Phiri alisema amekiandaa kikosi chake kikamilifu, hivyo anaamini vijana wake hawatamuangusha, kwani tayari amerekebisha makosa yaliyojitokeza hivi karibuni, hivyo kazi imebaki ndani ya dimba.

Simba,Yanga clash in potential title decider

By ABDALLAH MSUYA, 4th March 2011 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 111

PREMIER League arch-rivals Simba and Young Africans face off on Saturday afternoon in a mouth-watering top of the table clash that could well turn out to be the title-decider.

The decisive clash is between two of the Mainland's leading lights – One team is a reigning champion and is yearning to make it second in a row, while the other vies to reclaim the trophy they relinquished last season.

A continental audience of over 32 African countries would watch live the eagerly awaited duel at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, as South African pay television ‘DStv SuperSport' in association with Star TV will be beaming it live from the 60,000-seater stadium.

For the past few days, the two local giants, whose rivalry is as old as the Tanzanian football itself, have arduously been gunning up for this crunch clash, with its winner expected to go all the way to lift the league glory this season.

As it stands, Yanga, the top flight record winners with over 20 titles, lead the 12-team table with 38 points from 17 outings, whereas second-placed Simba are breathing on their neck on 37 points and have one game in hand.

The two teams last clashed during the Mapinduzi Cup final, with Simba triumphed 2-0 at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar to lift the trophy. Yanga In its last two games, Yanga has re-established itself as a serious title contender after the exit from CAF Confederation Cup.

The dug out a 1-0 win over Kagera Sugar and Ruvu Shooting respectively, only to find themselves at the summit ahead of this potential title-decider.

Keeping the ball will be the key for Sam Timbe's men as they were guilty of losing the ball too often on Monday against Ruvu Shooting. A good start to the game will be crucial against an in-form Simba team.

First round's fixture was a thrilling encounter with Yanga prevailing and if they manage to defeat their nemesis on Saturday, it would be a ‘statement of purpose' of monumental proportions. Yanga will miss the service of Ghanaian midfielder Ernest Boakye who has been dropped from the squad for unspecified reasons.

However, the yellow-green sporting team has received a huge boost after midfield duo Godfrey Boniface and Nurdin Bakari beat off minor injuries they sustained against Ruvu Shooting.

Simba The team from Msimbazi Street has been in good form since losing 3-2 to Azam in the second phase's opening match and boasts the most formidable squad in the elite league at the moment.

The absence of injured Joseph Owino, Hilary Echesa and Mohamed Banka is definitely a big blow, but with the title potentially up for grabs with the outcome of this game, the holders will give it everything to emerge victors.

Phiri will look upon Kelvin Yondan and Juma Nyoso, the team's non-compromising central defenders to keep a check on Jerryson Tegete, the scorer of the lone goal that downed Simba at the CCM Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza on October 16, last year.

Tegete has so far scored five goals against Simba. Keeping him quiet could determine the result of the game. But Simba should also keep a close eye on Zambian striker Davis Mwape and youthful Idd Mbaga.

Offensively, Simba's hopes rest on sensational young striker Mbwana Samata, Musa Hassan ‘Mgosi', Shija Mkina and returning Emmanuel Okwi. They have the most gifted striking force in the league.

Samata, in particular has been in exceptional form, scoring six goals in five league games, plus two African Champions League strikes.

After notching his first hat-trick in top flight football in a 4-0 demolition of Mtibwa Sugar last Sunday, the former African Lyon ace will get a chance to prove his class and importance.

Meanwhile, after missing out on his team's entire second round matches, Ugandan attacker Okwi is set to make his return.

Simba will be banking on him to inspire them past Yanga. With five and six games remaining for Yanga and Simba respectively, it is obvious that both sides would approach today's match like a final, knowing this is the biggest of them all in the run to the league glory.

On the whole, this match is a mouth-watering fixture with the two genuine contenders going head-to-head for the title while Azam FC– still very much in the race – would be hoping for a draw.

By DAILY NEWS Reporter, 4th March 2011 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 48

JAY Somani has unanimously been re-elected snooker captain during the section's polls at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC) on Thursday.

He vowed to take the game to the highest level. Speaking to the ‘Daily News' in Dar es Salaam on Friday after the Thursday election Somani said his new-look team will start with improvement of the Dar Open tournament to be staged later this year.

"I have already talked to the event sponsor Cargo Stars Ltd Managing Director Dioniz Malinzi who was there to observe our election and he promised us support as he wants the next Dar Open to be an extraordinary one," the snooker captain said.

Somani said his newly elected committee would work towards promoting the sport, stating that they are ready to confront the challenges ahead.

Somani thanked his voters for showing good faith in him and promised them to complete all the developmental projects and programmes he had initiated during his first two terms.

"I made promise to initiate a number of programmes to improve the standard of the sport. I would make sure the projects are accomplished in this term.

Tenga vows to promote EA soccer

By JAPHET KAZENGA, 4th March 2011 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 51

THE Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) President Leodegar Tenga has promised to fight for the rights of the East African region when he takes his new post of executive committee member of the continental soccer governing body, CAF.

