Redknapp: No summer Bale sale

Harry Redknapp has again rubished suggestions Tottenham could be tempted to cash in on in-demand winger Gareth Bale this summer.
The Wales international is a frontrunner for the Professional Footballers' Association Player and Young Player of the Year awards, having been confirmed as a nominee for both honours on Friday.

Italian giants Inter Milan are believed to be interested after witnessing two breathtaking Bale performances against them in this season's Champions League.
Premier League leaders Manchester United are also rumoured to be weighing up a bid, but Redknapp believes any sale would be a step in the wrong direction.
"If Tottenham start selling players like Gareth Bale then you have to accept that you're never going to be a top club," he told Sky Sports News.
"I'm sure the chairman, Daniel [Levy], wants to be a top four club.
"Man United, Chelsea and Arsenal do it every year, if we want to do it we have to keep improving, not selling players.
"Otherwise you'll do it one year and you might never do it again."
Tottenham are five points shy of fourth-placed Manchester City at present, while their Champions League hopes are hanging by a thread following Tuesday's 4-0 drubbing at Real Madrid.
Striker Peter Crouch received his marching orders early in that game, but Redknapp refuses to blame the England international and instead thanked him for his seven goals en route to the quarter-finals.
"He's been low has Peter, he's been really disappointed in himself, he feels like he's let everybody down," said the Tottenham boss.
"But without Crouchy we wouldn't even have been in that game because his goals have taken us to the quarter-finals of the Champions League this year."

Arsenal keep selling their best talent (likely to happen again this summer) yet will still continue to be a top 4 club. Selling Bale could do some good. One, it'll keep the player happy and let him play CL football and two, his hefty price would bring in 2-3 talented footballers on the Spurs squad. Win-win. Lets be honest though, with or without Bale, Tottenham dont stand much of a chance at lifting PL or CL titles.

Redknapp: Don't blame Crouch

Harry Redknapp has urged Tottenham fans not to hold a grudge against Peter Crouch over his damaging dismissal against Real Madrid.
The genuine belief that Spurs could overcome Real in their Champions League quarter-final clash all but evaporated on Tuesday night as Jose Mourinho's team ran out 4-0 winners at the Bernabeu.

The story may have been a lot different had Crouch not seen red for two late fouls in the opening 15 minutes.
Within seconds of the rash challenge on Marcelo that earned Crouch his second yellow, the internet was awash with comments poking fun at the towering striker - some of them from Spurs fans.
The 30-year-old apologised for his sending off and looked chirpy at the club's training ground on Friday ahead of the Premier League game against Stoke.
Redknapp admits Crouch's confidence has been hit by the sending off, but he has called on the fans to remember that without the striker's seven European goals, the club would not have made the last eight.
"Crouchy has been low and feels he's let everybody down, but you have to remember that without Crouchy we wouldn't have been there," Redknapp said.
"His goals took us to the quarter-finals. He has won games for us. He's a great lad and I have got so much time for him as a person and a player. He's sorry for what he did but we have to move on."
Having beaten both Milan heavyweights to get to the quarter-finals, there was a clear sense of disappointment as the players filed out of the Bernabeu on Tuesday night.
Redknapp insists, however, that the first-leg defeat has not dented his team's confidence, and he is now determined to put their nightmare trip to the Spanish capital behind them.
"We're in a fantastic mood. I have not had to lift the players," Redknapp said.
"We've had a great season, with one bit of a blip the other day.
"I was ok, I wasn't on the floor when I got home or anything.
"I got home at 5.30 in the morning, had a cup of tea and took the dogs for a walk. I was fine.
"I've got nothing to get low about. It was a disappointing game but I couldn't come away feeling we hadn't worked as hard as we could.
"Playing with 10 against the incredible players they have is impossible. We did an incredible job hanging in there."
Spurs' recent poor form, particularly against teams in the bottom half of the table, has seen them fall five points behind fourth place with eight matches remaining.
The Londoners have not won for almost two months and have failed to score in their last four, but Redknapp insists he is not worried about his side's poor run.
"I'm not concerned about our form at all," the Spurs boss said.
The home of the best LIVE soccer and rugby awaits at FoxSoccer.tv -- don't miss a second of the action.

"We've made lots of chances, but the form isn't bad at all. We have had one defeat in the last nine league games. You can't always win. I have been pleased with the way that we have been playing.
"It's tough to break into the top four. We beat Manchester City to do it last year and they went out and spent about £140million on players to make sure that they got there this year. That's how hard it is, but we still have a good chance."
Aaron Lennon, who pulled out of Tuesday's game at the last minute due to illness, will be given a late fitness test on Saturday along with injured Croatian duo Vedran Corluka and Niko Kranjcar.
There was some good news from the treatment room concerning Ledley King though. The injury-plagued defender has not played since October but no longer requires a second operation on his groin problem.
"Ledley is not having surgery," Redknapp added.
"He's doing a little bit of fitness training. Let's see how he goes. It's week to week with him."

