The Government has given the contractor undertaking the Masaka–Kyotera–Mutukula Road project 90 days to commence tarmacking works after expressing concern over the slow pace of construction on the strategic regional corridor.
The directive was issued by the Minister of State for Works and Transport (Transport), Hon. Fred Byamukama, during an inspection of the project on Saturday. The minister, accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Works and Transport, said the current rate of progress is unacceptable for a project of such national and regional importance.
According to Hon. Byamukama, only about 30 percent of the construction works have been completed despite the project having just two years remaining before the contract expires.
The Masaka–Kyotera–Mutukula Road is one of Uganda's key transport corridors, linking the country to the United Republic of Tanzania through the Mutukula border. The road is expected to boost regional trade, tourism, cargo transportation, and cross-border movement under the East African Community integration framework.
During the inspection, the minister warned the contractor to accelerate the works, issuing a 90-day ultimatum to begin tarmacking the road.
"We have already chased people, and we're chasing more. I pray we don't chase you," Hon. Byamukama warned the contractor, signaling government's growing frustration over the delays."
The minister also directed the contractor to immediately intensify dust suppression by regularly watering the entire road corridor. He said excessive dust has become a major safety concern, contributing to road crashes and disrupting communities living along the route.
He further raised concerns over the lack of speed humps on some sections of the road, noting that the absence of traffic calming measures has increased the risk of accidents.
Government has committed UGX 629 billion towards the construction of the road under the 2024–2028 implementation programme. Officials said the investment is intended to improve regional connectivity, lower transport costs, and facilitate faster movement of people and goods between Uganda and Tanzania.
Hon. Byamukama assured the public that the Ministry of Works and Transport will maintain close supervision of the project to ensure the contractor improves performance, adheres to the required quality standards, and delivers the road within the agreed timeframe.
