TFF: Samatta halali ya Simba Send to a friend Thursday, 21 April 2011 09:24

*Wanasa kifaa cha Atraco, Yanga

Clara Alphonce

Nigeria defender Taye Taiwo scored with a late penalty kick on Sunday as defending champion Marseille rallied to beat Montpellier 2-1 and close the gap on French leader Lille to one point.
Olivier Giroud put hosts Montpellier ahead in the 64th minute when he finished off a flowing move by curling the ball into the bottom corner for his 10th league goal of the season.
Lille has picked up only one point from its last two games, opening up the title race with seven games remaining.
"I'm especially pleased because it wasn't an easy match," Marseille coach Didier Deschamps said. "We won it with our hearts. It was tough because Montpellier defended well. We're getting closer to Lille."

Lille is six points clear of third-place Lyon, which lost 1-0 at Paris Saint-Germain in Sunday's late match. PSG moved above Rennes and into fourth place, seven points behind Lille.
"It's true that we've missed a good chance to get back in the (title) race," Lyon coach Claude Puel said. "We came here with a lot of ambition."
Marseille striker Andre-Pierre Gignac leveled five minutes after Giroud's goal, running onto a superbly struck 50-yard pass from midfielder Benoit Cheyrou and clipping the ball over goalkeeper Geoffrey Jourdren without breaking stride for his second goal in two games and seventh in the league this season.
"We reacted well after conceding the first goal. Gignac scored and we benefited from a penalty at the end," Marseille defender Charles Kabore said. "We bounced back and got three very important points."
Gignac, who has lost his place in the France squad since the team's disappointing World Cup campaign, almost added another goal with a powerful shot that swerved just wide of the top corner.
After both teams had a player sent off, Taiwo scored in the 82nd when he coolly sent Jourdren the wrong way.
Referee Stephane Lannoy awarded Marseille the penalty after Abdelhamid El Kaoutari tugged back Loic Remy as he was about to shoot. Lannoy then sent both players off. Remy was dismissed even though Marseille was awarded the decision.
At Parc des Princes, defender Zoumana Camara scored in the 76th minute for PSG, which still has a slim title shot but could more realistically overtake Lyon in the race for a Champions League place.
PSG winger Ludovic Giuly made an immediate impact shortly after coming on for striker Mevlut Erding, who was again jeered by home fans.

Brazilian midfielder Nene's free kick was punched away by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, but the ball fell for Giuly to react quickly by pulling it back just enough for Camara to slide and divert it in with his knee.
PSG had the better of the chances in the first half, with Nene volleying wide from close range and striker Guillaume Hoarau seeing his shot cleared off the line by Lyon's Jeremy Toulalan.
Puel again left Brazilian defender Cris on the bench, preferring to keep Toulalan in central defense, even though Toulalan is normally a midfielder.
Lyon's first best chance came in the 50th when striker Bafetimbi Gomis latched onto Maxime Gonalon's pass in the penalty area and scooped the ball onto the crossbar.
Lyon playmaker Yoann Gourcuff had another poor match, and he was replaced at halftime by Ederson.
Last-place Arles-Avignon was relegated after losing 1-0 at home to Valenciennes, with Gregory Pujol scoring his 14th goal of the season. Arles has won just one of its 31 matches.
Marseille defends its League Cup trophy against Montpellier next weekend at Stade de France.