Adebayor is currently on loan with the Spanish giants and has proved an astute signing for Jose Mourinho's troops, scoring a crucial double in their 4-0 Champions League quarter-final first leg win over Tottenham on Tuesday.
Real have the option to buy the 27-year-old at the end of the season and the former Arsenal man has admitted he would be keen to stay at Santiago Bernabeu.
Mancini has always insisted the door is not closed on Adebayor at Eastlands, but the City boss has now confirmed he is happy to sanction a permanent move.
"I'm happy he scored two goals and I hope he'll continue to score," said the Italian.
"At the end of the season we will see. If he wants to stay, he can."
Meanwhile Mancini has expressed his belief that City can enjoy a strong finish to the season as their injury problems continue to ease.
"We always had a good spirit," he said. "But I think we have improved a lot. We were tired for a month as we had injured players, but now things are better.
"I think the players are looking fresher. I think we can have a strong finish. We had more of problems when we were playing every three days."

I think the question is not whether Man City will let him make the permanent move but if Real actually want to extend his stay and give him a contract. He was sent on loan to score goals for Real and keep their title hopes alive, which he has done admirably. Will real really fork over the money for a buyout? I think they got what they wanted out of him and they have several players who can fill his void shall they decide not to keep him. Either way I wish he gets what he wants. The last thing I would want is for real not to buy him and he gets sent back to city after already publically makeing it known that he wished to continue his career in Madrid. This would make him unhappy and he would not perfom at his best.

To compare Ade this season to Torres is a joke, the first game Ade played for Real he scored and he continues to do so given more match time.If this situation was reversed everyone here would be saying good signing for Chelsea.
He's getting the job done for Real unlike Torres.

nikolai you took it right out of my mouty ... the question really is has he gotten the job done for Real? clear answer ...yes. They can take who they want - Tevez, Torres or who ever.
Benzema is inconsistent, Higuain is injury prone and with back problems, you never know, it could flare up any minute. Murinho is wise enough to know Adebayor brings a new dimension to the team, a much needed aerial presence, he can hold the ball and causes problems for the defenders, just ask Gallas or Jenas or Gomez. Better value then Torres, thats for sure. as for Teves they can have him if they want him , i got tired of his whining about living in England a long time ago. To quote Beyonce " dont you ever get to thinking you are irreplaceable. (City) can have another you by tomorrow".

Big signing for Chels and he havent been showing up yet we will all bow dwn to torres to b better than ade? wat has torres contributed yet he had the highest signing in mid season transfers. In order to miss a goal u gotta b in the position. So look at the stats for the season...he might have more goals than strikers who played a whole season

Unless Adebayor really tears it up in the months of the season, I don't see this happening. He wasn't even their second choice when they originally obtained him in the winter transfer window and he really hasn't done enough to warrant a move to a club like Real.

Neville blasts 'inconsistent' FA

RivalsDM

Updated Apr 8, 2011 12:31 PM ET
Gary Neville has accused the FA of being "reactive and very inconsistent" in their handling of the Wayne Rooney swearing scandal.
Rooney begins a two-match ban when he sits out Manchester United's Premier League encounter with Fulham at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The 25-year-old will also miss next weekend's FA Cup semi-final with Manchester City at Wembley after the FA confirmed they had upheld their original decision after Rooney had challenged it, believing the punishment for his four-letter outburst at West Ham last Saturday had been too severe.
United are not too impressed either and manager Sir Alex Ferguson has taken the opportunity to lambast Superintendent Mark Payne, responsible for managing responses to crime and operations in Wolverhampton, over his pointed comments yesterday and then raise question marks about the pressure that was applied by the FA to last week's referee Lee Mason.
Now Neville has waded in.
Not scared of courting controversy during his own playing days, the 36-year-old is to join Sky Sports as a pundit from next season.
He also has a high-profile testimonial with Juventus to arrange following confirmation the game will take place at Old Trafford on May 24.
Clearly though, retirement has not tempered his opinions.
And on the FA's handling of Rooney, the man who once nearly led the England team into strike action when Rio Ferdinand was stood down from the Three Lions following his missed drugs test, Neville is particularly forceful.
"The FA are very reactive and very inconsistent with their reactions," he said.
"There is no rule in place that says swearing on camera brings you a two-match ban. This week, they have created one.
"Now they must make sure they continue that moving forward.
"Everybody caught swearing on camera will have to be banned for two matches."
In 2006, after Neville had been fined £5,000 for his excessive celebrations of a matchwinning goal against Liverpool, he claimed the FA were trying to take the emotion out of football, believing the governing body wanted matches to be played by "robots".
He is still of that view now, even though he feels asking for restraint is impossible.
"For the last 20 years my grandma has told me that she has caught me swearing on camera," said Neville.
"It happens 20 times in every match. I cannot understand why this time makes a difference.
"You cannot take the emotion out of football. The spur of the moment. The instinct. The release. The reaction. That is life.
"Some people cry, some people kiss, some people scowl. With most, if they are scoring a goal in the last minute to win a match, they have no idea how they are going to react.
"In the European Cup final when Ole scored, I just laid on the floor. That was not normal for me. I used to run and flail my arms at people.
"You can't remove the human element and the passion and emotion.
"They (the FA) want football players to remember their working class roots, then when they show some level of emotion that means that they care, they get knocked for it.
"That is the bit I could never understand."
Sir Alex Ferguson is equally non-plussed, although he is adamant Mason will end up as the major loser.
"He has put himself in a terrible position," said the United boss.
"He has been put under pressure. There is no doubt about that.
"It is hard to imagine the referee would send a player off for scoring a hat-trick.

