Diogo Dalot impressed on his Man Utd debut in Bern
We take a closer look at Diogo Dalot's impressive debut for Manchester United as they beat Young Boys 3-0 in Bern.
The Portuguese right-back had missed the start of the season due to injury following his £19m move from Porto, but got his chance to shine on Wednesday night on the biggest stage.
Jose Mourinho has already given him a big billing, insisting he is the best full-back in Europe in his age group, and he certainly showed promise in a hard-fought United win.

Dalot was making his debut after knee surgery in the summer
Replacing Antonio Valencia, who was left at home due to concerns as to how he would react to the artificial pitch in Switzerland, 19-year-old Dalot was energetic from the off.
In the first 30 minutes, Dalot broke free down the right on three occasions, drawing Young Boys left-back Loris Benito in before beating him for pace with ease.

Match report

Even when his touch went awry on the right touchline, giving Benito a few yards head-start, Dalot simply strode past him to cross at the byline.
Getting to the byline is one thing; delivering incisively is another. His four crosses were hit and miss, but it is clear Mourinho will look to use both Luke Shaw and Dalot regularly given their superior pace as United look to exploit the flanks with more regularity.

Jose Mourinho was full of praise for the 19-year-old
What stood out most was Dalot's confidence. He looked comfortable in a United shirt, closer to the age of the man he replaced than his 19 years and mere 32 senior career appearances.
We'll no doubt see more of Dalot this season, and he even spoke maturely after the game about the importance of competition for places at full-back in Mourinho's team.

"That's good for the team, that's competition, that's what every player likes," he told MUTV. "My job is to make a difficult decision for the coach."
After the game, Mourinho reserved a special mention for Dalot, who completed 90 minutes on his United bow.
"If he starts arriving in possible scoring positions, that can be a plus for the team. I am happy with that. The team had good stability in the midfield to allow him to go into these kind of positions. I am happy with the good solid performance of the team, more than any individual.

Dalot signed from Porto for £19m in the summer window
"It was a very good, solid performance after knee surgery. Everyone can see the potential and everyone could see he's a 19 year old player who has more than 10 years to play for Manchester United."
United fans mustn't get carried away; this was a 7/10 performance which slowed down in the second half, and were it not for Christian Fassnacht getting the ball stuck under his foot inside the box, Dalot's slip at the vital moment may have proved costly at 0-0.
But the way Dalot held himself in tricky surroundings and on a difficult surface was extremely promising as Valencia reaches his mid-30s and Mourinho looks to the future.

After featuring in the UEFA Champions League win at Young Boys, Andreas Pereira left Stade de Suisse with a smile on his face. The Academy graduate had just helped the team to an important victory, and had appeared in the Europe’s top competition for the club he loves.
The road to the first team has been long for our talented Belgium-born Brazilian, featuring two educational loan spells in La Liga, yet occasions like the victory in Switzerland make it all worthwhile. Following his substitute appearance against the Swiss champions, Andreas spoke exclusively to us…

That was a perfect away performance from the team – did it feel like that?
“I think it was a very good performance from the players. Winning 3-0 in the first away game, I think is very good, it gives confidence for the team and we have to kick on now.”

There was plenty said about the artificial surface before the game – was it difficult in the end?
“It was difficult. I think we had to adapt a bit, but that is normal. We always have to adapt to different pitches. We knew we had to play here, on this pitch, so I think we did quite well, considering it was the first time that we played on this artificial pitch.”

Does the team ever train on the indoor pitch at the Aon Training Complex?
“No we never train on that. We always train on grass because, in the Premier League, we play on grass and normally in the Champions League as well. Only when the weather is too bad, we train indoors on there [laughs]!”

HIGHLIGHTS: YOUNG BOYS 0 UNITED 3VIDEO
How does it feel to be involved in a big Champions League night for United?
“It is very good for me. I am learning a lot. I just want to make sure I can do the most for the team and help us win. Hopefully, I can do more and more in every game.”

