Tanzania judge urges arrest of opposition leader
A Tanzanian judge on Thursday urged police to execute an arrest warrant issued last week against the country's opposition leader in parliament, lawmaker Freeman Mbowe.
Mbowe, who is president of the main opposition Chadema party, and 18 others are being prosecuted in an Arusha court for conspiracy to commit an offence, unlawful assembly and rioting.
Judge Charles Magesa issued arrest warrants for Mbowe and six others on May 27 when they failed to appear in court for a hearing on their case, which has been repeatedly delayed.
Magesa withdrew the warrants for everyone but Mbowe after the others appeared in person or sent representatives to explain their failure to show up for the previous hearing.
"The arrest warrant has not been executed and (Mbowe) did not come to explain why he was absent," Magesa said at an open hearing on the case.
He then instructed "the police to ensure that he be arrested."
The charges stem from a January 5 opposition rally in Arusha that was dispursed violently by police where three people were killed by gunfire.
Chadema Secretary General Wilbrod Slaa, a loser in the country's October presidential election and a Chadema lawmaker face additional charges for demanding that President Jakaya Kikwete resign
