I read with disappointment on our President's view on the on going attacks directed to religious institutions. I'm aggrieved by his non commital statements as well as lack of authority in dealing with such serious issues. It is absurd to learn that the person we have elected to take care of the well being, security and economic prosperity of Tanzanians is a mere passenger in this situation. It is clear that the threat has been there since the attacks of different religious leaders in Zanzibar and Geita. The government has Police, National Security,Army intelligency in their arsenal to deal with culprits. But what we have seen is sluggish and weakened response to the various attacks so far.
Further weakness is seen in the way our disciplined forces dealing with some cases which are exaggerated with number of serious charges and at the end the judiciary find them to be wrongly charged ending with minimal sentences. Refer the cases of Sheikh Ponda, Lwakatare and G. Lema.
The gorvenment should know that it has a mandate to make Tanzania secure and safe. It is not a favour but obligatory responsibility given to them and paid for by us the tax payers.