Tenga, who is also the chairman of the Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA), said the new post puts him in a better position to champion for the development of the region's soccer standard and he will do his utmost to realize the plan.

He beat Rwanda's Celestine Musabyimana to the post of the CAF executive committee member for the Central-East Zone during the body's 33rd Ordinary General Assembly held in Khartoum, Sudan last month.

"My main motive behind contesting for the post was the need to represent our zone in CAF. When we (East African football officials) talked to our counterparts from the rest of the continent, we discovered that their top officials are in the CAF executive committee thus we felt it was better our region had a representative too," said Tenga.

"One of the most important tasks ahead is the improvement of the East African soccer body, CECAFA. We also need to foster better relationship with our fellows from North, South and West to ensure we meet our targets," he added.

Tenga said problems facing the East African region's soccer hardly differ from the ones found in the rest of the continent and, for that matter; the way out of the problems rests on the need for CECAFA members to devise better strategies to improve regional soccer.

"The biggest problem in the East African region's soccer is lack of investment in youth. We have to boost the level of investment in the mentioned field, apart from encouraging better cooperation with the rest of the zones' soccer governing bodies in the continent and exchange ideas, a move that could prove useful to us," he said.

"Some of our fellow African countries have made great strides in soccer because they have plenty of professional players in top flight leagues in Europe but, in fact, they do encounter the same problems we have in their respective domestic soccer," he added.

He thanked TFF, domestic soccer stakeholders and the rest of the CECAFA members saying their unwavering support helped him win the CAF executive committee membership.

"TFF, as a matter of fact, proposed my name during the CAF polls, so, I thank the former for promoting my leadership qualities and eventually help me win the new post," he said.

He further hinted that he is planning to contest for the second term in November this year and step down thereafter so that other football officials in the East African region could as well contest for the position. "I have no plan whatsoever to cling to the position.

I believe our region has plenty of officials with the ability to successfully represent us in CAF therefore, I have planned to contest for the second term in November and step down thereafter," said Tenga.

SIMBA's Ugandan professional trio of Emmanuel Okwi, Joseph Owino and Patrick Ochan have been recalled to the Cranes squad, which is preparing for the African Nations Cup qualifier against Guinea Bissau scheduled for March 26.

They are part of the 23- man squad announced by the country's soccer governing body, FUFA, and they are set to team up with a host of other foreign professionals and a few home-based players.

All three have had occasional stints with the Cranes and their latest assignment was the Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) Tusker Challenge Cup held in Dar es Salaam last year in which Cranes finished third.

They were then left out of the squad that participated in the inaugural Nile Basin soccer championship hosted by Egypt with the youthful Cranes storming to the final only to lose to the hosts.

Owino, on his part, looked to have earned a surprise inclusion into the squad as he was sidelined for the better part of the Mainland Premier League's second phase after sustaining a series of injuries.

According to the Ugandan daily, New Vision, FUFA has also recalled Joseph Kabagambe for national duty with the Cranes. The winger, a member of Sudanese club Al- Neel, is in the 23-man squad summoned for training ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Guinea Bissau on March 26.

Kabagambe replaces fastpaced midfielder Dan Wagaluka, who has been ignored. Steven Bengo was the other prominent exclusion. The squad comprising five home-based and foreignbased players includes USbased defender Henry Kalungi.

The defender, who plays for Richmond Football Club, is an alternative to doubtful Cranes captain Ibrahim Sekagya. Cranes coach Bobby Williamson said that: "We have not dropped any player. It will be a waste of time for us to call players and end up not using them."

Goalkeeper Posnet Omony, who plays for South African side Vasco Da Gama, has also been recalled to the team. Omony last played for Uganda during Cranes' 2-1 win over Benin in 2009.

Cranes squad: D. Onyango, P. Omony, N. Kizito, I. Sekagya, A. Mwesigwa, M. Mudde,
I. Isinde, V. Kayizzi, T. Mawejje, G. Massa, D. Obua, E. Okwi, P. Ochan, G. Sserunkuma, B. Umony, O.Kasule J. Owino, J. Kabagambe, G. Walusimbi, S. Masaba, M. Mutyaba, H. Muwonge, H. Kalungi and H. Wasswa.

Samatta msimu uliopita alikuwa African Lyon.

SIX aspiring models had their dreams to represent Tanzania in international fashion scenes quashed after they were dropped from the list of contestants for the forthcoming ‘Face of Tanzania' finals.

Organizer of the annual modelling competition, Juliana Urio of Beautiful Tanzanie Agency (BTA), said the girls have to go out of the finals after they were voted out by the viewers through televised programme meant to select the finalists.

Those voted out are Angel Mombeki and Monica Fikiri (Tabora), Asha Hamis and Diana Moshi (Dodoma), Winfrida Sabega (Dar es Salaam) and Dotinata Soro (Arusha).

The sextet were among twenty five girls who had sailed through the modelling competition dubbed ‘Kisura wa Tanzania' preliminaries after making it past a two-month scouting in 12 Mainland regions that had involved 1,000 aspirants.

"It has been our tradition to give room for our fans to suggest who they think should win the title through voting and the six have been voted out," said Urio.

