Yanga looking for new sponsor

By DAILY NEWS Reporter, 2nd March 2011 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 277

WITH only a month left before the three-year contract between the Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) and soccer giants Simba and Yanga runs out, the latter have started searching for a new sponsor.

Yanga Chairman Lloyd Nchunga revealed this on Wednesday, adding that the club also needed to expand its sources of income. Nchunga said they need a total of 1.2bn/- per year and are currently assured of getting 212.2m/- from the current TBL deal.

He mentioned the club's financial requirements for this year as 600m/- for registration of players, 32m/- for players' monthly salaries and 10m/- for the rest of the club employees' salaries.

He said they also need eight million shillings each month for paying electricity and water bills, apart from fulfilling other official requirements including drinking water for the team during training sessions and matches.

The club, Nchunga said, will open a special bank account and raise funds that will help them run various activities smoothly. Nchunga said they are also planning to set up business ventures with a view to establishing stable sources of income that will in turn alleviate dependency.

He also said the executive committee meeting held early this week has decided to take measures against ‘troublesome' members, who are purported to be instigating misunderstanding within the club.

"We will hold a meeting between May and June after the completion of the premier league and the club's financial report and come out with decisions on all matters that arose recently," he added.

The club's Vice-Chairman Davis Mosha requested all members who are keen on fuelling chaos to stop the habit, saying "it does not serve any purpose.

Stand-up comedy goes big in Dar es Salaam

By ORTON KIISHWEKO, 2nd March 2011 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 208

WHEN it comes to stand up comedy, it should be admitted that Evance Bukuku and his group and Dar es Salaam may apparently be winning it.

Before a full ‘Sweet Easy' restaurant house in Dar es salaam on Tuesday night, it was not expected by many a skeptic that this Stand-up Comedian and his group, currently shooting sessions with M-net, would sustain a one and half hour house laughing audience.

Their well attended ‘cheka night' show may go far in crediting them as one of the pioneers of local comedy who have played a big role in revolutionising local laughter industry.

Comedian Bukuku sang a very funny and interesting imitation of Bruno Mars' song, ‘I Wanna Be A Millionaire', which he named ‘I wanna be a fisadi', sharing the same chorus lyrics but different Swahili lyrics in the main part.

As the audience fell into fits of laughter, Bukuku recited a fast-paced succession of humorous stories, short jokes and one-liners, making everyone laugh as if under the influence of a laughing gas, until he finished his 10 acts session.

His 10 acts of aunthentic local subjects sounded as funny and original, making fun of the political and social goofs people make in everyday lives.

Judging from the pool of the crowd,it was great wonder earlier on how the night's stand up comedians would be able to crack jokes to give this multi-racial crowd a laughter in equal measure.

Atugenile Bukuku who is also the musician popularly known as Enica, did her rendition of an opera like short show titled ‘Tanesco'. She personalized the public power utility telling us how much Tanesco can do in spoiling our schedules though power outages.

It was the Master of Ceremonies, Taji Liundu who said that while her brief show impressed the audience, it was also her while outfir and accessories that beat it all.

Comedians Dogo Pepe and Falii Mapupa, also part of the company called ‘Vuvuzela' and one of five yentas on the night's show, were fine, as they seemed to come easily with their jokes that satirized society's fears and trials at individual level.

Speaking to Bukuku shortly after the performance, he said comedy is a strong tool that can be used to face day-to-day challenges.

"Comedy is a good distraction from difficult issues and a strong motivational tool. Comedy is a very mental thing but it can have a soothing effect on the whole body because laughter is best medicine anyway," he said.

His take here was befitting of the fun and lessons they drew from the recent Gongo la Mboto bomb blasts at this two hour show whose entrance fee went for 10,000/-.

And being a media person, it was easy to notice in audience Co-operate Bank Executives, corporates from the Telecoms, young laywers, academicians, literary researchers, creative artistes, promotional brains, among other passionate people in the audience.

Promoted netball teams receive cash awards

By NELLY MTEMA, 2nd March 2011 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 85

TANZANIA Amateur Netball Association (CHANETA) Vice-Chairperson, Shyrose Bhanji has dished out 1.1m/- to four teams which were promoted to first division recently.

Bhanji presented the cash prizes to Mbeya's Hamambe, Police Arusha, Coast and Ruvu JKT at a brief ceremony held in the city yesterday.

During the league played at the Jamhuri Stadium in Morogoro, Mbeya's Hamambe finished overall winners thus earning 500,000/-, Police Arusha 300,000/-, Police Coast 200,000/- and Ruvu JKT 100,000/-.

Shyrose said the money was meant to boost the quartet after recording impressive results in the just ended second division netball league, as well as posing a challenge to other teams in the lower divisions to strive for excellence.

Eleven teams took part in the eight-day event, which means that seven remained in the second division league, namely; Lindi's Ruangwa and Tupendane, Mtwara's Tandahimba, Tigo of Dar es Salaam, Mzinga of Morogoro and Black Sisters from Coast region.

She challenged the promoted outfits to prepare well for the first division league slated for Arusha in August, this year.

"Training and discipline is key for any team's success, therefore you have to train if you want to remain on top and those teams which have not been promoted shouldn't give up, you must prepare for future events," she issued an uplifting message.

