Fraud office looks at scamming of Sven-Goran Eriksson

Sven-Goran Eriksson was conned into meeting North Korea's leadership

The Serious Fraud Office is examining a con that took in Sven-Goran Eriksson and the North Korean government, BBC Panorama has learned.
Investigators are also looking at how the same conman stole a football club and broke a bank.
Convicted fraudster Russell King persuaded the former England manager to join Notts County FC as director of football and to visit North Korea.
Mr King denies any fraud and said he was just a consultant on the deals.
Mr Eriksson was appointed at Notts County in 2009 following a takeover that promised to bring millions of pounds of Middle Eastern investment.
"For me as a football man it was fantastic, building a club from the bottom of League Two and having the funding to do it, to be a Premier League club. It's like a dream, so I signed. Big mistake," he said of the deal.
Milk bill The promised money never arrived and the club was left £7m in debt. Mr Eriksson says there were early signs that all was not as it seemed.
"I started to have doubts when they came and told me the milk bill has not been paid," he said.

Mr King claimed his Swiss-based mining company had assets worth almost $2 trillion because it had the rights to North Korea's gold, coal and iron ore.
He told Mr Eriksson the Notts County cash would come from that mining deal. He then persuaded him to join a delegation visiting Pyongyang.
"I was in the palace and they were handing over to the North Korean government so-called shares," Mr Eriksson told Panorama.
"I asked them how much that was and what they told me was not millions, it was billions of dollars. They used my name. Of course they did. At the end it became a big, big mistake."
'Con-man' Russell King's business deals had credibility because they appeared to have the backing of First London plc, an investment bank with advisers including Conservative MP Tim Yeo and Air Marshal Sir John Walker, a former British spymaster.
The bank sent Sir John, a former head of defence intelligence, to check out Mr King and the Korean deal, but he was also taken in.
Sir John said of the deal: "What do I think of Russell King? Not a lot. He was good at chat, but that was his business. He was a con man. I was taken the same way Sven was taken. They just wanted names."
Mr King also managed to get control of almost half of First London plc without paying a penny for the shares, after he convinced its bankers he was managing billions of dollars for the Bahraini royal family.

But Fawaz Al Khalifa, President of the Bahraini Information Affairs Authority, says that Mr King was lying about his royal connections: "He might have met members of the family here or there, but we have no financial connection to him or his company."
First London PLC went into administration last year with debts of £8.7m and the Financial Services Authority (FSA) has been examining the deal that gave King control of 49% of its shares. The FSA has now passed its finding to the Serious Fraud Office (SFO).
"In this case the acquisition of control occurred without the FSA having been given the prior notice which the law requires it to be given," said an FSA spokesman.
First London plc's parent company, First London Group plc, is still in business. In a statement, its lawyers said the failure to notify the FSA about the change in ownership was a mistake that had been rectified:
"This was simply an error and not done for any ulterior or questionable motive. As far as our client is aware the FSA were satisfied that the information provided was in compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.
"Our client is unaware of any investigation by the FSA or SFO."
Lord Voldemort Mr King, who was jailed for insurance fraud in 1991, denies any involvement in the running of Notts County or First London plc.
But Panorama has obtained dozens of emails and numerous testimonies that show he was secretly pulling the strings at Notts County.

Convicted fraudster Russell King referred to himself as the elusive Lord Voldemort
King even referred to himself as Lord Voldemort, the character from the Harry Potter books who can never be named.
The club had been owned by a supporters' trust, but Mr King persuaded the fans to sell it for just £1 after they met one of his supposedly wealthy benefactors in Bahrain.
Abid Hyat Khan was introduced as a Middle Eastern prince, but Panorama has discovered he is actually on the run from British police.
He absconded from the UK in 2008, when he was due to stand trial for allegedly stealing almost £1m. Khan denies posing as a prince.