She said the voting will also be conducted this weekend and it is expected to be a tough one going by the quality of this year's contestants. Urio said the top prizes will be made public on Sunday as well as the venue for the finals.

The contestants are currently in residential training camp at Kiromo Hotel in Bagamoyo. The finals of the modelling competition are scheduled to take place on March 18, in Dar es Salaam.

Darts body to review its constitution

By JAPHETH KAZENGA, 3rd March 2011 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 62

THE Tanzania Amateur Darts Association (TADA) is expected to submit its draft constitution to the National Sports Council (NSC) in a bid to officially start ushering in a legally elected leadership.

TADA Acting Assistant Secretary General Kale Mgonja said they were scheduled to submit the draft constitution mid this week and wait for the NSC approval before dealing with other procedures.

The association is currently under an interim leadership that came to power on January 9, 2009 and has since then been taking charge of all matters pertaining to effective promotion of darts in the country.

Mgonja said the association held its general assembly during this year's national darts championship played in Dodoma last weekend in which members reviewed and approved the draft constitution.

"The TADA general assembly was held successfully and the review of the draft constitution is over," he said.

"All members came to an agreement on the matter and the remaining task is the presentation of the draft constitution to the NSC so that the latter can approve it and set date for our association's elections," added Mgonja.

He insisted that the TADA interim leadership was determined to complete the task within one week after the end of the national championship to ensure the whole process runs appropriately within the scheduled time.

The election of new TADA officials will mark yet another significant attempt by the domestic darts stakeholders to revive the sport and help it regain its reputation as the most respected indoor sport in the country.

Mgonja hinted shortly before the Dodoma tournament that the TADA interim leadership was fast tracking the approval of the draft constitution with a view to securing legally elected officials, a move that will help the sport secure reliable sponsorship.

"We would like to get sponsorship and propel darts to enormous success domestically. We hope the success will be achieved through better cooperation with domestic sports stakeholders, including the media," he said.

"What we need is the legally elected leadership…the current interim officials are not necessarily the ones that should be voted to power," he added.

With Tanzania scheduled to host this year's East Africa Darts Challenge Cup later next month, the acquisition of new TADA officials seems to be the biggest issue on focus as domestic darts followers seek to make their presence felt in sporting circles.

Africa to watch ‘giants' duel

By DAILY NEWS Reporter, 3rd March 2011 @ 12:00, Total Comments: 0, Hits: 292

A CONTINENTAL audience of over 32 African countries would watch live the top of the table Premier League clash between traditional archrivals, Simba and Young Africans due at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Saturday.

Defending champions Simba and league leaders Yanga will get to stake a claim for the inclusion of the celebrated local derby in the top five greatest African derbies in front of a continental audience as South African pay television ‘DStv SuperSport' in association with Star TV broadcasts the match live from the 60 000-seater stadium.

And in what would likely promote local talent across the continent, SuperSport confirmed on its website that over 32 African states will tune in to watch the potential Vodacom Premier League title decider.

"This match is truly one of the great derbies in African football and we are grateful to have the opportunity to share this fantastic match with football fans across the continent. A match like this deserves an international stage," SuperSport's head of Africa, Gary Rathbone said.

Mwanza-based Star TV, who hold the top flight broadcast rights and the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) have agreed to let DStv SuperSport broadcast the epic encounter between the country's most successful clubs to a larger continental audience.

"The match is live on SuperSport 9 at 2.55pm (CAT) from the 60 000-seater Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium, a venue both teams call home, something unique to only the Dar es Salaam and Milan derbies," read the statement.

The two local giants whose rivalry is as old as the Tanzanian football itself are arduously gunning up for the crunch clash, with its winner tipped to go all the way to lift the league glory this season.

As it stands, Yanga, record winners with a total of 21 titles, command the 12-team table with 38 points out of 17 outings, one point and one game more over second-placed Simba. As customary both teams have opted to set up their camp outside the city as they gear up for the eagerly awaited showdown.

Yanga, under the tutelage of Ugandan tactician Sam Timbe, have shifted their base to the coastal city of Bagamoyo, while title holders Simba have crossed the ocean to the spicy Island, where the two sides met last with Patrick Phiri's men triumphing 2-0 to scoop the 2011 Mapinduzi Cup.

Meanwhile, Simba have suffered another blow ahead of the showdown after industrious midfielder Mohamed Banka was ruled out on Thursday, the club said.

Simba physician Cosmas Kapinga informed the ‘Daily News' over the phone from the team's Zanzibar camp that the former Yanga player has contracted typhoid fever and would not take part in the derby.

Banka's injury could not have come at a worse time for the Msimbazi Street team as they are already without influential Kenyan midfielder Hilary Echesa and reliable centre back Joseph Owino. Owino was sent for an x-ray examination on Tuesday to see whether he could play or not, but the results showed that he is not fit, said Dr Kapinga.

But Simba would breathe a sigh of relief as it was on Thursday revealed that Yanga would also miss the service of their Ghanaian midfielder Ernest Boakye because of injury.

Midfielders Godfrey Boniface and Nurdin Bakari also face a race against time to be fit for the clash.
