Tanzania President Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan has on behalf of government sent condolences to the People of Zambia for the death of their Father of the Nation Dr. Kenneth Kaunda who passed away yesterday June 17, 2021 in Lusaka.

In her condolences President Samia has said Africa has lost a liberation fighter, patriot and true Pan Africanist.

The Government of Tanzania has declared seven days of national mourning.

During his days, the late Dr. Kaunda was not only a personal Friend of Mwalimu Julius Nyeyere but also a great partner in political, social and economic development of both countries and Africa at large.

Dr. Kaunda, Nyerere and Mao Tsetung, the former chairman of the People's Republic of China pioneered what was bythen called Great Uhuru Railways that later established Tanzania Zambia Railway ( TAZARA).

TAZARA is the greatest and most enduring political, social and economic monument of both Afro- Asian cooperation and Pan- African Society.

Both Dr. Kaunda and Mwalimu supported the total independence of African independence which earned them the respect and admiration in Africa and beyond.

Dr. Kaunda is well remembered for fighting apartheid regime in South Africa while Nyerere is called the father of Liberation Struggle in Sub Saharan African countries.

Dr Kaunda, Mwalimu Nyerere and Seretse Khama of Botswana were among the front line countries and founders of the African Development Community ( SADC) which was formally known as the Southern African Development Coordinating Conference ( SADCC).

Other founding fathers of SADC that was established in 1980 and formed in Lusaka are Dr. Augustinho Neto ( Angola), Samora Machel ( Mozambique) and Robert Mugabe ( Zimbabwe)

SADC was formed to advance the cause of nationsal political liberation in Southern Africa, and to reduce dependence particulary on the the then apartheid era South Africa.

When Dr Kaunda went on hunger strike in 1997 after being detained by the Late Frederick Chiluba Mwalimu Nyerere, visited him in the maximum security prison in the town of Kabwe and the two shared a small meal.

Mwalimu Nyerere convinced Dr Kaunda to end the strike after refusing food and water for some days.

We remember Mwalimu Nyerere saying that, " together we had a nice drink of orange juice and a little biscuit".

In short, Mwalimu Nyerere and Dr. Kaunda were champions of African Liberation and pan Africanism.