TFF: Samatta mali ya Simba

na Dina Ismail

amka2.gif

Ronaldo's late goal gives Real Madrid win over Barcelona in Copa del Rey

Real Madrid claimed their first trophy under José Mourinho when Cristiano Ronaldo's dramatic extra-time winner secured a 1-0 victory over Barcelona in the final of the Copa del Rey tonight.
With penalties looming in a tense and occasionally brutal clash at Valencia's Mestalla stadium, the Portuguese forward leaped to crash home a 103rd-minute header from Angel Di María's superb deep centre. Di María was later sent off after receiving his second yellow card just before the end of extra time.
Real's first domestic cup since 1993 came in Mourinho's debut season since joining from Internazionale, denying Pep Guardiola's Barça, who lead La Liga by eight points, the chance of a second treble in three seasons. The Spanish giants are also due to meet in the two-legged Champions League semi-final.
"It's a very important title; we're going to enjoy it," Ronaldo said. "Mourinho has done a good job. He's helped us a lot. Barça played very well but, as you know, the team who scores wins."
In a festive atmosphere in the Mediterranean port city, one half of the 55,000-capacity stadium was decked out in the claret and blue of Barça and draped in Catalan flags, while the other was a sea of white flecked with the yellow and gold of Spain.
Barça had six players from Spain's World Cup-winning squad in their starting 11 and Real four but any memories of shared glory in South Africa seemed far from their minds in an attritional first half-hour. Real successfully closed down Barça's creative midfielders and pacy forwards and had much the better of the first half before Pepe crashed a header off the post in the 44th minute with the goalkeeper José Manuel Pinto well beaten.
Barça had failed to muster a shot on target but the second period was a different story and they dominated possession, Andrés Iniesta and Pedro forcing fine saves from Iker Casillas.
However, even Lionel Messi was unable to break the deadlock and Ronaldo almost put Real ahead when he sped on to Xabi Alonso's pass in the eighth minute of extra time but his arrowed drive whistled wide. He made no mistake five minutes later and his powerful header sent the white half of the stadium into raptures and had them singing Mourinho's name long after the Barça fans had trooped dejectedly into the night.

Arsène Wenger refuses to concede Arsenal's title challenge is over

• Draw with Spurs fails to persuade manager the cause is lost
• Manchester United six points clear with five games left

Arsène Wenger refused to concede that Arsenal's title hopes have ended, despite his team trailing the leaders Manchester United by six points with only five matches to play. The manager was in surprisingly upbeat mood following the draw at Tottenham Hotspur, a game that Arsenal had led 3-1, and he said the race remained "completely open".
Wenger had said before Sunday's home fixture against Liverpool that Arsenal needed to beat them and Tottenham to remain in contention. They conceded a last-gasp equaliser from the penalty spot to draw 1-1 with Liverpool.
Wenger has seen enough from his team, who still have to play United at home on Sunday week, to believe that they could yet finish on top to claim their first silverware since 2005. United dropped points in the 0-0 at Newcastle United on Tuesday.
"It is completely open," he said. "We have to get ready for the next game [away at Bolton Wanderers] and fight as we have done. This team has a remarkable attitude, even if at the moment we are not rewarded with the number of points. We are remarkably consistent. We are on a 16-match unbeaten league run but we have had too many draws. That is what we have to turn around. But it is open. Chelsea are back in the race and they play Man United and Spurs. It is down to us to keep our faith and keep battling. We will not always draw when we score three goals."
Wenger's regrets took in the loss of the two-goal lead, a disallowed goal from Robin van Persie and the fatigue that his team showed late in the game. Tottenham had not played since the previous Wednesday. "It is a massive disadvantage to play two games of such stature in a matter of days," he said. "The Liverpool game had a bearing. Physically we dropped in the second half, which explained why they equalised and why there was room to score goal numbers four and five.
"We controlled the first half and to be 3-2 did not reflect the first half. Theydidn't create a lot and I also feel that we scored a goal that was not offside. But it is not all negative. What happened to us on Sunday... to recover and come back... I believe that this team has outstanding personality. Not many teams would have survived what has happened to us recently."
It was a breathless occasion and Harry Redknapp sought simply to savour it. "I don't know where this leaves us for fourth place and I don't care," the Tottenham manager said. "If we make it, we make it ... if we don't, we try again next year.
Redknapp said that Gareth Bale, who was forced off with a knee injury after a challenge from Wojciech Szczesny, "shouldn't be too bad. He got a knock but he'll get plenty of them over the next few years," he said. "He should be OK."

