Berbatov eyes American return

Dimitar Berbatov may be enjoying his summer break at the moment, but you can bet Manchester United's pre-season tour of the USA next month will be well and truly in the striker's thoughts as he relaxes following a record-breaking season.

The Bulgarian helped the Reds make history last term and, alongside Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez, topped the Barclays Premier League scoring charts.
Despite press speculation linking him with an Old Trafford exit, Berbatov is adamant he'll stay and fight for his place and expects to be involved when United head to the States in July for a five-game pre-season tour.
Speaking exclusively to ManUtd.com in May, Berbatov said: "I'm looking forward to the tour because I really enjoyed my time in America last year. Everybody was very nice and friendly and the cities are very interesting.
"We'll see a few different places this year and meet different people, which is good. I must admit, a lot of people, including myself, were hoping we would go back to America this year. We're all excited."

Blackburn Rovers defender Phil Jones is reportedly having a medical at Manchester United ahead of a move to the Premier League champions. Read

MANCHESTER UNITED have launched a last-ditch bid to snatch Phil Jones from Liverpool's grasp.

The Blackburn centre-back, 19, is available for £16million due to a clause in his contract.
And United boss Alex Ferguson is hoping to land England Under-21 ace Jones ahead of his bitter Anfield rivals.
Jones was today undergoing a medical in Manchester ahead of sealing the move.
Kop manager Kenny Dalglish looked the favourite to sign Jones, who has impressed since making his Premier League debut last March.
He has become a key player for Rovers and made 28 appearances last season despite being hampered by injuries.
He signed a five-year deal with the Lancashire club in February but looks certain to move on this summer.
Jones is set to fly out to the European Under-21 Championship this week after he was selected to play for England.
He has played six matches for the U-21s as well as being capped four times at Under-19 level.

Papers: Sanchez favours United

Phil Thomas writes in The Sun...
San's the man for £30million
Manchester United will have to splash £30million to prise winger Alexis Sanchez from Udinese. United were hoping to land the Chile golden boy, 22, for £5m less - but the Italians are refusing to lower their asking price. Sanchez prefers a link-up with Alex Ferguson ahead of Barcelona, as he knows he would spend as much time on the bench as the Nou Camp pitch. His agent, Fernando Felicevich, has met bosses at the Spanish giants to discuss personal terms but NO deal is in place. And there is a belief at United, who have also held extensive talks, that it is a ploy by Udinese to push up Sanchez's price.

The same paper claims Aston Villa will permit United to complete a £16m move for Ashley Young - who's getting married this weekend - and says Spurs boss Harry Redknapp values Luka Modric at more than the £20m the Reds would reportedly pay. Meanwhile The Times quotes the player's adviser Mario Mamic ruling out a move.

The Daily Star suggests Sir Alex Ferguson will have to wait to sign David de Gea as the Atletico Madrid keeper is keen to focus on the UEFA Under-21 Championships with Spain. The Daily Express says Gabriel Obertan and Wes Brown could move to Southampton as part of a deal to bring in 17 year-old winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The Sun attributes the following quotes to Chicharito, regarding his loyalty to United amid reports of interest from Real Madrid. "From now on I'll owe a great debt to Sir Alex for bringing me to Europe. I want to win many titles to give back to the team that opened the doors for me."

ALEX FERGUSON took his summer spending spree to £35million by signing Blackburn's Phil Jones.

And the Manchester United boss will not stop there as he rejuvenates his title-winning squad.
Jones, 19, had a medical at Carrington yesterday after agreeing a five-year deal initially worth £40,000 a week.
Fergie snatched the defender from under Liverpool's nose in a £16.5m swoop.

He already has an £18.3m deal for At- letico Madrid From Back Page keeper David De Gea, 20, in the bag and is close to sealing a £20m move for Aston Villa's Ashley Young.

Now Fergie is even considering joining the race for Udinese's £30m-rated ace Alexis Sanchez, 22, who is also a Manchester City target.
Jones - who last night jetted out to join the England Under-21 squad in Denmark - is clearly part of Ferguson's vision for the future as he injects more youth into his squad.

And Wayne Rooney last night gave Jones' move the thumbs up, tweeting: "He's one of the toughest defenders I played against last season."

Jones aiming to be the new Rio

PHIL JONES admits he has spent his early years modelling his game on Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand.

Which is handy as the swashbuckling young centre-back will be seen as Ferdinand's long-term successor at Old Trafford.

ASTON VILLA have given the green light for Ashley Young's £16million move to Manchester United.

Villa's American owner Randy Lerner is due to meet the winger today.
England ace Young, 25, has only a year left on his contract and wants Champions League football.
Lerner also expects to hold talks with former England boss Steve McClaren in the next 48 hours about the vacant manager's job.
Fans are not keen on the Wally with the Brolly taking over but Villa Park bigwigs are warming to McClaren, who is keen to get back into top-flight management.

Sky Sports claim this afternoon that United have stepped up interest in Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri. They claim on their website that the Frenchman is now Sir Alex's "top target" and say he is seen as "an ideal replacement for the retired Paul Scholes". Watch this space.

Usain Bolt: I could play for Man Utd

June 9, 2011

Athletics star Usain Bolt has said that he would like to play football when he retires from his current sport, and showed his trademark confidence by suggesting he is good enough to play for Manchester United.

Usain Bolt: Better than Bebe?

Bolt, who gained a worldwide audience at the 2008 Beijing Olympics by setting records for both 100 metres and 200 metres, is confident he could electrify Old Trafford in the same manner.

"I really want to try soccer after I retire because I've watched football over the years and I think I could be a good contender," Bolt told the BBC. "I'm really looking forward to it and yes, I definitely think I'm good enough to play for Manchester United. I'm good enough because I'm quick, I have a little skill - I have to refine it a little bit but I should be good enough."
The speedy Jamaican met the Red Devils at their training ground back in 2009 and apparently offered sprinting tips to then-United star Cristiano Ronaldo.

Even if it isn't for Sir Alex Ferguson's squad, Bolt is expected to arrive in England next summer to compete in the 2012 Olympic games in London. For now, the world's fastest man is focusing on his 200 metre offering at Thursday's Diamond League meeting in Oslo.

Ashley takes Utd's spree up to £55m ALEX FERGUSON snapped up Ashley Young in a £20million swoop last night. It took Manchester United's summer spending to a whopping £55m - leaving their title rivals in the shade. The arrival of Aston Villa's England star Young completes an astonishing hat-trick of Fergsuon buys worth £55m as he begins to build a new dynasty.

Young, 25, passed a medical at the club's Carrington Training Ground yesterday and put pen to paper on a four-year contract.
He now joins Phil Jones who moved on Wednesday from Blackburn to Old Trafford in a £16.5m transfer.
And a deal has also been agreed for Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea to move from Atletico Madrid to United for £18.5million.
Ferguson always likes to get his business done early in the summer but this is quick moving even by his own standards with the season finishing less than a fortnight ago.

Despite winning the title and the Champions League Ferguson knew he needed to breath new life into his squad.
Last season's poor away record and stuttering start worried him and Ferguson told the club's owners the Glazers midway through the season that big spending would be needed.

Ferguson snatched both Jones from under the noses of rivals Liverpool and Kop boss Kenny Dalglish was also keen on Young.
Young can play as a winger or second striker and is a major addition to United's already huge attacking threat.