Mbaga to officiate derby match

By JAPHETH KAZENGA, 2nd March 2011 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 108

FIFA-badged referee Oden Mbaga will officiate in the Saturday's mouthwatering Premier League clash between rivals Simba and Young Africans at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) has revealed.

The federation's Information Officer Boniface Wambura said on Wednesday Mbaga will be assisted by Mohamed Mkono from Tanga and Maxmillian Nkongolo from Rukwa.

The match's fourth official will be Hashim Abdallah of Dar es Salaam as reverend Army Sentimea, also of Dar es Salaam, will be the match commissar.

Mbaga has of late turned into one of the most respected local football referees after successfully supervising several high profile matches both in and outside the country.

His memorable exploits with the whistle were in full view during an international friendly match pitting national soccer team, Taifa Stars, against visiting New Zealand at the National Stadium in June, 2009 in which Stars won 2-1.

He also officiated in another international friendly tie between Stars and Palestine at the same venue earlier last month, with the hosts grabbing a slim 1-0 win.

Mbaga, besides, is among four local referees who have been appointed by FIFA to officiate in the Olympic Games' qualifier between Algeria and Madagascar scheduled for next month.

Meanwhile, TFF has announced the entrance fees for the archrivals' match in which the highest will be 30,000/- while the lowest is 3,000/-.

He said fans wishing to watch the match from the 748-seat VIP A stand will have to cough 30,000/- each, the 4,160-seat VIP B stand will cost 20,000/- for each seat while the VIP C's favourites, whose place has 4,060 seats, will pay 10,000/- each.

"Fans that will prefer the 11,897-seat orange stand will pay 7,000/- each as the blue and green seats, which total 17,045 and 19,648 respectively, will cost 5,000/- and 3,000/- each respectively," said Wambura.

He said the match's tickets will go on sale from Friday morning at various centres in the city including the Benjamin Mkapa Secondary School, Big Bon Msimbazi, Steers restaurant at Samora/Ohio Street and the Uhuru Stadium.

"The tickets will also be sold on Saturday from 8am to 12pm at the mentioned centres and will then be available at the Uhuru Stadium only thereafter," he added.

Wambura also reminded local soccer fans who will attend the match that they should behave well to avoid costly destruction that could otherwise be created on the stadium.

His call comes in the wake of seemingly persistent unruly behaviours by a section of the fans that normally damage seats at the stadium, apart from dirtying the toilets.

He insisted that the local media has a duty to educate the public on the necessity for proper use of the stadium facilities, with a view to assisting smooth maintenance of the state-of-the-art venue.

Meanwhile, Wambura said the federation was looking into the possibility of allotting a new space for the media in the stadium, with the aim of giving the latter more freedom to perform their duties.

"We have already proposed options for new space for the media in the stadium and the move will be put into effect during the 2012 African Nations Cup Qualifier between Taifa Stars and the Central African Republic (CAR) later this month," he said.

Rage aachia ngazi Tarefa

Hall's Azam stopped

By DAILY NEWS Reporter, 2nd March 2011 @ 11:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 320

AZAM FC's five-match winning run was brought to an end after being held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Majimaji in closely contested Premier League match at the Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday.

Needing victory to move top of the table, Azam, led at halftime through Mrisho Ngasa's spot kick. But Evarist Maganga drew the parity two minutes into the second half and that is how it stayed by the time referee Judith Gamba blew the final whistle.

The results means that Azam, who are chasing their first league title, remain third on the standings with 36 points, after 18 games, two points behind leaders Yanga and one adrift of second-placed Simba.

It was not the best results for relegation-haunted Majimaji too, as the solitary point earned could not lift them out of the danger zone. With four games to go the 1980s top flight winners lie second bottom with 12 points, three points off the safety line.

In the previous three rounds, Premier League leadership has changed hands thrice between top three sides --Yanga, Simba and Azam. The latter had succeeded to move above Simba and Yanga to the top of the table with a 2-0 win over JKT Ruvu on February 20.

They only stayed on top for one week, as holders Simba provisionally took control of the title race last Sunday with a 4-1 demolition of Mtibwa Sugar.

The driver's seat then returned back to Young Africans the following day after the Jangwani Street side had posted a hard fought 1-0 win over Ruvu Shooting 1-0 on Monday.

Azam came into the match looking for three points that could have taken them back to the top and put more pressure to routine winners Yanga and Simba. But most importantly remain serious contenders for the title as the league edges closer to the finishing line.

On the other hand, Majimaji, marched into the historic Uhuru venue determined to fight for the maximum points that could have revived their hopes to stay in the top flight league next season. Azam kicked off stoutly and took first initiative on goal but John Bocco was denied by the woodwork after six minutes.

The towering striker snatched Paul Ngalema's back pass before unleashing a power-packed drive that struck against the post. And it looked like it was going to be six out of six for the big spenders, when wing wizard Ngasa expertly buried the penalty in the 18th minute.

The penalty was awarded to Azam after Majimaji goalkeeper Said Mohamed had brought down Ramadhani Chombo just inside the area.

But the visitors fought bravely and marched their opponents for most part of the first half, with both teams creating but wasting several scoring opportunities. The first half closed with Azam leading by a goal to nil.

Majimaji, tutored by former star Peter Mhina, started the second half strongly and managed to level the matters after Maganga, slotted home the equalizer on 47 minute, following Ulimboka Mwakingwe's corner kick and went on to hold for a point.
