Prince Edward Kijanangoma Rukidi has been named the next Omukama of Tooro, following the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died on August 27, 2026, and is set to be laid to rest this Saturday.

The announcement was made this evening at Karuziika Palace by Babiito clan leaders, with Msgr Isiah Mayombo reading the resolution on behalf of the 21-member succession committee.

The committee said it conducted consultations and due diligence before resolving that Prince Kijanangoma, son of the late Prince Christopher Paul Kijanangoma and grandson of former Omukama George David Rukidi, should take over the throne.

The enthronement will be conducted in accordance with Tooro Kingdom traditions and customs.

The announcement also clears earlier reports by Andrew Mwenda that the committee had settled on Desmond Kamurasi.

The succession dispute in Tooro Kingdom has deepened following the naming of Prince Edward Kijanangoma Rukidi as the new king, with Queen Mother Best Kemigisa challenging the process and appealing for her family to be allowed to mourn the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV in peace.

In a statement , Kemigisa said the royal family was grieving under what she described as "house arrest", following the deployment of security personnel around the palace and the removal of royal guards days before King Oyo's burial slated for September 12, 2026.

She appealed to the leadership of the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) and President Museveni to allow the family to leave the palace and receive mourners freely.
