11 arrested in Busia operation targeting stolen livestock meat

Police in Busia District have arrested 11 suspects in an intelligence-led operation targeting butcheries suspected of selling meat from stolen animals and meat without the required inspection stamps.

The operation was conducted in Arubaina, Sofia, Nangwe, Solo B and Busia Main Market within Busia Municipality by a multi-agency team led by the Busia Municipality Veterinary Officer.

Police said the operation followed investigations in which canine teams used sniffer dogs to identify butcheries suspected of handling meat from stolen animals.

However, some operators reportedly abandoned their premises after noticing the canine teams, making it difficult for investigators to apprehend them.

Police subsequently mounted a coordinated operation targeting butcheries suspected of dealing in unauthorised and unstamped meat.

During the operation, the team recovered unstamped goat and cattle meat, turkeys, chickens, weighing scales, stones, pangas and other items considered to be of evidential value.

The 11 suspects were arrested and taken to Busia Central Police Station, where they were charged with stealing cattle.

Police said residents welcomed the operation and commended the participating agencies for efforts to curb livestock theft and the illegal trade in animal products.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspected cases of livestock theft, illegal slaughter and the sale of meat from unauthorised sources to the nearest police station.
