The Attorney General, Dr Sam Mayanja, has said Tooro Kingdom is at liberty to proceed with preparations for the coronation of King Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, despite the ongoing dispute over the succession to the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
The Tooro Kingdom Supreme Council has set September 29, 2026, as the date for the coronation of Kijanangoma, who is expected to be enthroned as Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, the 14th Omukama of Tooro.
Mayanja’s position comes after he had initially advised that King Oyo’s will should guide the succession and that the dispute should be resolved through the courts before government formally recognises a successor. He had also said the government would not gazette Kijanangoma as king while the succession dispute remained unresolved.
However, with no formal appeal or court case having been registered to challenge the kingdom’s decision, Mayanja has indicated that Tooro authorities can continue with preparations for the planned coronation.
The succession dispute followed the death of King Oyo on August 27, 2026. Members of his immediate family have challenged Kijanangoma’s selection, citing the late king’s will and claims regarding a biological son who could be the heir.
