Peter Elwelu was Deputy Chief of Defence Forces from June 2021 until March 2024. President Museveni then replaced him, making Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba the CDF, and Elwelu became a senior presidential adviser and the army’s representative in Parliament. He was among 1,346 officers set for retirement in July 2025

While Elwelu was deputy CDF, he reportedly did not have a good relationship with Muhoozi, who was then Commander of Land Forces. In December 2024, Muhoozi publicly called Elwelu a “buffoon” and said he was unworthy of serving in the army. Muhoozi said he would soon capture him, and reports say Museveni stopped Muhoozi’s determination to arrest him.

The latest escalation began on 27 October 2026. Muhoozi announced on X that he had demoted Elwelu from Lieutenant General to Private, called him a traitor, and said over 20 former soldiers linked to him had been arrested.

Claim:

A post circulating on X claims that a large cache of ammunition and weapons was recovered from a swamp in Teso, and alleges that the location was one of the hideouts where Gen. Peter Elwelu reportedly hid temporarily before moving to another hideout.

Findings:

A Reverse-image search shows the photos were circulating before they were linked to Elwelu.
A Google Lens “exact matches” search on the weapons image returned multiple copies. The earliest were about four days before the check on 31 October 2026, They appeared on a social media account (Mecky Merchiore Kayiranga).

CDF Muhoozi Kainerugab's own posts and the news coverage describe weapons recovered from Elwelu’s home, not a swamp. The swamp is only mentioned in Mwenda’s claim that he alleges Elwelu is hiding.

Verdict: MISLEADING

There is no credible evidence that the photos show ammunition recovered from a swamp in Teso or anything linked to Elwelu.
