Photograph: Ian Walton/Getty Images Gareth Bale has signed a new four-and-a-half year contract to remain at Tottenham. The 21-year-old winger has earned admirers across Europe this season after some outstanding displays in the Champions League, highlighted by his hat-trick against Inter at San Siro.
"It's great to have Gareth sign a new contract at the club," the Tottenham manager, Harry Redknapp, said. "He is a fantastic player and the type of player we need to be keeping at Spurs.
"Gareth is now one of the top left-sided players in the world. He really is an amazing talent and can only get better. He is a smashing lad as well, which is equally as important."
Bale's achievements have led to interest from a host of clubs but Redknapp has been adamant he is not for sale – a position strengthened by the new deal. "He has got his whole future ahead and he has everything going for him," Redknapp said.
The Wales international joined Spurs from Southampton at the age of 17, and has since made 112 appearances, scoring 17 goals. Most of those have come since he moved forward from his original left-back position to play on the wing, a switch that rejuvenated a career that at one stage appeared stalled as he struggled for a place in the side.
But the days when he was perhaps best known for setting a record of playing in 24 Premier League games for Tottenham without once being on the winning side are now forgotten.
"I am enjoying my football at Tottenham. I want us to keep going forward as a team and hopefully we can achieve big things," Bale said. "We have got a great squad that is still young and we are going places. It is great to commit to this club and hopefully we can achieve what we believe we can with this squad. The players want what the fans want, and performing in front of these fans is a special experience.
"I definitely believe we can challenge for a title very soon. That is why I have signed. Every year as a minimum we are aiming to qualify for the Champions League, so we are definitely going in the right direction.
"We have proven in the Champions League this season that we can compete with the best and we are in the last eight now, and there is no reason we can't go further this season and in years to come."

A first-half strike from Matt Jarvis earned Wolves a 1-0 victory at fellow strugglers Aston Villa to heap more misery on boss Gerard Houllier.
Jarvis' fifth goal of the season earned Wolves a first win over their derby rivals in 31 years and took them to just a point behind Villa.

Villa fans chanted 'We want Houllier out' at the final whistle and greeted his walk to the tunnel with loud boos.
Houllier had incurred the wrath of some Villa fans recently when he fielded a much-changed side for the FA Cup clash at Manchester City.
Then this week the former Liverpool boss has had to deal with the fall-out from the Richard Dunne-James Collins bust-up with coaching staff at a team bonding session.
But this defeat will have hurt the Frenchman as it has sucked Villa right into the heart of a survival battle.
They have taken only five points from the last six games.
It was only Wolves' second away victory of the campaign but Mick McCarthy's side are now unbeaten in four games.
Before kick-off a banner was unfurled on the Holte End with the message 'Had enough, Houllier out' but it was quickly taken down by a steward.
Wolves made a positive start and went close to taking the lead after two minutes.
Winger Adam Hammill got past Villa left-back Nathan Baker and squared the ball back to Nenad Milijas whose low 20-yard shot was turned aside by Brad Friedel.
The visitors were looking full of confidence and Kevin Doyle had a low drive blocked by Kyle Walker.
Friedel then went down at the foot of his post to keep out a Hammill effort, with Jarvis in a good position in the middle.
Play was flowing from end to end and fit-again Villa defender Carlos Cuellar headed over from an Ashley Young corner.
Wolves defender Christophe Berra headed in a Hammill centre after 21 minutes, but the effort was ruled out for offside by referee Phil Dowd.
Doyle also had the ball in the net after half an hour with a far-post header, but the cross from Hammill had drifted out of play.
Wolves defender Richard Stearman was yellow-carded after 31 minutes for a foul on Young.
Houllier made a change after 33 minutes with Baker, who was showing no visible signs of carrying an injury, replaced by Fabian Delph at left-back.
Berra left the pitch, presumably for some treatment, but returned to play a part in Wolves taking the lead after 38 minutes.
Milijas delivered the cross from the right, Berra flicked the ball on to Jarvis whose first-time shot from 15 yards flew past Friedel into the corner of the net via a post.
It was Jarvis' fifth goal of the campaign and fourth in the Premier League.
Jean Makoun should have put Villa level on the stroke of half-time.
The former Lyon player was completely unmarked but headed Stewart Downing's centre wide.