Scottish Premier League to propose British League Cup

Hibernian chairman Rod Petrie and Aberdeen chairman Stewart Milne arrived at Hampden on Monday for discussions on league reconstruction The Scottish Premier League will explore the creation of a British League Cup if plans for a major shake-up of the game are ratified.
BBC Scotland has gained access to the SPL's 100-page strategic plan, which includes plans for a 10-team SPL.
It shows a desire to merge with the Scottish Football League in the summer - and a cross-border competition.
Clubs met at Hampden on Monday as they seek a consensus on a number of issues including league reconstruction.
A new league set-up has been driving the change among the SPL's members, but there are a number of other objectives that clubs are being asked to back in a bid to turn around the fortunes of the Scottish game.
The document makes specific reference to unification of the SPL and SFL with an attractive reason being to "enable the SPL to explore the possibility of cross-border matches (potentially British Cup matches) via the Scottish League Cup".
The idea of a British club tournament has been proposed in recent years, with a 2001 proposal backed by Aberdeen chairman Stewart Milne, which was ultimately rejected by the Football League in England.
In 1902, a British League Cup competition raised money for the Ibrox Stadium disaster and included the winners and runners-up of the Scottish and English Football Leagues.
Several other official and unofficial cross-border competitions have also taken place over the decades, including the Empire Exhibition Trophy in 1938, the Coronation Cup in 1957, the Texaco Cup and the Anglo-Scottish Cup.
Some other proposals included in the SPL's strategic plan include:

  • The national team's Fifa ranking to improve from 66th to 15th within five years
  • The SPL's coefficient ranking to improve from 16th to 10th in five years
  • Broadcasting revenues to increase by 50% in five years
  • The Scottish Football Association to make payments to clubs when players are on international duty
A draft of the document was discussed at a meeting on 7 January but has since been re-drafted after prolonged deliberations over a number of months.
BBC Scotland has learned that a vote on the proposals should finally take place in mid-May.

Arsenal supporters keen for Kroenke to 'win over fans'

Kroenke watched Sunday's draw against Liverpool The Arsenal Independent Supporters' Association (Aisa) has issued a statement to the club's majority shareholder Stan Kroenke.
The American, who increased his stake to nearly 63% last week, has been urged by the group to "take advantage of his opportunity to win over fans".
Aisa wants Kroenke to promise that no debt arising from the purchase of shares will be transferred to the club.
The statement also calls on the Gunners to freeze ticket prices.
On 11 April, Kroenke became the majority shareholder when Kroenke Sports Enterprises (KSE) agreed a deal to buy the stakes of the late Danny Fiszman (16.1%) and Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith (15.9%) for a fee of around £234m.
This took Kroenke's holding up to 62.89% - and by passing 30%, under company law he is obliged to make a mandatory cash offer for the remaining capital at a price of £11,750 per share, which values the club at £731m.
However, one fans' group, the Arsenal Supporters' Trust, has already said its minority shareholders will not sell as they seek to retain a voice.
Red and White Holdings, the investment vehicle of Russian-based Uzbeki billionaire Alisher Usmanov, are also unwilling to do business over their 27% stake in the club.

BBC sports editor David Bond Read more from David Bond's blog
And Aisa wants Kroenke to prove his intentions are in line with their own, as well as continuing the Arsenal Fanshare initiative.
The Aisa release read: "The sale of large tranches of the club's shares over the last few years has created a good deal of uncertainty amongst supporters, and together with the constant media speculation has had an unsettling effect.
"The announcement on 11 April 2011 marks the start of a new era for Arsenal, and the beginning of the end of that uncertainty.
"It is important that the new era starts off on a positive note, and Arsenal fans are very aware of what has happened at other major football clubs in recent years when changes of ownership have taken place.
"We therefore believe it is crucial that no debt contracted by KSE, and/or by Mr Kroenke personally, be transferred to Arsenal Holdings plc or any subsidiary now or in the future, nor secured against Arsenal revenues.
"Aisa has been banging the drum, and will continue to do so, about the need for the club to recognise more fully supporter loyalty and recently presented 10 key proposals on ticket prices and supporter loyalty to the chief executive.
"We hope the new regime will embrace this document and look forward to dialogue on this crucial issue.
"We look forward to working with Stan Kroenke and KSE to maintain, develop and strengthen the voice of supporters within our great club, and we commit ourselves to act in co-operation to achieve the best possible outcomes for the club on and off the field."
Kroenke, who owns the Denver Nuggets basketball franchise, the Colorado Avalanche ice hockey team, the St Louis Rams American football team and Major League Soccer side Colorado Rapids, bought into the club in 2007 and since then has gradually increased his holding.

