This one-acre vineyard is part of the St. Benedict's Religious House Sakarani near Soni in the Usambara mountains in northern Tanzania. It's one of very few tropical vineyards at appr. 5 degrees south. Problems with growing wine grapes in the tropics include too short days and an unfavourable climate overall (too hot). This being in the mountains, at least the heat hurdle is partially overcome. They grow Chenin Blanc, which is the most commonly used white grape in South Africa, as well as a hybrid grape variety for their "port".