Villa started the second half with positive intent and were awarded a free-kick in a dangerous position right on the edge of the Wolves box after Stearman brought down Bent.
Television replays suggested the offence had taken place inside the penalty area.
Bent's eventual shot was deflected for a corner after Young had rolled the free-kick into his path.
Stearman made a vital block on a fiercely-struck Downing volley before Houllier made a double change after 61 minutes.
He brought on Robert Pires and Gabriel Agbonlahor in place of Reo-Coker and Albrighton.
But the substitution of Albrighton was greeted with loud boos from Villa fans and cries of 'You don't know what you're doing' towards Houllier.
McCarthy replaced Hammill with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake three minutes later.
Friedel beat out a dipping 25-yard drive from Milijas after Villa were guilty of giving the ball away in midfield.
Young was trying his best to bring Villa back into the game and the woodwork came to Wolves' rescue after 80 minutes when his shot crashed against the crossbar.
George Elokobi was then booked for chopping down Downing.
Cuellar volleyed over after Pires had knocked the ball down into his path, but Villa could not find an equaliser.

Junior Hoilett's injury-time header earned Blackburn a vital 2-2 draw in a breathless Premier League clash with fellow strugglers Blackpool.
The visitors were in total control at half-time after captain Charlie Adam, back from a two-game ban, had netted a contentious 25th-minute penalty and curled in a sublime free-kick four minutes later.

But Christopher Samba pulled a goal back for Blackburn four minutes into the second half and their incessant pressure finally paid off when Richard Kingson failed to get hands to a free-kick from opposite number Paul Robinson and Hoilett headed in.
The result keeps both sides a point above the relegation zone, but Blackpool will know this was a great chance to take a giant step towards safety.
There was no sign of what was to come in the opening stages as Blackburn dominated proceedings against an unusually timid Blackpool.
Jermaine Jones saw an acrobatic effort deflected over while Steven Nzonzi headed just wide from eight yards after Kingson had flapped at a corner.
Having offered next to nothing going forwards, Blackpool thought they had taken the lead in the 20th minute when Adam's free-kick was turned in by Luke Varney, but he was correctly, if belatedly, flagged offside.
The visitors then had a let-off when Hoilett's cross just failed to pick out an unmarked Mame Biram Diouf, but in the 25th minute Blackpool did take the lead from the penalty spot.
Jason Puncheon broke through from midfield before playing in Gary Taylor-Fletcher, who appeared to get his shot away before he was caught by Ryan Nelsen, back in the Rovers team after a one-match suspension.
Blackburn, who had lost out to a dubious penalty at Fulham last time out, were furious with referee Howard Webb but it was to no avail as Adam coolly rolled his shot into the bottom corner.
The massed ranks of Blackpool fans who had made the short trip across Lancashire were ecstatic, and they were celebrating again four minutes later when Adam doubled the lead.
There was no luck involved this time as, after he had been fouled 25 yards out by Jones, the midfielder picked himself up to curl a precise shot into the top corner.
In the closing moments of the half Varney had the ball in the net again after following up a shot from Puncheon that was parried by Paul Robinson, but this time the midfielder knew the offside flag was coming.
What Blackburn needed was good start to the second half, and they should have pulled a goal back in the opening seconds when the lively Hoilett worked his way into the area on the left and picked out Nzonzi, who fired into the side netting from 12 yards.

The home fans did not have to wait long, though, as a spell of pinball in the Blackpool box in the 49th minute ended with captain Samba sending a low shot into the bottom corner.
Kingson failed to hold a cross and, after Hoilett and Diouf had both seen shots blocked, Samba kept his head to beat the keeper from 20 yards.
A rare foray forward from Blackpool ended with Puncheon forcing a decent save from Robinson but the visitors' defending was becoming increasingly desperate and Martin Olsson slammed a shot against the post.
Teenage Blackburn defender Phil Jones, out since December with a knee injury, was thrown into the action for Emerton in the 59th minute.
Blackpool were enjoying more possession now but they were still walking a tightrope and Samba came agonisingly close to levelling matters in the 76th minute with a header that was cleared off the line by Stephen Crainey.
The centre-back then saw his follow-up attempt deflect wide off Rovers substitute Jason Roberts, who moments later hooked a shot against the outside of the post.
The hosts continued to pour forward, with Samba and Hoilett both sending efforts wide, and in the third minute of injury time they finally got the equaliser they craved.
Kingson could not get hands to a long free-kick from Robinson and Hoilett headed over keeper and defence to secure a priceless point for the hosts.
