NICKLAS BENDTNER last night threatened to quit Arsenal unless he becomes a regular starter.
The Danish striker, who has started only two games this season after injury, said: "If the situation doesn't change and I'm still on the bench at Arsenal, I'll look for a transfer. That's obvious. "I feel I've done everything right in getting back to fitness. "I feel better than before the injury and at that point I was in the starting 11 and close to fulfilling my potential. When I'm 100 per cent fit, I can't accept sitting on the bench. "I'm turning 23 soon and it's important to my development and further career to play regularly. "I'll just say that I'm 100 per cent good enough for the starting 11 in Arsenal. "If my manager feels differently that's fair, and he's the one choosing the team, but then I disagree." Boss Arsene Wenger has kept faith with Moroccan Marouane Chamakh, who has scored eight goals.
And the Emirates boss copied Alex Ferguson and Rafa Benitez with his own Eric Cantona "trawler" moment as he discussed Bendtner and Manuel Almunia, who is also unhappy at not starting. While Fergie spoke about cows in fields and Benitez talked of priests on a mountain of sugar, Wenger went down a different track. He said: "You ask me 'we are on a train, who wants to go to the terminal station and that means nobody moves out when the train is moving.'" In other words, nobody is leaving - for the moment.
ARSENE WENGER hailed his Arsenal squad after a second successive away victory put them back in the title hunt. Goals from Bacary Sagna and Cesc Fabregas helped claim a 2-1 victory at Everton and move into second place in the Premier League table.
And after beating Wolves 2-0 at Molineaux on Wednesday, boss Wenger is confident his side can now mount a serious challenge to table-toppers Chelsea. He said: We have had two hard fought wins, built on spirit, desire and resilience.
"There is a great spirit and resilience in the side and there is more to come from this team." Skipper Fabregas meanwhile admitted his team-mates were nervous after Tim Cahill's late strike threatened to spark a dramatic comeback. He said: "The second goal was an important goal early in the second half. We knew they would push hard at us and at the end they scored and we were a bit nervous. "It was a good performance. Defensively we looked solid, our only regret is that last minute goal. We played very well, we were in control. "We knew their game was long ball but we did well against it." Fabregas now wants to see the team build on the win as they look to track down Chelsea. He added: "We want to do well until the end, this is just one more step. "It's good we're in second position, we're improving, We just need Chelsea to drop some points now."
ARSENE WENGER believes his team displayed all the qualities needed to be champions as Arsenal moved to within two points of leaders Chelsea. Boss Wenger declared: "I have been saying that for a long time, and here we showed all the most important qualities you need - desire, commitment, discipline and a togetherness for the full 90 minutes. "We had two very difficult away games against Wolves and Everton and we got six points. "We were a bit disappointed after last Sunday but the team has shown great spirit. "I feel the performance today has shown we have not only quality football but fighting spirit. Those are ingredients you need if you are to battle for the title."
Arsenal were so dominant for the first hour that they threatened a repeat of last season's remarkable 6-1 victory at Goodison Park. Goals from Sagna and Fabregas either side of the break underlined their supremacy, only for the visitors to then take their foot off the gas. Tim Cahill's 89th-minute strike meant Wenger and his players had to endure a nerve-jangling four minutes of stoppage time. Wenger added: "When we were 2-0 up I felt we tried too much to keep the score in a negative way, and we were punished. "We needed a few good saves from the keeper because we became too conservative."
The Arsenal manager played down Nicklas Bendtner's threat to leave the Gunners if he does not get a regular starting spot. The Danish striker was not even on the bench yesterday. But Wenger said: "It is very difficult for me. He was not in the squad today because he had a little groin problem. "But does he have a future here? Yes, at the moment, for the length of his contract, which has another three years to run. "I want him to stay. I've known Nicklas since he was 16 years old. I have a good rapport with him and I like him as a player and as a person - even if I do not necessarily agree with all his statements. "Van Persie is not ready yet, nor is Walcott completely. We have a problem in that respect at the moment." Wenger confirmed Jack Wilshere would join the England squad, despite substituting him at half-time.
WILLIAM GALLAS faces humiliation on his return to Arsenal with Spurs today. The French defender, who swapped North London clubs in the summer, will receive a hate-filled reception when he walks out at the Emirates.
And Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri is set to refuse to shake hands with the player he has been at war with for two years. Nasri's feud echoes Wayne Bridge's snub to John Terry when Manchester City played Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in February. Gunners ace Nasri, 23, has told his team-mates it would be hypocritical to shake hands with a player who once yelled at him for sitting in Thierry Henry's seat on the team bus at Euro 2008.
Gallas, 33, joined Arsenal from Chelsea in 2006 but did not even speak to Nasri in his last year at the club. Gunners players have attempted to change Nasri's mind and acknowledge Gallas, who was not always popular at the Emirates. Spurs boss Harry Redknapp wants Arsenal fans to be booted out today if they hurl abuse, while Gunners chiefs have told their stewards to confiscate all insulting banners.
Despite the potential for flashpoints, Arsenal are keeping security at normal levels and remain confident the derby will pass off peacefully.
Arsene Wenger said:'This is the strongest squad I've had,' said Wenger. 'Tomas Rosicky, Theo Walcott, Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri, Andrey Arshavin, Robin van Persie. All creative players, top-class players, so we had no need to do that. We are not in the search in this department.'
