Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti is standing by coach Leonardo in the wake of the club's 5-2 loss to Schalke, accepting that fatigue was to blame following a midnight chat with the Brazilian.

The heavy home loss Tuesday in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals came three days after Inter lost to AC Milan 3-0 in a crucial derby.
''I think this was all due to fatigue. If that's the reason, well then let's try to get back on track with the players that we have,'' Moratti said, having met with Leonardo in the San Siro changing room into the early hours of Wednesday morning.
''We chatted. He's an intelligent person and he's gaining experience - experiences that are not so easy,'' Moratti said. ''Football is also related to luck and timing. This is a moment we need to get through but we're all united.''
Moratti added that Leonardo is not accustomed to such a sudden change in fortunes. Inter had entered the derby on a roll, having registered a come-from-behind win over Bayern Munich in the previous round of the Champions League and gone five matches unbeaten in Serie A.
''I certainly didn't find him with his morale up,'' Moratti said. ''Nothing has changed for me toward Leonardo. For him, definitely something has changed.''

The 41-year-old Leonardo replaced Rafa Benitez midway through this season, having clashed with Milan president Silvio Berlusconi last year in his first season as a head coach.
Inter trails Milan by five points in Serie A and also faces a steep challenge in the second leg with Schalke next week.
''I know how these things work, I know how cruel football can be and I know that you've got to keep moving forward with the same attitude,'' Moratti said. ''We've got to transform these losses into something positive, although it won't be easy.''

moratti is being very generous . even though there were absences especially lucio, but responsability has to fall on someone specifically on the coach for that awful defense.he knew that people were missing but had no plan or clue on how to hold or even try to hold the line on defense.perhaps he underestimat shalke's attack. if the loss would have been kept at a minimum they could have won the second leg when the squad would have been full. instead its a hopeless situation and not only in champions but also at home in serie a. two very big mountains to climb . not only his fault, there were also other circumstances.but leonardo has shown not to be what many thought he was.

I think Inter's issue will now be recovering from the Milan loss.

When Leonardo was manager at Milan, after we lost each of the derbies it'd take us maybe 3-4 games to get our confidence back.

Brazz Leo did fine against lesser teams, but in the matches that mattered Inter got pounded and it had a lot to do with tactics. The matches that count is where you can tell who is up for the task at hand.

I think overall Leonardo is a pretty good fit for Inter. He has elevated the team considerably since taking over from Benitez. Without Leonardo, Inter would have been far worse off. Losing to Schalke like that is tough, especially at home, but hey, which team hasn't taken a beating like that on occasion? Leonardo simply needs to adjust his tactics a bit, from "Attack Attack Attack" to "Hey, maybe I should do something about my defense". I think long-term, Leo will be good for Inter.

Very sort sighted on your part. Leonardo took Milan as far as they could last season and now has Inter playing much better than what they displayed prior to his arrival. Inter's defense is horrendous if Lucio is not playing. That kid Ronochia is a nightmare. How about some patience. Benitez was already not given a fare shot and now your ready to move on from another coach.

I am completely elated and overjoyed regarding Schalke's commanding 5:2 win at Inter! That said, I still am worried about the second leg next week in Gelsenkirchen. I know that the odds are very low of Inter coming back from a three goal deficit, but it could happen. That said, I'm going to be quietly optimistic about Schalke's chances of progressing to the Champions League Semi-Finals. However, I will keep in mind that Inter has the quality and depth to pull off an improbably upset in the next leg. Hopefully that does not happen.

Now my ultimate dream of seeing Schalke and Manchester United play each other is coming closer to reality. Now the Red Devils have to keep up their end of the bargain and beat Chelsea! That will be a very tall order, though.

I am sure about Leonardo. He needs to go at the end of the season. Inter's only real possibility for a title is now Coppa Italia, with a very slight chance at the Scudetto. But after that drubbing, Inter do not deserve the Scudetto this year so scratch that!

Disgraceful display yesterday. No effort, and even less intelligence. Only highlight was Stank's bullet from midfield.

It was one of those nights and Leonardo has done a decent job with Inter in general but these last 2 losses to Milan and here are just inexcusable because this are the games that make or break your season. Not sure about Leonardo to be honest. I don't think he has what it takes to take any team to the next level.