Arsène Wenger refuses to concede Arsenal's title challenge is over

Seldom can disappointment have been so spectacular. Arsenal will rue the 3-1 lead torn from them but the night deserves to be prized for the confirmation of the talent in their ranks and those of Tottenham Hotspur. Arsène Wenger had a weary tone to his voice afterwards even as he was claiming that the outcome of the Premier League is "completely open".
The prospects are poor for him. Arsenal are in third place behind Chelsea on goal difference, with Manchester United six points ahead of both. From another perspective it can be argued that Wenger's squad have the ability to thrive, even if yet more adjustments are necessary. He and everyone else appreciates where the problem lies.
Once again the defence were not steadfast and references to the unavailability of Thomas Vermaelen, who has missed virtually all of this campaign, also speak of the lack of credible alternatives. Yet it took Rafael van der Vaart at his very best to expose the brittleness of Arsenal.
He has usually been played behind a single striker for Tottenham and can look subdued. In this match the Dutchman was permitted more scope since the manager, Harry Redknapp, had two outright strikers in Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko. That approach may not continue since it leaves the midfield outnumbered but this was an evening for expansiveness.
As early as the fifth minute Cesc Fábregas released Theo Walcott to shoot low past Heurelho Gomes. Tottenham were not to be discouraged and it was simple sense for Redknapp to seek insistent attacking.
The equaliser came in the seventh minute. Vedran Corluka passed towards Van der Vaart and, as Johan Djourou lost his footing, the Dutchman finished strongly. Tottenham were again left in the visitors' wake when Abou Diaby set up Samir Nasri for a shot from 20 yards that went through the legs of Michael Dawson on its way to the net after 12 minutes.
This was a match that seethed with adventure. Gomes was able to reach a header from Robin van Persie after a Walcott cross but when the goalkeeper pushed the ball back Van Persie converted it with force in the 40th minute.
Tom Huddlestone then struck from 20 yards to cut Tottenham's deficit to 3-2 before half-time.
There was an abundance of interest, some of it troubling. Gareth Bale felt the impact of the Arsenal goalkeeper as Wojciech Szczesny collided with the Welshman. Bale made an effort to persevere but was clearly in trouble and was replaced at half-time by Aaron Lennon. Tottenham, however, do not believe the injury to be serious.
Bale's departure may have been encouraging for Arsenal, who have the best away form in the Premier League. Despite their spirit their lead was still slim and to Wenger's exasperation a drive by Van Persie that would have put the side 4-2 ahead was ruled out for offside. The manager was convinced the assistant referee was mistaken. The game became increasingly tough for the visitors, even if Szczesny was equal to the moment when he excelled in reaching and turning away a strong shot from Van der Vaart.
Tottenham were assured by then, pinning down Arsenal more than they had done earlier.
They equalised with a penalty in the 70th minute. Szczesny, who has just turned 21, looked gauche when he miscalculated while rushing out to bring down Lennon, who was tearing down Tottenham's left flank. Van der Vaart converted the penalty on an evening that could not bear to pause for breath.
In principle there is volatility still in this contest for the Premier League title. Manchester United must go to the Emirates and Sir Alex Ferguson's side also take on Chelsea in what could be the pivotal game at Old Trafford. There is intrigue in all of that, yet it is hard to picture Arsenal as the beneficiaries.
When the thrill of this spectacle at White Hart Lane has faded, the space will be filled by the realisation that Arsenal blew a 3-1 lead.
It ought to be appreciated that in advance of this fixture Tottenham had scored a mere 22 Premier League goals on this ground. If they were at times irrepressible, it was because Arsenal permitted them to be so.
Wenger is under an obligation to believe that all may yet go his way but the rest of football will think about what lies ahead in the longer term for Arsenal. If they are to win trophies again, they will have to discover a way of being more forceful.