"But he has now put himself in the spotlight. If he doesn't send a player off for swearing the question will be, has he got double standards?
"It is a very difficult position the lad is in. I feel for him. I really do. I don't know where his career is going to go now."
For Payne, there was rather less sympathy, with Ferguson believing the superintendent has merely spotted an opportunity to put himself in the spotlight.
"Everyone has an opinion today," he said.
"There is an issue in the modern world of a need to be noticed.
"There is a wee guy, sitting down there in the Midlands, probably never been recognised in his life, managed to elevate himself to whatever it is in the police force.
"Have you ever seen Wolverhampton on a Saturday night? Do police ever arrest anyone for swearing on a Saturday night? Dearie me. That is a good one."

The PFA have announced that Tottenham winger Bale and Arsenal playmaker Nasri were among seven nominees from the Premier League for each of their of their top prizes.
The pair are likely to face stiff competition in both categories, however, as the contest is generally perceived to be wide open.
Bale's Spurs team-mate Rafael Van der Vaart is also in contention for the main prize along with Manchester City's Carlos Tevez, Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic, West Ham midfielder Scott Parker and Blackpool talisman Charlie Adam.
England and Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart, Arsenal starlet Jack Wilshere, Everton's Seamus Coleman and Manchester United pair Nani and Javier Hernandez are the other contenders for the young player gong.
Bale and Nasri are bidding to emulate Andy Gray (1977) and Cristiano Ronaldo (2007) as the only players to previously win both awards in the same year.
Wayne Rooney was last year nominated in both categories but took the chief prize while James Milner was young player of the year.
PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor believes the lists are reflective of an exciting season.
Taylor said: "It is certainly very competitive. There has been no outstanding favourite so it will be very interesting to see who people think are favourites.
"Last year Wayne Rooney had an excpetional season.
"This year there are some very good contenders and it is nice to see some homegrown players in there as well. That is encouraging."

Im not degrading Giggs in any way, one the classiest men ever to step foot on a pitch but for all his glory in the PL, it is a shame hes never played a WC or a Euro. Perhaps the fact hes had summers off for the last 20 years has been a contributing factor to his body still being able to hack it at this level and Fergie manages him to perfection. The lad only plays games here and there yet is always influencial.

Villa back under-fire Houllier

Aston Villa chief executive Paul Faulkner has backed under-fire manager Gerard Houllier to keep the club in the Premier League.

They go into this weekend's fixtures just two points above the relegation zone, but Faulkner insists Houllier is still the man for the job.
"Yes, total support," he told AVTV about his position with the former Liverpool boss.
"We are focused on these last seven games, getting the points we need right now to get out of the situation we are in."
Houllier, meanwhile, has set his players a 10-point survival target and insists "excuses are not an option".
He believes Villa will need 44 points to guarantee top flight football for another campaign ahead of Sunday's home clash with Newcastle.
They will also take on Stoke, Wigan and Liverpool at Villa Park, plus away meetings with West Ham, West Brom and Arsenal.
Houllier said: "The number of points needed to stay up will be higher than normal.
"I think ideally 10 points will put you in a safe position and that is what we want.
"It could be eight or nine but you do not know.
"We have four home games and three away and what we require is results.
"Excuses are not an option. We want results and points."
