Another French soldier has been killed in Mali, bringing the death toll of French troops in the West African country to four, the office of the French President Francois Hollande says.


According to a statement released by Hollande's office on Wednesday, a sergeant from the 68th African artillery regiment lost his life in clashes with local fighters in Mali some 100 kilometers from the town of Gao.

Mali mission: British troops arrive to help local forces in battle against al-Qaeda fighters

The 40-strong infantry mission was sent to Mali to help train its troops who have been fighting a bitter war against Islamists militants

More than 20 soldiers from 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment arrived in Mali's capital Bamako from where they will train local forces.

They will be joined by elite troops from 45 Commando Royal Marines, 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery and a handful of soldiers from the Irish Republic.

For months now the British RAF has been flying C-17 transport planes into the West Africa country to help French forces who are leading the battle against al-Qaeda
