Before the SULTAN there were PORTUGUESE Invasion whom defeated local rulers and took control of almost all the coast of EA. F.Y.I They first concured OMAN... But the Omani's re-group and they finally succeded in evicting the Portuguese and local EA rulers seek help from Omani's that was towards the end of 17th Century.
But, the Freedom was shortlived as the Omanis annexed ZNZ and many coastal towns to their empire that was ruled from MUSCAT. Im 18th Century, ZNZ and Pemba were subjet to the sultans of Muscat and Oman... Then Sultan Sayyid Said moved to ZNZ.
The rule of SULTAN along the coasts was more of Commercial rather than Administrative- Territorial Empire - mostly SLAVE TRADE from INTERIOR.
18th Century was an ERA where EUROPEANS were looking for colonies; so Upon Sayyid Said Death his successors did not have a legal claim to the lands they controlled Commercially & no power to keep away the Germans and British from annexing them -- THE PATRITION OF AFRICA BERLIN CONFERENCE of 1884.
The Abolition of Slave Trade also play part in weakening the SULTAN and bit by bit he lost more land to the EURO colonizers. Then, The British & Germans comes into some agreements with the sultan to sell his possession on the mainland. So the Germans who were the first to colonize Tanganyika agreed with the British to exchange ZNZ with Heligoland and though the Sultan was still ruling, it was defacto British Colony. So ZNZ was ruled by 2 colonial masters Zanzibar of that time include islands of ZNZ, Pemba, Latham and coastal strip of Kenya.
But in 1963 Coastal Strip of Kenya and Mombasa was handed to the new Independent GVT of KENYA.