This result was a shocker. Not so much that Inter lost but that they lost 5-2 and twice had the lead. If Inter had lost 4-2 I would still think they had a legit chance of progressing but 5-2 is almost imposible. Really 4-0 or 5-1 are the only reasonable results that will lead them to the next phase of the competition.

Timbe: Mechi ya leo ni fainali Send to a friend Wednesday, 06 April 2011 21:31

Harry: Lennon not a scapegoat

Harry Redknapp insists he has no problem with Aaron Lennon and denies that the winger "bottled it" when he pulled out of the Real Madrid clash.
Redknapp had to replace Lennon with Jermaine Jenas just five minutes before the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final clash at the Bernabeu after an illness he had since Sunday left him feeling drained following the warm-up.
The England winger reacted furiously to claims that he had passed on the opportunity to showcase his talents against Real, revealing on Twitter on Wednesday that he had been given antibiotics to solve the problem at the weekend.

Lennon said: "Believe me this is one game I did not want to miss and still devastated now.
"But (I) will not be made a scapegoat, saying they only knew just before kick-off.
"Saying I fell ill before the game is bull****. I fell ill on Sunday morning when the medical team put me on antibiotics, but (it) only got worse before Tuesday."
Redknapp watched on as his side capitulated to a 4-0 defeat to the nine-time European champions, who took a huge step towards the semi-finals with a brace from Emmanuel Adebayor and strikes from Cristiano Ronaldo and Angel Di Maria.
The Tottenham boss denied that he has any problem with Lennon's decision to withdraw, despite the influence he could have had on the game had he been fit.
"No one is blaming Aaron for not playing. He's been fantastic for us. I've got no problems with the kid whatsoever," Redknapp told talkSPORT.
"I was sitting in the dressing room before the match, looking at his face. He's normally chirpy before he goes out and I looked and he didn't look well.
"I had to make a decision. It wasn't Aaron's fault. He didn't bottle anything. The kid wasn't well. No one's made him a scapegoat."
Redknapp handed in the team sheet with Lennon's name on during the warm-up and only changed his starting XI after the former Leeds man complained of feeling he had no energy five minutes before kick-off.
Despite Lennon being on antibiotics since Sunday, Redknapp insists he was right to select the winger in his team before he pulled out.
"Aaron hadn't been feeling well during the day. The doctor came to me and said 'look, he is on antibiotics, I think he will be OK'," Redknapp said.
"I had to make a decision. He was key to everything we wanted to do yesterday, him and Gareth Bale were really where we were looking to cause problems to Real Madrid.
"He's been fantastic for me since I've been at the club and I was desperate for him to play but do I take the chance of sending the kid out when he doesn't feel he's got any strength or energy to go and play in a game like that. So I said, 'look I know how much you want to play but you can't take the chance here if you don't feel you can go out and do yourself justice' and that was it."
Lennon will be assessed at Tottenham's training ground tomorrow to see if he will be fit for Saturday's Premier League game against Stoke.
Four days after that match, Jose Mourinho's men will arrive at White Hart Lane looking to finish Spurs off and set up a potential Champions League semi-final tie with Barcelona.

Schalke coach Ralf Rangnick revealed how AC Milan had taught him how to beat Inter Milan ahead of their 5-2 away win in the Champions League.
Rangnick witnessed Milan's 3-0 win over the Nerazzurri at the weekend and he found in that game the key to unlock Leonardo's troops.

"We observed them in the derby against Milan and we could see there that whoever defends in numbers against Inter has got to be good on the counter-attack," he said.
"Therefore, we intentionally played attacking football. We wanted to find the holes in their defence."
Schalke ruthlessly tore the defending champions apart and could even have scored seven as they hit the woodwork twice.
"It could have ended 5-10 or 4-8," added Rangnick. "It was a fantastic match and, for us, a marvellous evening.
"For me personally, it was the best game ever.
"If anybody had told us before the game that we would have beaten Inter by three goals, I would have said that they were crazy."
But Rangnick is not getting carried away since there are still 90 minutes left to play and Inter showed in the last round against Schalke's Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich that they are capable of coming from behind, even away from home.
"We are not thinking of the semi-finals at all yet," he said.
"We have put ourselves into a good position, but the final step has yet to be taken.
"Before then, we have an important Bundesliga match against Wolfsburg on Saturday and we have got to focus our attentions on that game now."

