Formula One, also known as Formula 1 or F1 and referred to officially as the FIA Formula One World Championship, is the highest class of single-seater auto racing sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA).

The "formula", designated in the name, refers to a set of rules with which all participants' cars must comply. The F1 season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix (from French, originally meaning great prizes), held throughout the world on purpose-built circuits and public roads.

The results of each race are evaluated using a points system to determine two annual World Championships, one for the drivers and one for the constructors. The racing drivers, constructor teams, track officials, organisers, and circuits are required to be holders of valid Super Licences, the highest class of racing licence issued by the FIA.

F1 stars may have to take pay cut

Domenicali may be poised for some uncomfortable talks with his star driver
Formula One's top drivers may be forced to take a cut in wages as the global financial crisis hits the sport.

Ferrari team boss Stefano Domenicali, whose driver Kimi Raikkonen's salary is the highest in F1 at £35m, said teams had to make savings in all areas.
"When teams must significantly reduce costs, one could say you need an ace to make the difference," Domenicali said.

"But I feel in the current climate the big teams won't be able any more to offer the amounts some drivers get."
Felipe Massa, who missed out on winning the 2008 drivers' title for Ferrari by a single point, did not share Domenicali's views on reducing wages.

The Brazilian is believed to be paid £8m a year by the Italian marque and when asked about taking a wage cut, he said: "I'm not inclined to it.

"In a competitive sport like this, the driver plays a fundamental part, and the cost of the drivers are small compared to the total budget of the teams.
"The more people work to reduce costs, the better it is going to be for everybody."

Raikkonen, the 2007 world champion, has by far the biggest salary in the sport, but there are a number of other leading F1 drivers earning salaries of more than £10m - such as Renault's double world champion Fernando Alonso and this year's title winner Lewis Hamilton of McLaren.

A select few leading engineers in the sport - such as Red Bull's chief technical officer Adrian Newey - also earn salaries of several million a year.
Raikkonen's Ferrari contract was extended in September until the end of 2010, despite the Finn's largely lacklustre season, but Domenicali said changing it was not impossible.

Massa positive about new Ferrari

Felipe Massa said he expected Ferrari to be Formula One title contenders again in 2009 after giving the team's new car its first run on Monday.
The Brazilian, second to McLaren's Lewis Hamilton in 2008, drove about 60 miles at Mugello in the new F60.

The F60, the first 2009 car to be given a run-out, includes features to meet new rules aimed at aiding overtaking.
Massa said the new systems made it feel "completely different" but that the day had been "very positive".

The 27-year-old said he had been most apprehensive about using the new kinetic energy recovery system (kers), which stores the energy which would have been wasted as heat during braking and reapplies it during acceleration to provide a boost in power.
"It was not the day to do 100 laps and post times when the rules change so greatly from one year to another," Massa said.
"With kers, for example, you have a completely different feeling for driving the car.

"We resolved little problems that arise on the first day, but I am quite happy to do 100km and use kers, which was the most worrying aspect.
"In the end, we used it a little to start with and gradually increased the power and this is very positive.
"At the moment, we are at the start of a different cycle in Formula One and it won't be an easy experience, but I am convinced we can be competitive again."

Massa said he was looking forward to getting down to serious testing at the new Algarve circuit in Portugal next week, where Ferrari will be joined by all the leading teams with the exception of BMW Sauber and Red Bull.
"A day like this is not really all that exciting," Massa said, "but it is important here to get the car running and working so I did still enjoy it. We were able to get an important job done.

team brawn must busk in glory for the time being, hizo diffuser if declared illegal baada ya appeal watanyaganywa point zote, zikipitishwa ferrari nao zao watamodify, and that will be the end of dominance ya team brawn.button na barrichello may be on pole, but nahisi they are less on fuel and hence pit stop yao itakuja haraka sana.HAMILTON anatia huruma, lakini lest we forget schumacher alichukua ubingwa in a less superior car akiwa bennetton kwa hiyo hamilton fight like a man and stop crying
