Gaddafi's Daughter 'Killed' In 1986 May Be Alive

A daughter of Muammar Gaddafi who was said to have been killed in a US air raid on Tripoli in 1986 is still alive, it was reported yesterday.

And another of the Libyan leader's children -- his youngest son, Khamis -- appeared on TV days after rebels claimed he had been killed. He was shown visiting "victims of Nato raids" in hospital in footage said to have been filmed on Tuesday.

The fate of Hana Gaddafi, said to have been adopted, has long been a mystery, with some suggestions that she never existed.

'Die Welt', a German newspaper, reported yesterday that she was a doctor who worked for the country's health ministry. She was said to be a powerful figure who had used her status to block promotions for colleagues.

It gave her date of birth as November 1985, meaning she would have been six months old at the time of the US strike.

A photograph emerged in 1999 of Gaddafi's wife, Safia, meeting Nelson Mandela. The caption said she was with her daughters, Aisha and Hana.

Hana was also listed as an account holder of a bank account frozen in Switzerland this year. But there seems no end to the mystery. A Gaddafi friend dismissed the claims. "Hana? Gaddafi has one daughter. Her name is Aisha," he said.
