TFF: Simba waache siasa

For Dar es Salaam basketball fans, the National Indoor Stadium is a place to go on Sunday as it hosts the RBA League final between ABC and JKT.Acting Dar es Salaam regional commissioner Sadick Meck Sadiq will be the chief guest at what promises to be a mouth-watering final.

The anxiously awaited duel will be preceded by women's RBA final pitting traditional foes Jeshi Stars against JKT Stars.ABC booked a place in the final at the expense of Pazi while JKT cruised through after overcoming pre-tournament favourites Vijana in the second semi-final at the same venue last weekend.
Dar es Salaam Basketball (DB) official Mbaga Mwamboma said yesterday that preparations for the two finals were on course.

"The women's final between Jeshi Stars and JKT Stars will start at 2pm while the match of the day between ABC and JKT will start two hours later," Mwamboma said. The day will also see women's teams Police and Tanzania Prisons face off in the third place playoff. The match will start at 10am at the same venue.

At noon, falling giants Vijana, popularly known as City Bulls, will take on their arch-rivals Pazi in the men's third place play-off.
"I am optimistic that those who will turn up at the National Indoor Stadium will have lots of fun because the teams lined up for both men and women's finals boast formidable squads," Mwamboma said.

The third place playoff matches are also expected to be exciting because Vijana and Pazi, once rated the country's big guns, command huge following in the city. The DB official admitted that they faced various hitches in organising this year's league, one of them being unwillingness of sponsors.

"We are happy that the league is now inching towards the home stretch. We were afraid that lack of sponsorship could deny it the excitement and competitive edge it deserves," he said.He said they have set aside trophies and medals for the winners of Sunday's finals and third place playoffs.

Osiah: Acheni kuigawa Taifa Stars Send to a friend Wednesday, 23 March 2011 19:59

Manucho vows to snatch win Send to a friend Wednesday, 23 March 2011 22:00

Nairobi. With only two days to that do-or-die tie against the Palancas Negras on Saturday at Nyayo National Stadium, Angolan star striker Manucho Goncalves was very confident about escaping with a win in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

Manucho said the match would be "very difficult" but that the visitors would do everything to get the three points in Nairobi.

"We are at a very tight position at the moment. But if we want to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations finals then we must top the table," said the former Manchester United forward.

Forget his lumbering performance during the Nations Cup in Angola last year or during his spell with the Red Devils and Hull City in the English Premiership two seasons ago.

In Manucho, Harambee Stars will face a lethal striker whose achievements with the national team exceed anything to do with his recent form.

Speaking to portalangop.co.ao yesterday, Manucho said his team will continue to work hard in order to win the top honours in Group J. Uganda are currently leading in the group while Kenya lie at the bottom of the table.

At the same time, Angola's experienced midfielder Andre Makamba has returned to the national team after missing in action from the squad over the past one year.

Angola and Kenya are no strangers to each other, having meet in the Nations Cup in 2007 when Harambee Stars won 2-1 as Patrick Oboya and Dennis Oliech scored.

Many people might argue that the visitors were relaxed since they had already qualified for the 2008 Ghana finals.

Stars will however need to recall that ‘2007 spirit' – or perhaps try and emulate their neighbours Uganda, who shocked the 2006 World Cup team.

Uganda Cranes' David Obua, of Scottish club Hearts, opened the scoring at Mandela Stadium before Andrew Mwesigwa and Geoffrey Sserunkuma struck after half-time to seal the win for the home side.

Though it is too early to say that the chances for Harambee Stars are doomed, the class of opposition ahead does not give them any realistic hopes.

Finish line too far for kenya's Linet, again Send to a friend Wednesday, 23 March 2011 21:57

Punta Umbria. Linet Masai failed to break the duck in her third attempt at gold as a senior athlete at the World Cross Country championship in Punta Umbria, Spain.

But, at 21, she has a whole career in front of her – unlike the winner in senior women's race on Sunday, Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot.

