Pilgrims indiscipline and failure to adhere to timetables has been blamed for the stampede at the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia's holy city of Mecca.
In controversial statements, African pilgrims have been blamed for this indiscipline. Saudi-owned al-Arabiya TV reportedly quoted the head of the central Hajj committee, Prince Khaled al-Faisal, blaming the stampede on "some pilgrims with African nationalities".
Similarly, Saudi health minister Khaled al-Falih, told El-Ekhbariya television that "many pilgrims move without respecting the timetables [set by authorities, which was the] principal reason for this type of accident. If the pilgrims had followed instructions, this type of accident could have been avoided," ibtimes reported.
At least 717 people are reported to have died and and 850 injured in one of the worst tragedies to hit the holy city.
Saudi Arabia's crown prince, Prince Mohamed bin Nayef, has ordered an investigation into the tragedy following accusations over lax safety and security measures.
