The UPDF and police have been deployed in Busia town to support municipal enforcement teams following the stabbing to death of an enforcement officer last week.
Tusker Ofubo, alias Master, was stabbed several times on Friday along Tororo Road while conducting revenue mobilisation. A hawker allegedly attacked him with a knife after accusing him of impounding his mobile phone chargers.
On Monday, security personnel joined enforcement teams in operations targeting street vendors, starting at Mawero roadside market before extending to Nangwe and Arubaine.
Head of enforcement George Wandera said the deployment followed concerns that some people operating in non-gazetted spaces were armed.
Nearly 20 people, mostly women, were arrested and their merchandise impounded. Wandera said the suspects would be arraigned in court.
However, some residents complained of wrongful arrests. Juliet Atieno said she was arrested from her home, while Beatrice Nafula said she was picked up while having breakfast at a tea stall.
Residents expressed mixed reactions, with some arguing that the operation threatened the livelihoods of women dependent on small businesses, while others welcomed the deployment to protect enforcement officers.
The suspects are being held at Busia Police Station awaiting court proceedings.