Alexander Hleb favours move to Arsenal over Birmingham

Hleb says Birmingham's style of play does not suit his game Belarus midfielder Alexander Hleb has ruled out a permanent switch to Birmingham City in the summer.
But the 29-year old, who is on loan from Barcelona, wants to stay in the Premier League and would favour a return to former club Arsenal.
He said: "I want to give my best for Birmingham but if I have chance to go back to Arsenal, of course I would.
"I am happy and enjoy my time here, everything is good but this is a little bit not my style of football."
The attacking midfielder made 109 starts in a three-year spell at Arsenal before joining Barcelona for £11.8m in July 2008.
"Of course, I love Arsenal," he explained. "It is always in my heart but now is too early to speak about a new club.
"Everything is possible but I am just saying if I get this chance, of course I'd come."
Hleb set up Birmingham's second goal in their 2-0 Premier League win against Sunderland at St Andrew's on Saturday.
But he has struggled with injury this season, scoring twice in 16 starts for the Blues - and feels he does not suit their style of play.
"I have enjoyed it here in a way because it is something new," Hleb continued.
"But here you need to just fight and run, not too much passing. This is a different experience and I prefer to play and to enjoy football."
Hleb is yet to play a league game for Barcelona and spoke of his frustration at not being included in the starting line-up for the Spanish champions.
"Barcelona is the biggest club in the world but it is difficult when you are not from Spain," he commented.
"It has happened with everybody - with [Thierry] Henry, everyone. [Coach] Josep Guardiola picks the Spanish players.
"I've not had a lot of chances to play there and I would prefer to stay in the Premier League."

Stuart Broad wants Andrew Strauss to stay as captain

Stuart Broad has outlined his future ambitions to captain England but backed incumbent Andrew Strauss to continue to lead the one-day team.
Former England skipper Michael Vaughan said Broad would be the ideal candidate to replace Strauss should he step down as 50-over captain.
"I would love to do it at some stage," Broad told BBC Sport.
"But my personal belief is that Straussy should keep going. I believe there is a lot more to come from him."
Broad added: "He has led the team fantastically well since he was appointed in 2009.
"He has a lot to offer as England captain in all formats of the game and he's certainly one of our best one-day batsmen, so hopefully he'll keep going."

Alastair Cook has also been tipped as a potential replacement.
Cook, England's most successful batsman in the 3-1 Ashes victory with 766 runs, has already experienced captaining England following last year's winter to tour to Bangladesh, presiding over a 2-0 Test series victory before a 3-0 one-day win.
And the Essex left-hander says he would be "ready" if Strauss opted to relinquish his one-day duties with an increasingly congested fixture calendar to negotiate.
"I like challenging myself and if the opportunity arises in the near future I would like to try it - but if selection goes the other way and they choose another captain if Straussy retires then so be it," Cook said last week.
And Broad said he is progressing well from a side strain which has kept him out for large sections of the winter, including three Ashes Tests as well as England's final two World Cup group fixtures and the quarter-final against Sri Lanka.
The 24-year-old will use Nottinghamshire's County Championship match against Yorkshire on 4 May to regain valuable match fitness, with the option to play two more four-day matches before the first Test against Sri Lanka at Cardiff on 26 May.
_52232285_kp.jpg
Pietersen is now playing county cricket for Surrey "I'm looking forward to get back to playing again, it's going to be an exciting summer," Broad told BBC Radio 5 live.
England team-mate Kevin Pietersen is also on track for the first five-day match of the summer - which will feature four Tests against newly crowned world champions India - after undergoing a hernia operation.
The former England captain was forced to miss the Indian Premier League as part of his recuperation process.
"I'm not raring to go right now, not all. I'm enjoying this break, it's amazing," said the 30-year-old.
"I've not had a break like this for seven years playing for England. It's something I've really enjoyed.
"But I'm rehabbing three, four, five times a week trying to get things right, just making sure I get myself right, get myself strong, get myself fit."
"I haven't picked up a cricket bat of late, I haven't even seen a cricket bat except on TV watching the IPL.
"I'll start playing probably in the middle of May and try and get ready to prove my fitness for the first Test match."