The two will be separated in the track season, Masai going to defend her 10,000 metres title and Cheruiyot the 5,000m one at the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, in September.

Prior to Cheruiyot, Masai had suffered defeats to compatriots Florence Kiplagat in Amman, Jordan, in 2009 and Emily Chebet in Bydgoszcz, Poland, last year.

Reigning World 5,000m champion Cheruiyot, 27, won the World Junior Cross Country title in 2000 in Villamoura, Portugal, but had not placed higher than eighth in a World Cross competition.

Masai is the World 10,000m champion and won the World Junior Cross Country in Mombasa in 2007.

"I like running in warm conditions. I had beaten Masai in Seville in January and was certain to do well here," said Cheruiyot.

Cheruiyot's gold and Masai's silver were enough to secure Kenya 15 points, beating Ethiopia (29) and United States of America (57) to the team title.

"I have won everything now – save for that elusive Olympic medal. Well, that is a year from now," said Cheruiyot.

Masai and Cheruiyot pulled away after the first three laps. Cheruiyot, returning to cross country after four years, crossed the line in 24 minutes 58 seconds, ahead of Masai (25.07), USA's Shalane Flanagan (25.10) and Ethiopia's Meseltch Melkamu. Priscah Jepleting, Wude Ayalew (Ethiopia), Pauline Korikwiang, Lineth Chepkurui and Ethiopian Genzebe Dibada followed. Sylvia Kibet managed 13th place.

France rebels Evra, Ribery to start against Luxembourg Send to a friend Wednesday, 23 March 2011 21:54

Paris. Patrice Evra and Franck Ribery are both expected to feature from the start in France's Euro 2012 qualifier against Luxembourg.

Bayern Munich attacker Franck Ribery and Manchester United defender Patrice Evra are both expected to feature from the start when France take on Luxembourg in Friday's Euro 2012 qualifier, France Football reports.

Both players have been included in the France squad for the first time since last summer's disastrous World Cup campaign as national team coach Laurent Blanc seems to have forgiven the duo their behavior in South Africa.

Evra and Ribery were both part of the probable starting XI during a training session on Tuesday afternoon. The Manchester United full-back played in the place of the unavailable Eric Abidal, while Ribery featured in Mathieu Valbuena's spot as right winger.

Meanwhile, Bordeaux midfielder Alou Diarra will probably start the match against Luxembourg from the bench as Blanc seems set to prefer Yoann Gourcuff, Samir Nasri and Yann M'Vila in midfield on Friday evening.

Platini apita tena bila kupingwa Urais Uefa Send to a friend Wednesday, 23 March 2011 19:56

PARIS, Ufaransa

Torres not losing sleep over Blues goal drought Send to a friend Wednesday, 23 March 2011 21:50

Former Liverpool's striker Fernando Torres says he is not losing any sleep over his Chelsea goal drought.
The £50million Blues striker insisted: "I am not anxious about the fact that I haven't scored my first goal for the club.

"That is an issue for other people, not for me. I am confident that the goals will soon come but it is far more important for me that Chelsea win than I score."The Spaniard has failed to find the target in seven appearances since joining Carlo Ancelotti's side in a record British transfer deal from Liverpool on deadline day.

Torres is currently with the Spain squad preparing for Friday's Euro qualifier against the Czech Republic in Canada.Meanwhile, Guus Hiddink has put Chelsea on alert for a possible return to the club by admitting he is set to quit as Turkey boss.

The Blues had an approach to make the Dutchman director of football turned down back in November.

But Hiddink, who led Chelsea to FA Cup glory as caretaker chief in 2009, claims he will call time on the Turks if their fading Euro 2012 qualification hopes are ended in the next two matches against Austria and Belgium.
Hiddink said: "I'm trying to make a better Turkey team. If I can't do that, I'll ask the chairman to sack me."

