The South Sudan Embassy in Nairobi has reportedly been closed after the government fell four months behind on rent payments, disrupting consular services for South Sudanese living in Kenya.
The embassy, located in Kilimani, was reportedly shut on Tuesday, August 11. South Sudanese seeking services, including travel documents, have already been affected, with one visitor saying he was turned away by security guards after finding the premises closed.
The closure is not the first such incident. The Nairobi mission reportedly faced a similar shutdown over rent arrears in November 2025 before resuming operations.
The latest development comes amid reports of severe fiscal and cash-flow challenges in South Sudan, with the country's oil-dependent economy facing mounting financial pressures. Civil society leader Edmund Yakani has described the closure as damaging to South Sudan’s image and diplomatic interests.
The situation also comes as newly appointed Ambassador Simon Juach Deng prepares to take up his Nairobi post in September.