Siasia ataka Eagles ipige kambi Tanzania Send to a friend Wednesday, 06 April 2011 21:30

LAGOS, Nigeria

Farfan loving life after Magath

Jefferson Farfan has slammed former Schalke coach Felix Magath, insisting the mood at the Bundesliga club is much improved following his exit.
Magath left Schalke under a cloud amid dressing room disharmony, despite leading the club to the DFB-Pokal final and the last eight of the Champions League.

Ralf Rangnick was subsequently brought in as Magath's replacement, with the new man masterminding last night's remarkable 5-2 win over Inter Milan in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the San Siro.
"The psychological pressure of Mr Magah has gone and now we are enjoying ourselves again at Schalke," Farfan told Sport Bild magazine.
"The new coach is trying to construct a relationship of faith with the players."
Farfan had a stormy relationship with Magath and had been expected to move on in the summer. However, he concedes things have improved under Rangnick and can now see himself staying with the club long term.
"I am very happy at Schalke and I will do everything for this club," he said. "Schalke is my priority."
He added: "The problems between Mr Magath and myself were undeniable. There was no communication flow - the only time he would talk to me was when he was giving me a fine.
"It was just work, work, work. The time under Magath was a huge strain psychologically."
Farfan tried to leave the club in January with a move to Wolfsburg mooted. Had the transfer gone through, however, he would subsequently have found himself back under Magath's influence after the 57-year-old returned to the club as coach just days after leaving Schalke.
"I would have dropped dead," Farfan joked when asked what his reaction would have been to that scenario.
"I have considered what it would have been like and I think I would have terminated my contract and gone home to Peru.
"I would rather have shifted earth and stones back there than play under Magath."

Very interesting comments from Farfan on the ex coach and I guess sometimes change is good for a team and it looks like that was the case for Schalke.

Too bad Farfan is going to miss the return leg because of too many yellows.

Also, it's interesting to see that Rangnick is getting excellent results out of players who were on Felix Magath's hit list at Schalke: Farfan, Sarpei, Baumjohann, Escudero, and Matip.

Perhaps my harsh criticisms in the past of some of these players had more to do with Magath's inability to inspire and motivate them than with their own skills. I have to own up to that and apologize. My bad.

Jefferson Farfan is absolutely correct in his comments in this story regarding Felix Magath! It's nice to see that my criticisms of Magath during that past two seasons at Schalke were completely confirmed.

Ralf Rangnick is a million times better of a coach than Magath and the proof is in the results! At the end of their careers, I am confident that Rangnick will own more silverware than Magath. Schalke's players are now relaxed and happy and are playing the best football of their careers. Rangnick is a brilliant strategist and tactician and is a master at inspiring and motivating his players. He treats his players like human beings and always gets the most out of them! Multiple glories await FC Schalke 04 under the wise tutelage of Ralf Rangnick!

Ade eyes permanent Real deal

Emmanuel Adebayor will keep working hard to earn a permanent Real Madrid deal after his "best game" so far for the Spaniards against Tottenham.
Adebayor netted eight times in nine north London derbies against Spurs while an Arsenal player and he returned to haunt his old rivals with the first two goals in Madrid's 4-0 Champions League quarter-final first-leg triumph at the Bernabeu.

Those strikes took Adebayor's tally to five goals in 14 appearances for Madrid since joining the club on a six-month loan from Manchester City in January, and they were a timely reminder of his talents with competition for places up front hotting up.
When Adebayor was brought in, Madrid's only fit recognised striker was the out-of-form Karim Benzema, but since his arrival Benzema has exploded into life with 12 goals in 12 games prior to suffering a hamstring injury while on international duty recently.
Benzema is expected to be back soon, though, and with Gonzalo Higuain - Madrid's leading league scorer in the last two seasons - also available again after making a rapid recovery from back surgery, Adebayor knows he needs to produce performances like Tuesday night's if he is to persuade Madrid to keep him on.
When asked if he wanted to stay at Madrid, Adebayor said following the Spurs game: "Of course I do.
"I don't know at the moment [about my future]. I just keep going working hard in training. I still have one or two months left so we will see."
Regarding his all-action display, the 27-year-old said: "It was my best game for Real Madrid.
"When you join a new club the most important thing is to score. It's always special to score in the Champions League. I have to keep working hard now, keep going and keep working in training to progress.

