The image displays a Hickory Horned Devil, which is the caterpillar stage of the Regal Moth (Citheronia regalis), also known as the Royal Walnut Moth.
  • Appearance:
These caterpillars are large, growing up to nearly 6 inches long, and are characterized by prominent, spiky "horns".

  • Harmless Nature:
Despite their intimidating appearance, the Hickory Horned Devil caterpillars are harmless to humans and lack venom or chemical defenses.

  • Life Cycle:
They primarily feed on the leaves of host plants like walnut and hickory trees, then burrow into the ground to pupate before emerging as adult Regal Moths.

  • Misinformation:
The text overlay in the image, claiming it to be a magnified HIV virus, is incorrect and misleading. The image clearly depicts an insect larva, not a virus.