TFF yatakiwa kuwa makini Send to a friend Thursday, 21 April 2011 09:02

Kalunde Jamal

Rafael van der Vaart shows Spurs' strikers the way to goal

Dutch midfielder finds the scoring touch which has deserted Tottenham Hotspur's forwards

And so the curiosity continues. On a night of high-octane drama, when Tottenham Hotspur diced with death and glory, they had every reason to be grateful to Rafael van der Vaart, who had White Hart Lane rocking to a raucous beat. His two goals helped to secure a point, the merit of which remains to be seen as the club fight for a fourth-placed finish, but they were sorely needed as Harry Redknapp's strikers continued to misfire.
It is a wonder that Tottenham have remained in contention for another dose of Champions League football as their recognised front men have contributed 13 Premier League goals. The record reads: Roman Pavlyuchenko seven; Peter Crouch four; Jermain Defoe two and Robbie Keane, in the first half of the season, zero.
But, if Redknapp already has his eye on upgrades in the summer, he can at least revel in the contributions from elsewhere. Gareth Bale, subdued here and forced out of the action, has weighed in heavily yet it was Van der Vaart who took centre stage. The Dutchman has sometimes resembled a luxury player and he has faced questions over his form and fitness in the second half of the season, after he began it so explosively following his deadline day move from Real Madrid. Yet he embraced the occasion with gusto; the high stakes and sheer passion of the 90 minutes seeing him conjure his best.
He started on the right flank, as Redknapp accommodated Crouch and Pavlyuchenko in an attempt to exploit perceived aerial weaknesses in the Arsenal defence. There was plenty of hoofing it up to the big man and, as ever, Crouch won plenty of headers and made his presence felt, as Bacary Sagna would attest, after Crouch's elbow split his lip.
It was that kind of rough and tumble derby. Tottenham must hope that Bale is not seriously injured after he was cleaned out by the Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. The Welshman, who did not reappear in the second half, limped from the stadium afterwards. Some of the tackling was frenzied.
Van der Vaart is nobody's idea of an orthodox right midfielder and he did not play like one, constantly drifting inside to seek out the action. He has an addiction to being at the heart of things, which is not always good for the team's balance. Vedran Corluka had a busy first half at right-back, as did Younes Kaboul in the second.
Redknapp has had to make concessions with Van der Vaart but it can seem worthwhile when he shows his mercurial talent, as he did throughout this gloriously helter-skelter contest. His touch from Corluka's pass in the sixth minute was bettered only by the finish, a curling, eye-of-the-needle effort that located the only spot that Szczesny did not have covered.
The goalkeeper would be beaten by an even better strike in the first half, from Tom Huddlestone, and Van der Vaart went on to work him in the second period before he nervelessly converted the equaliser from the penalty spot. In and around everything were sumptuous backheels and feints. When he is on his game like this, he offers the impression that he is still a kid in the playground.
Redknapp's thoughts are never too far from the next transfer window and he can be expected to attack the summer market with the same zeal that he showed in January. Some of the targets will be the same, including Villarreal's Giuseppe Rossi, which would seem to represent bad news for Defoe, who is the lively little finisher in Redknapp's pack at present.
Defoe has endured a frustrating season, with a serious injury on England duty followed by travails to dislodge Van der Vaart and to find the net. He knows that Redknapp has been good to him during his career but that has not stopped him becoming increasingly unhappy with his manager. It feels inevitable that he will be touted for a summer move. Tottenham also hope West Ham United can avoid relegation and so be in a position to make Keane's loan move permanent.
Crouch and Pavlyuchenko have not enjoyed much playing time together and they did not appear to be on the same wavelength. At times they resembled two centre-forwards playing as individuals. Pavlyuchenko could not anticipate Crouch's knock-downs and he was guilty of misplacing passes to his partner. He allowed his frustration to show, as did the crowd.
Crouch did everything to link the play and his best effort on goal was a looping header in the 78th minute that Szczesny did well to tip over. Tottenham's threat, though, came from deeper. It feels slightly unorthodox. How long can Tottenham sustain their challenge without goals from their strikers?

Kaseja afumba mdomo Send to a friend Thursday, 21 April 2011 09:00

Jackson Odoyo