Gavin Henson handed one-week suspension by Toulon

_52222561_henson226.jpg
Henson played four games for Saracens this season

Gavin Henson has been suspended for one week by Toulon for breaching the French club's disciplinary code.
According to a statement issued by the Top 14 side, the Wales international did not "respect the code of good behaviour defined by the club".
No further reason was given as to why the 29-year-old centre, who joined the big-spending club on a short-term contract in February, was suspended.
Henson scored a try on his Toulon debut against Stade Francais two weeks ago.
He will miss Toulon's forthcoming match against Perpignan this Saturday.
The flamboyant star had been hoping for an international recall having not played for Wales for over two years following a self-imposed hiatus from rugby.
Earlier this month, Wales assistant coach Rob Howley said it was "very likely" Henson - who can play full-back, centre or fly-half - would feature for his country in June ahead of the start of the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand in September.
Henson joined a growing exodus of French-based British players by signing for big-spending Toulon from Premiership club Saracens, England World Cup-winning fly-half Jonny Wilkinson being one of his team-mates.
However, his international aspirations - and perhaps his latest disciplinary breech - could affect his chances of signing a longer-term contract at the Stade Mayol.
Toulon coach Philippe Saint-Andre is set to lose a number of big names for the World Cup and does not want to lose another player ahead of the new Top 14 season.
Henson has endured an eventful two years following a sabbatical from rugby, the breakdown of his high-profile marriage with singer Charlotte Church as well as a stint as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing.
He made his long-awaited return to the game with Saracens in December, but his appearances were limited by the emergence of exciting backs Owen Farrell and Brad Barritt, as well as a torn calf muscle.
After four appearances for Sarries, Henson was released from his contract and Toulon - bank-rolled by millionaire Mourad Boudjellal - swooped to take him to the French Riviera on a five-month deal.
He played 80 minutes at inside centre in the 38-10 victory over Stade Francais, crossing the tryline to complete an impressive home debut earlier this month.
Henson has won 31 caps for Wales and

Hendry edges Perry in final-frame decider

Seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry survived a tenacious Joe Perry fightback to win an epic battle 10-9.
Perry fought back from 6-3 down, pushing Hendry all the way to a thrilling deciding frame.
But Hendry, often at his best when his back is against the wall, capitalised on Perry's miss on the brown to win the decider by the narrowest of margins.
"I've got a big decision to make at the end of the season, I might even retire if I win this tournament," said Hendry.
The Scot led 6-3 after the opening session but that advantage was wiped out after Perry won the first three frames of the afternoon.
Hendry edged ahead with a 67 break, but Perry came back to 7-7 with a courageous 80. Hendry inched 8-7, then 9-8 in front, but Perry kept coming back at him.
At 53-1 up in the decider, the first of this year's World Championship, Hendry seemed home and dry but Perry wouldn't give in and came back to 53-34 - however, he missed a crucial brown and got no closer.
Hendry's reward is a second round match against either Mark Selby or Jimmy Robertson.
The former champion, who needed to win to have any chance of preserving his 23-year status as a top-16 player, said: "I didn't expect to get another chance but I'm very relieved. I just hung in there."
On the prospect of retiring, Hendry said: "I've got a big decision to make at the end of the season. Because I won't play in the PTC events my ranking will always suffer. I might even retire if I win this tournament."
Having played at the Crucible every year since 1986, Hendry added: "I love it out there. I'm as familiar there as I am in my own front room. It's the best place in the world to play snooker.
"But I got out of jail a bit today and that puts you in a good frame of mind. I'm just approaching one game at a time."
In the day's earlier game, China's Ding Junhui swept into the second round with a crushing 10-2 victory over Scotland's Jamie Burnett.

