The Sale and England wing Mark Cueto has been banned for nine weeks, for making contact with the eye or eye area of the Northampton lock Christian Day. Cueto, who appeared in front of a Rugby Football Union disciplinary panel last night, will be able to play in England's World Cup warm-up Tests in August, as the ban has been backdated to 4 April, the day on which Sale imposed a six-week ban of their own.
Television footage of Sale's 53-24 defeat at Franklin's Gardens on 2 April showed Cueto, in an off-the-ball scuffle, placing his hands on Day's face. The RFU panel adjudged the offence to have been "mid-range", meaning that the recommended ban was 18 weeks. Cueto's suspension was halved after he delivered what the panel called "compelling mitigation" for his actions.
Had Cueto served the recommended 18-week suspension he would not have been eligible to play in England's first World Cup warm-up match, against Wales at Twickenham on 6 August. Martin Johnson's squad will begin their World Cup training on 20 June.
Players who have served longer bans for similar offences include the Northampton and England hooker Dylan Hartley, who in 2007 was given a 26-week ban for gouging the Wasps players Johnny O'Connor and James Haskell, and David Attoub and Julien Dupuy of Stade Français, who received 70-week and 24-week bans after a game against Ulster in 2009. Both of those bans were reduced on appeal. The South Africa flanker Schalk Burger was given an eight-week suspension, also in 2009, after putting his fingers into the eyes of the Lions wing Luke Fitzgerald.

US businessman Stan Kroenke has vowed to bring silverware back to Arsenal's dusty trophy cabinet after taking a controlling stake in the club.
Kroenke Sports Enterprises, who first bought a 9.9% share in the club in 2007, will now seek to complete a takeover of the club after increasing their stake to 62.89%.

KSE have reached undertakings with major shareholders Danny Fiszman and Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith and must now bid to buy up the remaining shares. Terms have been agreed with Arsenal shares priced at £11,750 and the club's value set at £731million.
Arsenal have not won a trophy since the FA Cup in 2005 but Kroenke has backed Arsene Wenger as manager and vowed to bring success to the Emirates Stadium.
"We are excited about the opportunity to increase our involvement with and commitment to Arsenal," he said.
"Arsenal is a fantastic club with a special history and tradition and a wonderful manager in Arsene Wenger.
"We intend to build on this rich heritage and take the club to new success."
Kroenke has asked the existing board at Arsenal to remain in place.
"I am delighted that Peter Hill-Wood has agreed to support us by continuing as chairman," Kroenke added.
"We especially wish to acknowledge and thank the board, Danny Fiszman and the Fiszman family as well as Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith and her family for the confidence they have had in me over the past years and in allowing us to move forward in this more prominent role."

KSE already own the St Louis Rams NFL team, NBA basketball franchise the Denver Nuggets, the Colorado Avalanche NHL ice hockey team and Major League Soccer side the Colorado Rapids.
As a director of Arsenal, Kroenke has already been through the Premier League's 'owners and directors test'.
KSE will have to provide the Premier League with a projected financial position to prove they can sustain running the club for the next 12 months before any takeover can be completed.
Liverpool and Blackburn have already been through that process since the Premier League's new financial rules were introduced at the start of this season.
Kroenke has committed to continue to operate the club in line with its existing "self-sustaining business model" and he will not be funding his offer with debt finance secured against the club.
Kroenke's main focus will now be on purchasing the stake of Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, who does not have a seat on the board but controls 27% of the club's holding company.
Arsenal's independent directors - Hill-Wood, Ivan Gazidis, Ken Friar, Sir Chips Keswick and Lord Harris of Peckham - are recommending that shareholders accept Kroenke's offer.
The Arsenal Supporters Trust said on Monday they had received assurances from Gazidis about the importance of fans' involvement in the ownership of the club.
The AST will discuss the takeover bid at tonight's AGM and it is expected they will advise members not to sell their shares in Arsenal Holdings PLC, to ensure supporters retain a stake in the ownership structure.
"The AST are encouraged by Kroenke's offer but the key judgement is whether the supporters are involved in the ownership," said spokesman Tim Payton.
"The AST wants to see supporters shareholders in the ownership structure and is encouraged that Kroenke does not intend to delist from the PLUS Stock Exchange.
"We have spoken to Ivan Gazidis who reiterated the importance placed on fans' involvement in their commitment to custodianship.
"The AST has always been wholly opposed to any takeover placing debt on Arsenal Football Club. It is very good news that Kroenke confirmed he has no intention of doing this."

