DAR ES SALAAM: It is a milestone achievement for the Tanzania Police Force following the apprehension of their most-wanted fugitive criminal, John Pambalu, in the northern city of Arusha.

John Pambalu, who played a vital part in the violence on October 29, spent much of his time hiding in Kenya to evade Tanzanian operatives before the police successfully captured him.

According to the Tanzanian Criminal Procedure Act, the offenses are non-bailable. He is scheduled to face court on October 19, 2026, after which he will be remanded at Ukonga Prison as pre-trial detention prior to committal proceedings.

His time has come. Let's keep him in our prayers.

US eases travel warning for Tanzania as Americans lead visitor market in its $4.4 billion tourism industry

  • The United States lowered Tanzania’s nationwide travel advisory on 16 October.
  • Americans are now advised to exercise increased caution rather than reconsider travel.
  • The change matters to a tourism industry that earned $4.41 billion in 2025.
  • Stricter advice remains for the Mtwara border area adjoining Mozambique.
The decision comes as the United States remains Tanzania’s leading visitor source market, giving Washington’s assessment particular relevance to safari operators, hotels and other tourism businesses.
Tanzania welcomed approximately 2.29 million international tourists in 2025, up from 2.14 million a year earlier. Tourism earnings increased by 13%, outpacing the growth in arrivals as visitor spending also rose.

The advisory change follows nearly a year of heightened caution after Tanzania’s disputed 2025 election, when American officials warned of protests and potential travel disruptions.

According to the US State Department’s updated advisory, issued on 16 October 2026, Tanzania has moved from Level 3, “Reconsider Travel”, to Level 2, “Exercise Increased Caution”. Its published history confirms the decrease.

Why the American market matters

The latest official International Visitors’ Exit Survey, compiled by Tanzanian institutions including the central bank and statistics bureau, identifies the United States, Italy and France as the country’s leading source markets.
The survey puts annual tourism receipts at $4.41 billion in 2025, compared with $3.90 billion in 2024. Average visitor spending reached $289 per person per night.

Tanzania’s attractions include the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Mount Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar. The sector connects wildlife and beach tourism with accommodation, transport, guiding and other services, making international visitor confidence commercially important.

The downgrade could support that confidence, although there is no evidence yet that it has increased bookings or revenue.

Warnings remain near Mozambique

Washington retains Level 3 advice for the Mtwara border area adjoining Mozambique, including the A19 highway, citing terrorism risks. US government employees require special authorisation to travel there.
The revised nationwide advisory also adds a health risk indicator, noting limited medical services, particularly outside Dar es Salaam and Arusha. Other cautions include crime, unrest, arbitrary enforcement of laws and the targeting of gay and lesbian people.

The department has not specified the assessment behind the downgrade. Travellers are still advised to avoid demonstrations and arrange insurance covering medical evacuation

The US Issues Travel Advisory Against Tanzania Over Protests & Terrorism

View: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fnexG0tKk3g

The US has issued a Level 3 travel advisory for Tanzania, urging citizens to reconsider travel due to post-election deadly protests. The advisory highlights security risks, possible terrorist activity in Mtwara, and safety concerns for same sex couples.

The recent violence threatens Tanzania's booming tourism industry, even as renowned safari destinations like the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Conservation Area attract hundreds of thousands of tourists every year.

As President Samia Suluhu Hassan takes the oath amid lockdowns and internet blackouts, questions arise about Tanzania’s democracy, stability, and economic future.