Mourinho declares England return Send to a friend Wednesday, 23 March 2011 21:47

London. Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho last night confirmed he was coming home to the English Premier League. The Special One admitted: "I miss England and my next job will be in England. There is unfinished business. "And I think England wants me back, no? It was the most enjoyable time of my career."

The Real Madrid boss was speaking at the Football Extravaganza evening at London's Grosvenor Hotel. He described England as a special place to be a manager. Mourinho - who left Chelsea for Inter Milan in 2008 - made it clear he was planning a spectacular Premier League return- as SunSport exclusively revealed on March 12.

Chelsea is his most likely destination but both Manchester clubs and Spurs are on his radar. Mourinho, 48, said: "My Chelsea time was amazing as a football manager and family man. My family and I enjoyed it so much. We made so many friends here. We still keep in touch, we still come back.

"In football there are a few victories here I would like to repeat. I will talk to my agent and get a project for my career. "I still have three years at Real Madrid. It is the biggest club in the world but it is also the most difficult club in the world.

"They came to me for the third time and I could not say no to them for the third time - I had to go.
"And I had to go to Italy, that was important for me because I wanted to try there. Everyone said it was the home of tactics so I said let me try there.

"But it is not England, England is special. People in Italy, Spain and Portugal ask me why I love England so much and I can't explain - I just do. "I want to be happy in my work. I want to be happy with my football."

Mourinho aipa changamoto Spurs Send to a friend Wednesday, 23 March 2011 19:54

LONDON, Uingereza

SIMBA, SOFAPAKA MUST KEEP EA'S FLAG FLYING Send to a friend Saturday, 19 March 2011 13:23

simbalogo.jpg
Mainland champions Simba and Kenya's Sofapaka, the only East Africa teams still bidding for success in the CAF club competitions, swing back into action this weekend with plenty of work to do.

Sofapaka take on Egyptian giants Ismailia today in the Confederation Cup's second round return leg in Cairo, while Simba face two-time Africa Champions League winners TP Mazembe in the second round, first leg in Lubumbashi, DR Congo tomorrow.

After the other East African teams' ungraceful elimination in the club competitions, the East Africans' hopes for psychological reprieve now rest on the shoulders of the two teams.

Thus, while congratulating them for making it to this stage, it is only wise to warn them of the almost insurmountable task they now face. Simba qualified for the second round at the expense of Elan Club de Mistoudje, of Comoros, who they eliminated 4-2 on goal aggregate a month ago, while Sofapaka sailed through with a 5-4 win over Angola's Aviacao on penalties

However, while Elan Club de Mistoudje and Aviacao posed a rather modest opposition, the Mainland champions and Sofapaka will certainly find their next opponents – Mazembe and Ismailia- a different proposition.

The 2010 Fifa World Club finalists, TP Mazembe, and Ismailia are among the biggest names in the African soccer, and they seem to invincible in their home venues, if history and statistics are anything to go by.

But this is not a yardstick to predict the outcome of the two matches because statistics exist so that other teams can go there at contradict them. We are not foretellers, but we believe that if Simba and Sofapaka will be at their best, they will defy the odds and shine this weekend.

In 2003, for instance, Simba, against all predictions, caused the biggest upset ever, when they eliminated titleholders Zamalek on penalties in Cairo, to book a place in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.
Hopefully, they will repeat that memorable feat this time around. They should start by overcoming the first hurdle in tomorrow's clash. All the best!

Walionusurika ajalini wasimulia kilichowaponza Five Star Send to a friend Wednesday, 23 March 2011 20:15

Vicky Kimaro

Jose Mourinho expects Cristiano Ronaldo to be fit for Real Madrid's Champions League quarter-final first-leg clash with Tottenham next month.