"I'm very happy. Now we have the second leg to finish the job. It puts us in a good position going to London."
Adebayor's performance has given Jose Mourinho a selection headache for the remainder of the season.
However, the Real coach is not complaining, saying: "The important thing is that we had three strikers, I've wanted this from the very first day. We've proved that with two strikers it's very difficult and with three we are covered.
"With the injury that Benzema has, we still have one striker playing and one on the bench, and that's how it should be. And at the moment I'm happy with all three of them, who are all completely different types of players with different qualities for the team."
Madrid's success in their first appearance in the Champions League quarter-finals since 2004 has seen them take a giant step towards the last four.
However, the Madrid players are not getting ahead of themselves with a job still to be done in the second leg at White Hart Lane.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored his side's final goal, said on Spanish television: "I'm very happy because the team played well and a 4-0 win in the quarter-finals of this competition against a team like Tottenham is very good.
"Even still we need to continue working and make the most of this advantage because in football anything can happen."
Goalkeeper Iker Casillas added: "In football there is a law which says you need to respect your opponents. In the return match many things can happen, so we need to be careful.
"We can't be over-confident and we need to try and score, because that would make it even more difficult for them to bounce back."

    Spider,

I agree with you! Ozil is doing very well to keep Kaka out! He is clearly Real's worst purchase in the last 20 years in terms of costs and benefits (@vtheman) albeit injuries! You could even argue that Reyes helped Madrid more than Kaka has when not injured and Reyes was shipped off after one season, but he helped them to a title with some important goals!

Kaka would be well served going back to Italy or Brazil.

Real already has the Germanic-Turkish talisman Mesut Ozil. Kaka was damaged goods when they bought him. He is a competitor though and no doubt he wants to play so I don't think he will accept a backseat to Ozil for a prolonged period. Ozil is the future and Kaka's best days are most likley behind him.

VTHEMAN- I couldnt agree more. why get rid of Kaka one of the best Real Madrid has ever had? They would be rushing to get someone of his caliber in place then there would be the time for that player to adjust. Keep him and grow as a team.

why sell Kaka? he is expensive and isnt in form but I would keep him as he is a good reserve and they need experienced depth on the squad. Leave it up to the player whether he wants out. Same for the strikers, If all are content keep them. With injuries madrid were down to 1 striker and what's to prevent that next season? better to keep a group that can build chemistry and not have to scramble in January. Keep the squad the way it is and build. No need for imports, just build on what is there.

JJ i dont think ronaldo place is part of the discussion. the three strikers are adebayor, benzema and higuain. I think morinho will like to keep all three, and why not. he recognizes they each bring something different to the team

As a REAL MADRID fan i would have to see abit more from Ade before i would say to Keep him on a permanent basis.

He's done well on some occassions, but he's also FRUCKED up at times, being constantly offsides, and missing clear cut chances among other things. He missed some chances this season that would've helped RM in the league, but he's doing well now, but we'll see how things go against Barcelona b/c they are No SPurs

Furthermore, Ade seems to do his Best vs SPurs, and Los Blancos can't play the Tottenham all their games Next Season.

Matter of fact, REAL MADRID will NOT BE playing them Next season, in all likelihood. so let's see how he does against the other teams & also, let's see what WORLD CLASS Strikers become available in the SUmmer. HOPING for Carlitos Tevez.

Kidunda: Uchovu umetukosesha medali Send to a friend Wednesday, 06 April 2011 21:27

Imani Makongoro

Alisema,"Tulilala njiani hatukupumzika tulikuwa tumechoka, tulipima uzito saa 6.30, tukaenda kula saa 8.30 mchana huku mapambano yalikuwa yanaanza saa 11 jioni."

Redknapp: One of those nights

Harry Redknapp felt Tottenham had been left with an "impossible task" against Real Madrid after losing Peter Crouch to an early red card.
Spurs were already trailing to an Emmanuel Adebayor header when Crouch was dismissed in the 15th minute for the second of two bookings, and hosts Madrid took full advantage to claim a 4-0 first-leg victory at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night and make a huge stride towards the semi-finals of the Champions League.