Your good friend Fred played well. Do you feel he’s progressing nicely?
“He is doing great. He is settling in more and more. He is feeling at home more and more. We are doing our best to make him feel at home as well. You can see that on the pitch - he is playing better and better in each game.”

After your loan spell at Valencia last season, you must have half an eye on our next Champions League Group H game?
“Yeah, it is my old team, I was there last season. Hopefully we can win those games against them as it would be good for our Champions League chances. I still speak to some friends that I have there and they will be good games.”

Are you surprised that Valencia lost at home to Juventus?
“I don't know really. Juventus are a very big team as well, we knew it would be a big game between them. But we have won our game. That is what counts and hopefully we can keep winning.”

Following three successive wins at Burnley, Watford and Young Boys, confidence must be high heading into Saturday’s home match against Wolves?
“Yeah, we are confident of getting a fourth win in a row. We have to keep winning and show that we are the best.”

Jose Mourinho reflected on a 'good' Manchester United performance after the Reds comfortably beat Young Boys 3-0 in the opening Champions League group match.
The boss singled out contributions from Diogo Dalot, who made his debut for the club, and Luke Shaw as his side eased past the Swiss champions with a brace from Paul Pogba and a second-half goal from Anthony Martial.
Speaking to BT Sport and in his post-match press conference, Mourinho highlighted Dalot's potential at United and also identified Pogba's confidence to take another penalty, following the Frenchman's miss from the spot against Burnley earlier this month.
GOOD PERFORMANCE AFTER DIFFICULT START
“Job done. It wasn't phenomenal, but good enough. I'm happy. I can understand the reasons why we didn’t start well, why we took 25 minutes to be in control, I can see why Young Boys forced it a little in the beginning. They did the same against Dinamo Zagreb too. They know how difficult it is for opponents on this pitch, so they forced it a little and created problems. The goal changed this and then we were in control. It’s important to start with a victory.”

SHAW AND DALOT
“I think Diogo and Luke played very well – our danger came from both. They had fantastic movement, depth, crosses, assists, involved in the most dangerous actions and defended very well. Both played very well but of course Luke has been here for a few years, while it was Diogo’s first match for the club after knee surgery. I think it was a solid performance – you could see his potential. He’s a 19-year-old defender with more than 10 years to play for Manchester United.”
POGBA'S PERFORMANCE
“It was good. He felt a bit tired in the last part of the game, that's why I took him off, but yeah, he was solid, class, giving the team the pace that we need sometimes. To increase the pace, keep the possession and iust keep control of the tempo. Of course he scored a very good goal and the penalty showed personality, because when you miss a penalty you have doubts about taking the next one, but there were no doubts for him.”

PLAYING ON AN ARTIFICIAL PITCH
“After training yesterday, and it was only light training, I had some players who were feeling their ankles or backs. They were sore. It's not easy, especially for people that are not adapted to it, so I think there was also a bit of fear in the duels. People are more used to playing on great surfaces in England with always water, if not rain. The clubs, they provide the water and the football is much more beautiful that way. Now I can say, because the game is over, I don't understand how you can play the best club competition on an artificial pitch.”
THREE WINS IN A ROW
“At half-time I told the players it was the third time in a row that we arrived at half-time winning 2-0. Against Burnley we didn’t finish it off but didn’t concede; at Watford we did concede and we were in trouble. Today we could have had more of that but in the second half the players were responsible and ambitious to score the third goal. What I like most is after two defeats, we’ve had three victories in a row away with solid performances. Now let’s go home again on Saturday.”

TWO GOOD OPPONENTS ON THE HORIZON
“It was important for us to win, because probably, I just said probably, every team is going to make six points against Young Boys. So, it was important for us not to waste points today, but now we have three consecutive matches, two against Juventus and one against Valencia and it is in these matches where we must get the points to qualify and of course, they are two very good opponents.”
