The Kenya - Tanzania border in Taveta has been closed after motorist protested the increment of vehicle levy by Tanzania authorities.

The Tanzanian government has imposed a vehicle levy of USD200 for vehicles entering its borders.

Stranded travellers at the border have asked the Kenya and Tanzania governments to resolve the situation.

From Saturday, authorities from the two countries have held discussions on the issue, which has jeopardised the free movement of goods and people across the border.

"We have passengers who were heading to Moshi but we cannot move because of the new rules, which have been imposed by the Tanzanian government," said Mr Salim Abushir, a driver with the Tahmeed Bus Services.

Mr Simon Karasha, a tour van driver accused Tanzanian Immigration officials of harassing travellers whenever they tried to cross the border.

"It is a pity that Tanzanians can trade in Kenya without any problem. We want out government to resolve the problem," said Mr Karasha.

He added, "We cannot take tourist to Tanzania because of unknown reasons yet they (Tanzanians) can visit different tourist destinations in Kenya."

The Daily Nation has established that Tanzanian traders plying trade at the busy Taveta market do so without valid work permits unlike their Kenyan counterparts who have been forced to acquire work permits to conduct business in Tanzania.

Wako hapa wana tupia wazungu lawama za ukoloni na bado wao wanatenda hivi vitu. kwani, serikali ya tanzania inaongozwa na watu kutoka Rwanda ambao wana damu ya akina felicien kabuga. ikiwa EAC ilivunjwa na wakenya, there is a new initiaive, basi nadhani the government of kenya should reciprocate kufurusha hawa watu. Kama wako SADCC why are they sending their representatives to EAC?!! au ni vile HQ iko Arusha.

Sasa hivi EAC twajua ina serious participants wanne. Kwa vile ninatizama Tanzania is a complete waste of time. Ni watu ambao hawajielewi, They neither know left nor right. they are lodged on complete idiocy.

Kwanini hatuoni Uganda na uchumi wao mdogo wakinyanyasa watu kwenye boda Malaba?. Kwani, TZ mumefilisika kiwango hicho. This is simmilar to trade embargoes BTW, kwasababu sioni jinsi serikali itatoza watu pesa kiasi nyingi, au uwenda ikiwa tz business sector imejaa wageni kutoka EAC, ndio maana wanatafuta kila njia za kumaximize, mapato but at the end of the day naona its a way of putting a message across.

Jambo lingine, naona huyu mtu anayelalamika si hata wa kutoka kenya mkoa wa kati, lakini Mr karasha anaonekana ni mtanzania who is willing to do business but, due to his kinsmen's narrow scope of thinking inanishangaza kwa nini wakati huu, watu wanatafuta kufanya biashara, serikali inaweza kuongeza & 200.

Hili taifa ni lini itaondoka kutoka kwenye giza???

That having being said, I think the way to go is below??

Dogo kuwa mstaarabu, idiocy mara narrow scope ndio naneno gani hayo? Au ndio adabu ya kikenya? Mbona sisi tukiingia kenya mwatuuliza vipande kila mahali?

Tanzania ni tamaa tu
Sasa watalii wengi wanashukiaga Kenya sababu tz hawajui kujitangaza kuwa hata Kilimanjaro ipo etc

Sasa magari yakianza kucharge abiria pesa ili walipe boda basi tena abiria wata chagua kwenda Mombasa na kwenda direct Zanzibar then warudi Kenya wakitoe

Black or White, no gray shades.

Are you forcing to visit us! You are a liability to us! Why aren't you supposed to apply for a work permit? Jobs ni za Watanzania, we don't need illegal aliens! retaliate tuone nani ataumia, you keep begging to be in Tanzania! We can trade with the rest of the world, but not you..because u r conmen!

KIMISNGI WATANZANIA WENGI HAWAPENDI WAKENYA, I DON,T LIKE THEM EITHER! JIULIZE KWANINI? SLAP THEM USD 400!

kwa ukoo wenu pengine munadamu ya kutopenda watu, lakini are those the sentiments of all people in your land or its your own thoughts?? you can trade with the rest of the world, but not us, kwani your nationalistic approach to things is admirable. Amkeni ndugu zetu, tufanye sote bidii!!!

it is only a fool in Kenya will make noises on their government retaliating on Tanzania's introduction of US$ 200 per truck since once that border is closed, the second largest trade partner to Kenya (officially first from 2011 data) will seize to trade and u know what even Ugandans r moving south to a more efficient port i.e. Dar es salaam! kenya will remain with Somalia and South Sudan and oversea partners to trade with and considering the infrastructure there is poor the adverse effects on Kenya's economy will be larger than in Tanzania's! So Kenyans watch out what ur wishing!

SO U WANT TO TEACH us on how we should be conducting our business. unjua kshs 20 inayotozwa na wakenya kwa kila kilo ya agri product inayoingizwa kenya..nyie mfanye, sie tuwaangalie tu...it was long overdue, and i hope it's there to stay (that $ 200), lazima tukusanye pesa bana!

Uganda hawawezi kuenda Dar, maan the distance is not cost effective.

funga basi halafu tuone! utafanya biashara na Al-Shabaab kule Somalia wakati sie tuna other 8 countries that trade with us from both EAC and SADC (i.e. Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, DRC, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique and Comoro Islands) Do ur math before starting to argue ati sisi na Uganda can't trade as if we can't speak with them in English! our port has taken 19% of trade from Mombasa plus the railway project that Museveni is pushing day and night to execute! Au zile arrogance zenu za ati tanzania middle class ni 12% is giving u guys a big head! hahah watch what u wish my friend that ecomomy of urs will grow at 2% this year if u r not careful!

Never witnessed such an ill convinced people, how will u by closing your border with Kenya woo Ugandans to trade with you? Already its being established major industries, banks and supermarkets from all over EA shun your market causes its actually not a spending Economy. If this aint adequate, never seen a government loose priority to what would benefit its economy, too much work permits and restriction ceilings. No wonder WOOLWORTH had enough of you guys.
Anyway for your info, most trucks you are chargin that levy aint Kenyan anyway. Probably these are goods that were imported to Tz via Kenya port. Its no secret that though your port is small it is still the most inefficient state facility. Take the catalogue of imported goods, compare goods that Uganda imported via Tz and Kenya. In the same view..take Rwandas import catalogue and have a brief notes comparison. Close that border, you are actually just adding a liability to your route, promote us i dare say.

so why weeping on that border closure decision? let that remains closed and see who will suffer more otherwise pay US$ 200 levy per truck! end of story...

we pumbavu kweli SADC ina nchi 16 na Tanzania's economy is third biggest in that block after SA and Angola (check ur facts) just the same way as Kenya is the third economic powerhouse in COMESA behind Egypt and Libya! i don't know where ur getting ur concepts ati Tanzania does not trade within SADC! do ur research to see how many companies have opened up shops in Zambia, Zimbabwe, DRC and Mozambique!