Stan Kroenke has taken a controlling stake in Arsenal and has agreed terms for the purchase of the remaining stock of the club at £731million.
Kroenke Sports Enterprises, which has gradually built its stake in the Gunners since first buying 9.9% of shares in 2007, must now bid to buy up the remaining shares after taking their stake to approximately 62.89% after reaching undertakings with major shareholders Danny Fiszman and Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith.

Terms have also been agreed for KSE to buy up the remaining share capital at a cost of £11,750 a share.
Kroenke said in a statement to the Stock Exchange: "We are excited about the opportunity to increase our involvement with and commitment to Arsenal.
"Arsenal is a fantastic club with a special history and tradition and a wonderful manager in Arsene Wenger.

KSE have entered into a call and put option agreement with DF Nominees, the company holding Fiszman's stake, to purchase their 16.11% holding and have also received "irrevocable undertakings" from Lady Bracewell-Smith and other shareholding directors to sell their shares, totalling 16.79%.

Kroenke's main focus will now be on purchasing the stake of Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, who does not have a seat on the board but controls 27% of the club's holding company.
Gunners boss Wenger welcomed the news and said: "I have worked with Stan Kroenke at board meetings over the past couple of years and I believe he has the best interests of Arsenal at heart.
"He understands the club's heritage and traditions and our ambition to run the club in a way which protects our long-term future."
Arsenal chairman Hill-Wood, who initially said the Gunners did not want Kroenke's "sort" involved at the club when KSE bought their initial stake four years ago, added: "The board of directors and I consider it a key responsibility to protect the ethos and spirit of the club.
"Mr Kroenke, although relatively new to Arsenal, has shown himself to be a man who values and respects the history and traditions of this very special club that we cherish. We are confident that he will be a safe custodian of its future.
"At this time of transition I would like to pay particular tribute to Danny Fiszman for his immense contribution. Danny's vision and drive led the relocation to our new stadium, an historic move which will benefit the club and its many passionate fans long into the future.
"I would like to pay tribute to the important and long-standing role that the Bracewell-Smith family have played in Arsenal's history. The family have been staunch supporters of the club for over 70 years and the club is significantly indebted to them for the role that they have played in its development and success. We will be considering appropriate ways to mark this long and valued contribution."

LIVERPOOL, England (AP)

Andy Carroll scored his first goals for Liverpool since becoming the most expensive British player, striking twice in a 3-0 win over Manchester City on Monday that keeps alive his team's hopes of European football next season.

The England striker, who joined on a 35 million pound transfer from Newcastle in January, scored with a powerful shot on his favored left foot in the 13th minute and with a glancing header in the 35th.
''The first goal was a great strike and the second was a great ball in and a good flick-on,'' Liverpool manager Kenny Daglish said. ''That won't do him any harm, to score his first goals at Anfield.
''I think it is a gratifying performance for everyone.''
Dirk Kuyt had made it 2-0 just 93 seconds before Carroll's second goal as Liverpool's slick and vibrant display brought its ninth straight victory against Man City at Anfield.

Liverpool stayed sixth in the standings but moved within five points of No. 5 Tottenham in the sole Europa League qualifying position, albeit having played one more match.
Fourth-place City has also played one more game than Tottenham and is only three points above Spurs in the final Champions League berth.
Worse still for City, captain Carlos Tevez was replaced in the 16th minute with a hamstring injury that looks certain to rule him out of the FA Cup semifinal against Manchester United on Saturday.
''His hamstring is very difficult for Saturday. It is very difficult as it is only five days away. We'll try (to get him fit) but we probably need two weeks,'' said City manager Roberto Mancini, who also apologized for his team's display.
''I am sorry for the fans. We only started to play after 20 minutes.''
Due to a defensive crisis that has claimed Daniel Agger, Glen Johnson, Martin Kelly and Sotirios Kyrgiakos to injury or illness, Daglish gave 18-year-old John Flanagan a debut at right back.
With the semifinal in mind, Mancini made three changes from the team that thrashed Sunderland 5-0 last week.
Striker Edin Dzeko, still to score in eight league matches since joining from Wolfsburg in January, replaced Mario Balotelli and midfielders Gareth Barry and James Milner came in for Nigel de Jong and David Silva.
Liverpool started with plenty of verve, passing the ball from wing to wing as Luis Suarez probed for openings just behind Carroll.
Carroll's first goal came after a speculative long-range shot from Raul Meireles was blocked by Vincent Kompany. The ball landed for him to strike a low swerving shot that flew past 'keeper Joe Hart in a goal reminiscent of his first for England last month against Ghana.
Desperate lunges by City players had blocked goal-bound shots on three occasions before Kuyt collected his ninth league goal of the season, sliding the ball across Hart and inside the far post in the 34th minute.
Almost immediately it was 3-0.
Carroll competed with Aleksandar Kolarov in an aerial battle near the penalty spot, flicking the ball from Meireles' pinpoint cross beyond a diving Hart.
After such a dominant first-half display, Liverpool failed to reach similar heights after the break, with City midfielder Yaya Toure's powerful drive forcing Reds goalkeeper Pepe Reina into making the best save of the second period.
The burgeoning partnership between Liverpool's forwards almost brought Carroll a hat trick, his header from Suarez's chipped pass just looping onto the roof of the net in the 87th minute.
''I thought we thoroughly deserved victory,'' Daglish said. ''The way we went about our work was a great credit to ourselves and the football club.''