The world number four held a commanding 8-1 lead overnight and completed the job with a break of 71 in the morning session.
"It feels all right, I'm playing quite well," said the 24-year-old, who has never gone past the second round before. "I'm just concentrating on my game and trying to play my best."
The Masters champion crashed out in the first round of the World Championship in 2007 and has been knocked out in the second round in the three following years.
"Everybody tries hard here so the second round will be quite a difficult match to get through," added Ding, who will now face Peter Ebdon or Stuart Bingham.

He was unbeaten in two starts as a juvenile for Dermot Weld and is now trained by Mahmood Al Zarooni.
Godolphin still have Casamento and Saamidd engaged in the 2,000 Guineas and a decision regarding their participation will be made in the middle of next week.

Highlights - Chinese Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton said his victory in Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix was one of the best of his career.
The Englishman used his McLaren team's three-stop strategy brilliantly to chase down Sebastian Vettel and take the lead with four laps to go.
"I never really knew right to the end I could do it," he said. "It is one of the best grand prix wins I can remember.

"I could not believe I was catching Vettel. He was putting up a great fight and it was great to get by him."
Hamilton closed to within 21 points of Vettel to be second in the drivers' championship and stop the German kicking off the season with a hat-trick of successes.
Both he and team-mate Jenson Button passed pole-sitter Vettel at the start. Red Bull elected to put their driver on a two-stop strategy in a bid to make up ground, but Hamilton found himself with much fresher rubber than Vettel and the two Ferraris in the latter stages, enabling him to overtake a series of drivers.
Reflecting with a degree of emotion on his 15th career success, Hamilton said: "This is one of the best GP wins I can remember. I got a great start and that gives you momentum.
"I knew the Red Bull had the real pace but the way it panned out with strategy and pit stops, I couldn't have asked for more.
"When you start you have to believe opportunities will come. I always think when I come into a race 'I can win this' ".

Start was key to victory - Hamilton

Hamilton performed his critical manoeuvre up the inside of a gentle left-hander, turn seven - not noted as an obvious spot for overtaking.
He said: "Sebastian is a great world champion. He is very good at defending, he has a great car, good traction and slightly better down-force. I had to take him at a place where he wouldn't expect it.
"You put so much into a season with preparations over winter. It feels like a long time since I won a GP (Belgium, August 2010). It feels like an eternity.
"My new option tyres seemed to last longer and the pit stops were fantastic. The car felt great and I was trying to nurse my tyres while picking up pace.
"The emotion comes from the desire to win and to be better and to compete against tough rivals. When you haven't won it feels like an eternity.
"The car has been great and we are having to push with everything we have to close the gap. We were smarter on strategy and on making it work."

I was looking down and when I looked back up I could see I was in the wrong place
Jenson Button explains the error on his first pit-stop
The result was a satisfactory one for McLaren as a whole, with Button's fourth place contributing 12 points to a team haul of 37, four more than Red Bull accrued.
That was despite a bizarre incident in which Button lost valuable time during his first pit stop when he momentarily parked his car between the Red Bull crew before being waved on to his correct position.
Button said of the incident: "I was looking down and when I looked back up I could see I was in the wrong place."
He went on: "Massive congrats to Lewis. It was one of those races with lots of overtaking, lots of action. I wasn't quick enough and really struggled to look after the tyres for some reason.
"It's enjoyable but also you're a sitting duck when people have new tyres. You try to fight back but you don't have the traction, it's tricky."
McLaren's chief operating officer Martin Whitmarsh added: "It's been a challenging weekend, so much emotion; there is so much action in the race that if you get it only slightly wrong you're toast.
"The first win of the year has been very emotional. You always worry about not winning a race in a season."
His team trail Red Bull by 20 points in the constructors' championship, with Ferrari 35 points shy of McLaren in third.