Ronaldo suffered a hamstring injury in the 2-1 derby win over Atletico Madrid last Saturday and was initially expected to be out for two to three weeks.
The world's most expensive player will certainly miss Portugal's two friendlies against Chile and Finland, but Mourinho believes Ronaldo will be back for the Tottenham game at the Bernabeu on April 5.
"I think he will be able to play against Tottenham. We don't have a game this weekend and that will allow him to recover," Mourinho is quoted as saying in As.
"I don't think he can play against Sporting Gijon (in the league), if he can, I won't risk it because I want him fit for the Champions League match.
"We hope he is back to his top level against Tottenham."
Ronaldo admits he was not 100 per cent fit in the Champions League second leg against Lyon or for the derby against Atletico and wants to get back to his best.
"I am physically restricted and I want to recover 100 per cent," said Ronaldo. "I don't want to play in a restricted way like I did against Lyon and Atletico Madrid.
"I would have liked to have played the two friendlies with Portugal but it is not possible."

He'll be back for the CL game for sure and I feel Real would beat them even if he didn't make it to the 1st game. Come on Higuain!(FCB fan)

At Mourinho's misquoted press conference today referenced in the other story, he said Higuain is making progress, playing 60 minute games against Castilla, the B team, while everyone else is away on international duty, and is not far from being in a match.

Spurs have some talented players but they're not a great team by any stretch. You can bet your house on a Barca-Real CL semi!

Yeah, CR is extremely talented, but I'm not sure if I care or not if he plays against us. I trust our squad and we will play just as hard either way. Let's go Spurs.

Huddlestone coming back will be key. He can spray the ball 80 yards accurately with either foot at a standstill. We have failed to get Bale involved lately in his absence.

gotta love the spurs story if they knock out another huge club and face barca in next round but, the chance of 4 classicos with the 2 semis a league match and kings cup final between barca and madrid all falling in the same month (i think) would be insane!! so rest ronaldo forsure and tell alonso and ramos to take straight reds inside 5 mins for spain matches so they can be fit too

I gotta support Mourinho on this one. Going from 10 points to five behind our biggest rival in 3 separate competitions? Yeah, CR, you stay right here where I can see you. Ahem:

Mourinho: "Ozil, tell Ronaldo to get over here for training!"

Ozil: "Um...Cristiano was in an accident...he's dead..."

Mourinho: "Yeah, I didn't ask how he was FEELING, I said get him here!!"

The boy is an insanely talented goal-scorer and it'll be whatever it takes to play him...

Typically Jose doesn't want his best players to get hurt on International duty, but hey, lets give him the benefit of the doubt. I hope he is fit and plays a full 90min versus the Spurs.

I honestly think this will be a great match and I can't wait! If the Spurs can stop Ronaldo in the first half, he typically gets too frustrated and then collapses for the rest of the game.

Rafael van der Vaart has admitted Real Madrid was the draw he wanted after they were paired with Tottenham in the Champions League.

The Dutch midfielder endured a difficult two years in the Spanish capital with Real where he never managed to display the full range of his captivating talents.
However, at White Hart Lane, the former Ajax starlet has been an instant hit since joining the club on deadline day in August.
Tottenham now travel to Madrid to play the first leg of their quarter-final on 5th April and Van der Vaart is promising his team-mates they will have an experience of a lifetime.
"I was happy when the draw was made," he told the club's official website.
"I had hoped this would happen because it will be fantastic to go back to Madrid.
"I have a lot of friends there and it will be great to see them all. It's a big game, first leg away which is good for us, so I'm happy.
"For me, it's the biggest club in the world. Of course Barcelona are the best team in the world at this moment, but you can feel the history and how big the club is when you arrive at the stadium.
"The Bernabeu is fantastic. It's a great pitch, the stadium holds 90,000 and it's a fantastic feeling to play there. I played there for two years and had a great time there, so it's a dream to be going back."
This is Tottenham's maiden campaign in the Champions League and their progress in the competition this year has raised their profile throughout Europe.
However, for the nine-time winners Real Madrid, success is expected. Jose Mourinho may have won the competition with Porto and Inter, but at Madrid it is expected, in fact demanded.
This is a factor Van der Vaart believes could work in Tottenham's favour.
He added: "We don't have pressure, we can play our game and we have a chance I'm sure."
