Out of the candidates who sat for a qualifying test at CBE in a certain year, 75% were males. 54% of the female candidates failed and 70% of the male candidates passed. If 135 female candidates failed, how many female and male candidates passed?

Since 135 is the number of female candidates failed, and it is equal to 54%, the total percentage of females = 100% = 1,
Number of girls passed = 100% - 54% = 46% = 0.46 (in decimal) thus,
135 = 0.54
? = 0.46
On cross multiplying
(0.46 x 135) ÷ 0.54
= 115 females.
Thus 115 females passed.
The percent of total girls = 100% - 75% = 25%
= 0.25
0.25 = (115 + 135)

0.25 = 250
0.75 = ?
By cross multiplying,
(0.75 x 250) ÷ 0.25 = 750 total male candidates.
Taking 70% x 750 =
525.Thus, 525 male candidates passed.

Let
A = Males who sat for the test
B = Females who sat for the test

Given: 54% of B failed the test, and their number is 135.
ie 54%*B = 135

54B/100 = 135, B = 135 * 100/54

B = 250.

Therefore: Female candidates who passed is 250-135=115.

Note: A is 75% of total candidates, thus gives B a 25%.
25% of (A+B)= 250, then A+B = 250*100/25 = 1000.

A= 1000-B (remember, B = 250).

Then, A = 750.

70% of Male candidates passed, ie 70%*750 = 525

Therefore: Male candidates who passed is 525.