Manchester United winger Nani has admitted he is "disappointed" not to have been nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award.
Nani was a surprise omission from the seven candidates for the senior award despite being nominated for the Young Player of the Year award.

Nani made it 18 assists for the season after setting up both goals in Saturday's win over Fulham and the 24-year-old admits he is upset not to be in running for the top prize.
"I think I have been doing well, so I am disappointed not to be there," said Nani.
"But there's still a lot of work to do this season. I am strong and hope to focus on my improvements every season and I hope to have more opportunities.
"I don't like to speak about other players or people who make decisions. If I want to be there, I have to show that on the pitch.
"Of course, everyone has an opinion, and I hope next time people will look more to me and what I am doing, if I am doing well."

Bruce worried by injury list

Exasperated Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is to launch an inquiry into why so many of his players have suffered injuries in games this season.
Lee Cattermole and Kieran Richardson had both limped off by the time 23 minutes of the 2-0 home defeat by Liverpool on March 20 had elapsed, while John Mensah and Richardson again failed to last beyond the half-time whistle on Saturday as West Brom won 3-2 at the Stadium of Light.

Bruce has repeatedly insisted he does not want to make injuries an excuse for the club's disastrous run of form, which has seen them collect just a single point from their last eight Premier League games.
However, he is concerned at the regularity with which he is having to make early substitutions.
Bruce said: "It isn't happening on the training ground, it happens out there all the time in the match.
"It's something we will have to analyse. It is not a coincidence. We have had five operations and all five of them have broken down, so it is hampering us.
"I am not trying to blame anybody - I will take the blame - but we will have to look into it as to the reason why it keeps recurring like it is at the moment."
Bruce's team on Saturday included two men - defender Michael Turner and striker Danny Welbeck - who have just returned from long-term knee injuries, while Fraizer Campbell is close to doing the same.
However, Titus Bramble is struggling to play again this season because of a cartilage problem and goalkeeper Craig Gordon is currently fit enough only to sit on the bench as he continues with a specially-designed programme designed to help him avoid knee surgery.

In addition, midfielder David Meyler has managed only five appearances this season because of serious knee injuries, making Bruce's concern understandable.
He said: "It's been particularly frustrating from the offset, really, that we have had big trauma injuries to big players of ours.
"Unfortunately in the end, it does catch up with you. You can maybe get away with it for a couple of weeks, but when you are talking months like Michael Turner and Fraizer Campbell and David Meyler and Danny Welbeck...
"Everywhere I look, people have missed three and four months, which has been far, far too many, and that's why I have got to ask now why, why is it us?
"We will try to get to the bottom of that, if I can."
Sunderland's woes have been compounded by a slide from the fringes of the race for Europe to 13th place, where they remain vulnerable to an attack from the sides below them desperately fighting the pull of a relegation zone.
The Black Cats are six points clear of trouble with six games left to play, but head for Bruce's former club Birmingham on Saturday knowing a continuation of their recent form could prove disastrous.
However, their remaining fixtures include clashes with the Blues, Wigan, Wolves and West Ham, who are all worse off, and their fate remains within their own hands.
Saturday's defeat by the Baggies, a game in which they twice led, did not go down well on Wearside, although Bruce continues to enjoy the support of owner Ellis Short and chairman Niall Quinn.
But fans who were more than dismayed at Darren Bent's £24million for Aston Villa in January have started to voice their disapproval at a run which has seen the club win just once in the nine games since.