Conway was fortunate to survive after his horror crash last season Mike Conway claimed an emotional maiden IndyCar victory by winning Sunday's Grand Prix of Long Beach less than a year after suffering a horrific crash.
The 27-year-old Englishman broke his leg and back on the final lap of the Indianapolis 500 in May 2010.
But in his third race since returning from that accident, he triumphed for the first time in 26 starts.
Ryan Briscoe was more than six seconds back in second place, with reigning champion Dario Franchitti third.
Conway passed Briscoe with 14 laps remaining in the 85-lap race and stormed home to rise 19 places to fifth in the standings.
"The car was just on fire, really, at the end," Conway told the LA Times. "Before I knew it, I was in the lead."
Referring to the famed 11-turn, 1.97-mile Long Beach seaside circuit, Australian driver Briscoe commented: "Kudos to Conway; it's a pretty special place for him to get his first win.
"Conway was lightning fast, I really had nothing for him."
It was a superb result for a driver who was involved in one of the most frightening crashes in Indianapolis 500 history.
Competing for the Dreyer & Reinbold in his second IndyCar season, Conway collided with Ryan Hunter-Reay - a current team-mate at Andretti Autosport.
His car flew through the air before smashing into a catch fence and almost disintegrating, leaving him with multiple fractures to his lower left leg and a compression fracture in his back.
"I just wasn't sure when I'd get back," said Conway. "Things like that can definitely stop your career.
"But I was just determined not to let it, determined to get back, back to fitness and back in a car."
Of the decision to hire Conway, Andretti stated: "I had no question in my mind. I personally felt he was going to be hungrier than ever. I never felt like it was taking a chance."
Conway went through a gruelling rehabilitation programme to be fit for the start of this campaign and finished 23rd in his first event back at St Petersburg before coming 22nd at Alabama.
He qualified in third for Sunday's race and stuck with the leaders until a poor pit stop saw him fall deep into the 27-car field.
But he fought back brilliantly to capture a superb victory.
"After the hiccup in the pits, you'd think the race was over for him," added Andretti. "But he just hung in there, made some beautiful passes and did what it takes."

Mutai finished in two hours, three minutes and two seconds Kenya's Geoffrey Mutai won the Boston Marathon men's race in an unofficial world-record time of two hours, three minutes and two seconds.
The previous world best of 2:03:59 was set by Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie in Berlin on 28 September 2008.
But Mutai's run does not qualify as an official world record because the Boston course is downhill and he benefited from a strong tailwind.
The 29-year-old beat fellow countryman Moses Mosop by just four seconds.
And Mutai smashed the course record, set in last year's race by Kenyan Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot, by almost three minutes.
"I knew I could run well but the record was not on my mind," Mutai said. "I was feeling OK. I was confident in myself after training so much.
"I tried to push myself. The wind was blowing on all sides all over the course. We were not facing the wind but it was coming from all around us."
Mutai and Mossop ran side-by-side in the latter stages of the race before Mutai pulled ahead as they moved towards the finish.
He is the 19th Kenyan winner of the race in the past 21 years.
There was also a sprint finish in the women's event, where Caroline Kilel, also representing Kenya, finished two seconds ahead of American Desiree Davila.
The results come just a day after Emmanuel Mutai and Mary Keitany completed a Kenyan double as they won the men's and women's races at the London Marathon.

Jack Wilshere is confident Manchester United will drop points and believes "100 per cent" Arsenal can capitalise to win the Premier League.
The Gunners are now six points off United after their controversial draw with Liverpool on Sunday, in which both sides were awarded - and scored - penalties in injury-time.
Arsene Wenger's side still have to play the Red Devils at the Emirates and Wilshere is as confident as ever his side can claim the title.

The England starlet, who scooped the PFA young player of the year award on Sunday, said: "We have six cup finals left.
"We feel we are still in it. I believe that 100 per cent. If we don't believe then what chance have we got? We know the manager believes.
"Maybe the fans are starting not to believe but they are great every week, they are behind us. We have to repay that. We are confident Man Utd will drop points.
"They lost at the weekend (in the FA Cup) and they have a big game in the Champions League coming up. Maybe that can put them off.
"They still have to come to the Emirates. If we beat them then maybe we can put them on a bad run."
But to keep their fading title hopes alive, Wenger's side must beat arch-rivals Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Wednesday.
Wilshere added: "Arsenal versus Tottenham is massive for the fans.
"It's the one they want to win all year. So we have to put the Liverpool game behind us.
"We have to go to Tottenham and not just do it for the fans but do it for ourselves and keep our title hopes alive.''
As regards the London Olympics next summer, Wilshere says it would be a "dream" to take part, despite the spectacle coming after the Euro 2012 finals, with the fear among some there could be 'burn-out' for players.
But Wilshere is adamant he would love to play if selected, saying: "The Olympics are going to be massive in London.
"It will be brilliant. It would be a dream to play in the Olympics."

