio,” Ayota said, emphasizing that NSSF's overall success is measured by the collective returns generated from all its investments.

The Marriott Hotel investment forms part of NSSF's real estate portfolio, which includes large-scale developments intended to generate long-term income and capital growth. According to the fund, investing in hospitality and commercial real estate is consistent with its objective of safeguarding and growing contributors' savings.

The investment has attracted public attention due to its size and the challenges faced by the hospitality industry in recent years. Critics have questioned whether such a significant allocation of funds represents the best use of contributors' money.

However, Ayota maintained that diversification remains critical to protecting members' savings and ensuring the fund can withstand fluctuations in individual sectors. He argued that focusing exclusively on one project ignores the broader picture of NSSF's investment performance.

Financial analysts generally support diversified investment strategies, noting that pension funds often invest across different sectors, including real estate, equities, government securities, and fixed-income assets, to balance risk and maximize long-term returns.

As scrutiny over the Marriott Hotel investment continues, stakeholders are expected to closely monitor its performance and contribution to NSSF's overall portfolio. The fund, meanwhile, insists that its investment decisions are guided by long-term value creation and the need to deliver sustainable returns for millions of savers.