Spurs, who saw Aaron Lennon pull out just prior to kick-off because of illness, managed to keep Madrid to just a one-goal advantage by half-time, but Jose Mourinho's men took the match away from the visitors with three second-half goals from former Arsenal striker Adebayor, Angel Di Maria and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Redknapp admitted: "It was a difficult night. I lost Aaron Lennon just as the team were walking onto the pitch, he didn't feel well enough to play so we had to change that straight away, and obviously to go down to 10 men is difficult, you need a miracle here to win with 10 men.
"Better teams than us would probably have struggled tonight. It was an uphill task, an impossible task. For the first half I thought we did fantastic with 10 men, we had a couple of good opportunities on the break but we ran out of steam, with Gareth (Bale) cramping up, and we lost our right back (Vedran Corluka). It was one of those nights.
"Obviously we're disappointed. What do you do about the third goal? An unbelievable finish, they've got quality players and you need to have 11 to have any chance and be at your best here."
Crouch picked up his first caution in the eighth minute for a foul on Sergio Ramos and then seven minutes later got his marching orders following a late challenge on Marcelo near the Madrid box.
Redknapp said of the England striker's dismissal: "I haven't spoken to Crouchy to be honest, I'm disappointed obviously, it's all we needed to go down to 10 men so early in the game."

The loss means Spurs need to create a huge upset to avoid tumbling out of the competition in the second leg at White Hart Lane, but while Redknapp knows the odds are stacked against them, he is refusing to concede the tie is definitely over.
"Well, it's going to be very difficult. It certainly couldn't be much more difficult than being 4-0 down to Real Madrid, but we're at home, we'll give it a go," said Redknapp, whose side gave Inter Milan a huge scare in the group stages after trailing 4-0 at half-time at the San Siro by pulling back three second-half goals.
"It's never over until it's over and you never know, though obviously we've got a mountain to climb, there's no doubt about that.
"I knew it would be a difficult night here but to come here and lose a player after 10 minutes made it impossible for us really.
"It was a case then of trying to hold on, even at 2-0 I thought 'let's get out of here with 2-0 and we've done a miracle', but we ran out of legs in the end. We ended up with people out there who were struggling, so it was difficult.
"But we've done fantastic (in the Champions League), it's been a great experience so far, and there's still a game to come at White Hart Lane."
Redknapp added of Crouch's dismissal: "I haven't seen a replay of the tackle, the referee made the decision and I'm sure he made what he thought was the right decision.
"I haven't seen it but he (Crouch) shouldn't have taken the chance, he's already got a yellow card, he shouldn't take the chance that he might get a red card, so that's disappointing."
Madrid, who are playing in the quarter-finals for the first time since 2004 after six successive years of being dumped out at the last-16 stage, are now overwhelming favourites to progress through to a semi-final showdown with either arch-rivals Barcelona or Shakhtar Donetsk.
However, Mourinho refused to concede his side's place in the last four had been secured by Tuesday night's thrashing.
"We're not in the semis, last time that Real Madrid played in the quarters we also won at home, 4-2 I think (against Monaco), and then we were out," said Mourinho, who is looking to become the first coach to conquer Europe with three different clubs.
"In the second-leg match in England, anything is possible, we have to respect this high-quality opponent and we have to go there and play a serious match and try to get through to the next level."
Asked if he had any sympathy for his old friend Redknapp after Spurs were reduced to 10 men so early on, Mourinho added: "I feel complete sympathy. I have good experience of playing with 10 men in the Champions league, I know how difficult it is.
"You just have to defend, if you've got an advantage you defend, defend and defend. And if you are already losing and you have to attack, it's an impossible job and I think they will try everything in the second leg.
"They are top people, they have belief. It's not an easy place to play and they will fight for sure."

Schalke, Real Madrid zakandamiza Ulaya Send to a friend Wednesday, 06 April 2011 21:24

LONDON, England

Schalke iliwatandika mabingwa watetezi, Inter Milan mabao 5-2 wakati Madrid iliilowesha Tottenham 4-0.