The verdict is in on the newcastle felon: very influential for the first 20 minutes, but they must have subbed him off when I wasn't looking, b/c I didn't see him again all game.

Mad props to the castle for taking a chunk out of manu as well as us. Losing carroll has gotta hurt, but they have a great spirit on the field and in the stands. Its good to have them back in the league even if it cost us four points.

United's title charge slowed by Newcastle

NEWCASTLE, England (AP)

Manchester United's Premier League title charge was slowed by Newcastle on Tuesday, the leaders being held to a 0-0 draw to end a run of three consecutive wins.
The point took Man United seven points clear of Arsenal before the second-place London club plays at Tottenham on Wednesday.

United was denied a penalty kick in stoppage when Javier Hernandez was instead booked for diving after being challenged by Newcastle defender Danny Simpson.
''I didn't feel like I touched him,'' Simpson said. ''I feel like he went down too soft.''
But United manager Alex Ferguson hit out at referee Lee Probert.
''It was a clear penalty. It's an insult because he's booked him,'' Ferguson said. ''I thought the referee had a good game tonight, but he's let himself down by booking the player.
''If it's not a penalty, fine. But to book him is an insult. There is definitely contact, no doubt about that.''

Ferguson claimed not to see Newcastle's earlier penalty claim, in which Peter Lovenkrands felt he was tripped by United midfielder Anderson.
''The more obvious penalty was Peter Lovenkrands - it's an absolute cert,'' Newcastle manager Alan Pardew said. ''It was a story of two penalties: one that definitely was for us, and one that wasn't for them.''
United has five matches left in pursuit of a record 19th English league title, but the draw has raised spirits at Arsenal before the north London derby.
''BIG BIG BIG thank you to Newcastle United!'' Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny wrote on his Twitter account. ''Great spirit by the team and well done (Newcastle goalkeeper) Tim Krul for motm (man-of-the-match) performance!''
In the first half at Newcastle, Krul denied Hernandez and Wayne Rooney, who returned after a two-match suspension for swearing into a TV camera during a goal celebration against West Ham.
With around 20 minutes to go, United winger Ryan Giggs curled the ball wide with the goal at his mercy after being picked out by Patrice Evra.
The draw took Newcastle up to ninth place, reaching the 40-point mark that is usually enough to be safe from relegation in the team's first season back in the Premier League.
''I think we owe it to ourselves and to the rest of the league that we put in a full performance (at Blackpool) on Saturday,'' Pardew said. ''I think with the commitment we've shown tonight, the points we've got, the goals we've got, we're pretty much safe. But we want to finish high and put in the same commitment and effort as we have tonight against the probable champions.''

Van Persie: Cut out silly goals

Robin van Persie has warned Arsenal cannot afford any more "criminal" lapses in concentration if they are to beat Tottenham at White Hart Lane.
The Gunners missed a golden chance to close the gap on leaders Manchester United down to four points when van Persie slotted home a penalty deep into eight minutes of stoppage time against Liverpool at Emirates Stadium on Sunday - only for the Reds to go up the other end and equalise with a spot-kick of their own from Dirk Kuyt after Emmanuel Eboue had pushed over Lucas.

United could now extend their advantage further with a positive result at Newcastle on Tuesday, heaping more pressure on Arsene Wenger's men to pick up maximum points against from the highly unpredictable north London derby.
Arsenal have made throwing away winning positions something of a habit this season, coasting 2-0 at half-time of their home clash against Spurs in November only to lose and then they failed to see out victory at Newcastle despite having raced into a 4-0 lead inside 26 minutes before caving into a Toon Army onslaught after Abou Diaby was sent off.
Holland striker van Persie insists that alarming trait must be eradicated if the Gunners are to stay in touch with United ahead of their May 1 showdown at Emirates Stadium.
"This has happened too often, in my opinion," van Persie told Arsenal TV Online.
"If you look at our history, when we are in front, when we are safe, when we have the three points in our pocket, we do concede goals.
"Some of them are silly goals, which we have to work on.
"We have to stay positive, but we really have to look at it because it is almost criminal to give away points like that."

