Mali crisis: 330 UK military personnel sent to West Africa
The UK is to deploy about 330 military personnel to Mali and West Africa to support French forces, No 10 has said.

This includes as many as 40 military advisers who will train soldiers in Mali, and 200 British soldiers to be sent to neighbouring African countries, also to help train the Malian army.

French-led forces are continuing their offensive against Islamist militants who seized northern Mali last year.

Mali conflict: Sandstorm 'blocks' French troops advance
France says a sandstorm is preventing its forces from entering the last major town in northern Mali in their offensive against Islamist militants.

The troops remained "blocked" at the airport in Kidal, the French defence minister said.

His statement appeared to conflict with earlier reports that French troops were in the town and militants had left.

Mali conflict: Timbuktu hails French President Hollande
France's president has said it would be wrong to assume the conflict in Mali is over, three weeks after launching an offensive to oust Islamist rebels.

Francois Hollande was speaking during a visit to the recently recaptured city of Timbuktu, where thousands welcomed him with chants of "Vive la France".

Mr Hollande said French forces would help Malian forces finish the job of re-establishing control in the north.
And he vowed later to help rebuild Mali and to restore its cultural sites.

Meanwhile, the UN said Tuareg and Arabs in the north were at risk of reprisals.

Crowds beating drums and chanting "Vive la France" have greeted French President Francois Hollande who is in the northern Malian town of Timbuktu, which French and Malian troops recaptured from Islamist rebels six days ago.

The rapturous crowd of perhaps 3,000 people craned their necks for a glimpse of the man they credit with liberating the ancient town from months of brutal occupation by Islamist militants.

Mr Hollande - accompanied by several senior ministers - went on the one-day visit to congratulate French troops who, in three weeks, have rolled back the insurgents who seized northern Mali last year.

But speaking in Timbuktu, Mr Hollande said that it would be wrong to assume that the conflict in Mali was over, and he stressed that France had no plans to stay in Mali long-term.​

The senior officials, including Mali's interim President Dioncounda Traore (third right) and Unesco General Director Irina Bokova (centre) - were driven to the 700-year-old mud mosque of Djingareyber and the Ahmed Baba Institute, where fleeing militants set fire to about 2,000 priceless manuscripts.

Before his trip, Mr Hollande said he would be urging the speedy deployment of African forces to Mali and stressed the need for Mali's transitional government to restore democracy soon.

Speaking in the capital Bamako later, Mr Hollande told crowds that Islamist rebels in the north had been pushed back, but not yet defeated.

He called for all human rights to be respected, even those of the insurgents.​

Kidal assault: French jets bomb northern Mali

French warplanes have carried out air strikes in Mali's far north as they try to secure the final rebel stronghold of Kidal after a three-week offensive.

Thirty jets targeted Islamist militants' training and communication centres around Tessalit - a mountainous area near the Algerian border.
French President Francois Hollande has pledged to help rebuild Mali after the rebels who seized its north are beaten.
But there are fears the fighters could re-group in the mountains near Kidal.

It is believed that several French civilian hostages are being held by militants in the area, making the situation even more delicate.

Although French troops captured Kidal's airport on Wednesday, rebels from a Tuareg group who want their own homeland in northern Mali - the MNLA - still have control of the town itself.

Malian Interim President Dioncounda Traore has offered to hold talks with the MNLA in order to help secure Kidal.

Mali conflict: Chad army 'enters Kidal'
Some 1,800 soldiers from Chad have entered Kidal, the last major town in northern Mali under rebel control, the French military says.

French-led forces captured Kidal's airport last week but have not yet secured the town itself.

After Islamist fighters fled, separatist Tuareg fighters took control of the town.


French special forces have had control of Kidal airport for several days.

It is no surprise that Chadian troops were used to help retake Kidal, the last major town held by the Islamists, and a key objective.
Battle-hardened and used to desert conditions, the Chadians are not part of the West African force that has been gathering in southern Mali to support the government army. The Chadians are, rather, directly backing their French allies.
The two armies have worked together before: France has a permanent military base in Chad, from which it is flying Mirage fighter jets to attack Islamist targets north of Kidal.
The French defence ministry said its warplanes had recently hit what it called Islamist "training and logistical bases" in the mountainous areas of Ageulhok and Tessalit near the border with Algeria.
It has been about two weeks since the French took control of the other two main towns in northern Mali - Timbuktu and Gao.
It appears that Kidal may have taken longer because it is the power centre of the ethnic Tuaregs who started the rebellion in the north last year before it was hijacked by the Islamists.
The Tuareg National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad has now tried to distance itself from the Islamist groups.
It is believed the French may have done a deal with them, so postponing till now the military occupation of Kidal by the French and Chadian armies.

But the Tuareg rebels did not want Mali's army, which has been fighting alongside the French forces, to enter Kidal - accusing its soldiers of killing Tuareg civilians in other towns they have recaptured with France's help.

Mali: France seeks UN peacekeeping role

The African-led mission in Mali should become a UN peacekeeping operation as soon as possible, France has told the UN Security Council.

French forces were deployed nearly a month ago to combat al-Qaeda-linked militants who had taken over Mali's desert northern regions.

But Paris says it wants to begin pulling out its 4,000 troops in March.

It wants planning for a transition to begin now so a handover can be completed in April.

Mali conflict: 'First suicide bombing' in Gao
A suicide bomber has blown himself up in the northern Mali town of Gao - the first since French-led troops began their assault on Islamist militants.

The attacker approached a group of soldiers on a motorbike before detonating an explosive belt, injuring one of them, witnesses said.

An al-Qaeda offshoot has claimed responsibility for the attack in the north's most populous city.
Meanwhile, army infighting in the capital has left one person dead.

At least five people were injured when heavily-armed regular soldiers clashed with elite "Red Beret" paratroopers at their base in Bamako.

Malian troops and suspected Islamist militants are exchanging heavy gunfire on the streets of Gao in northern Mali.

A BBC correspondent in the town says the clashes began near the central police station but have since spread.

Russia says the fighters France is battling in northern Mali are some of the very same ones it helped arm in Libya.

"In Mali, France is fighting against those it armed in Libya against (Muammar) Gaddafi's regime in violation of the UN Security Council (arms) embargo," AFP quoted Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov as saying in extracts of a television interview published by Russian news agencies on Sunday.