Arsenal have little time to reflect on missed opportunities as they prepare to head to White Hart Lane for what is set to be another intense affair.
Van Persie was not involved when the Gunners ran out 4-1 winners after extra-time in their Carling Cup fixture earlier this season, but cannot wait to sample the derby awayday atmosphere again.
"We always look forward to playing these games," said the Holland striker.
"Maybe it is a good thing we play them this quick after a game like Sunday because we can make things right - there is no better way than [winning] at White Hart Lane
"I always say it is in these bigger games where you become a man, and it is up to us to show that."
Van Persie, 27, feels Tottenham have certainly improved in recent seasons and believes the arrival of fellow Dutchman Rafael van der Vaart can help push them back up into the Champions League places again.
"I have seen Spurs change and fair play to them, they have become a better side and been developing, they got into the top four," he said.
"This year the arrival of Rafael van der Vaart has given them a bit extra to not just stay the top six - he can be their difference from sixth spot to four or three maybe, because he gives them something extra, scoring goals, making assists, is consistent in his game and a good player."
Wednesday night's game is likely to see both of the Professional Footballers' Association 2011 awards winners in action.
Gunners midfielder Jack Wilshere collected the young player trophy while Spurs winger Gareth Bale received the main honour.
Van Persie feels his teenage team-mate is "amazing".
The Arsenal striker said: "The amount of good games Jack has played is special. I have never seen anyone who is 19 and that good in his role.
"He plays very mature - when you get older, you have the experience and know how to play each game, and sometimes I feel he has that already.
"He can play for others and help others out, so that is a gift and he is doing it very well."
England winger Theo Walcott is relishing the chance to face Wales international full-back Bale, his former team-mate when trainees at Southampton.
"Hopefully he will be more on his backfoot than I will, and he will be more worried about me than I am with him," Walcott said.
"But I will just go out there and play my game - I won't worry that my mate is playing because you are mates after the game, you don't worry about that on the pitch."

Brooking plays down Kenny blast

Sir Trevor Brooking insists Kenny Dalglish's blast at Arsene Wenger was "totally different" to the one that got Wayne Rooney into trouble.
Brooking, the Football Association's director of football development, called for action to be taken against Rooney after his actions during the Premier League clash at West Ham.

Liverpool boss Dalglish was picked up on camera making comments towards Arsenal counterpart Wenger after Sunday's 1-1 draw at the Emirates Stadium.
But Brooking believes it does not deserve to be talked about in the same way as Rooney's tirade.
He said: "It was totally different (from Rooney). The reaction straight into the camera (from Rooney) was the difference.
"I can understand why the incident at the West Ham match led to action being taken but in this one I don't think there is any comparison.
"Wherever I've been since the West Ham-Manchester United game, I don't think I've met anyone who thought it was anything other than the right decision."
Brooking believes clarification is needed regarding any such incidents in future so there is no room for dispute.
He said: "What we have to do is get all stakeholders - the Premier League, Football League, PFA [Professional Footballers' Association] and LMA [League Managers' Association] - on the same hymnsheet.

"I'd like to feel you can get to a stage where everyone just accepts the decision rather than muddying the waters.
"If anyone is still unsure why the action was taken then we should clarify it so that it's consistent.
"There has to be a clear understanding. Clarification would help us avoid a continued debate."
Brooking reckons it is unfair to point the finger at big stars such as Rooney when people discuss a perceived lack of respect in football.
He said: "We are always conscious as managers and players that what is reflected at the weekend in the professional game is an issue.
"I do understand that high-profile figures do have a responsibility.
"On my travels with grassroots football, you get people saying 'you've got to improve that sort of thing' - and we will try to improve it.
"But I also think it is important from the grassroots level that you set your own standards.
"If you are running a team, I'd like to think the people involved will set those standards.
"I think sometimes we use someone else's behaviour as an excuse not to behave properly ourselves."
