The government of Zanzibar has said from this fiscal year doctors would be paid risk and house allowances.

State Minister in the President’s Office (Public Service and Good Governance) Haji Omar Kheir revealed this when responding to a question from Wawi representative, Saleh Nasser Juma in the House of Representatives currently meeting at Chukwani area in Zanzibar.

He said the move aimed to improve doctors’ working conditions, adding that the government would continue to provide them with overtime allowances.
Kheir said the Isles government had embarked on a programme geared to improve public servants’ working conditions and increasing their salaries.
He said doctors’ monthly salaries were reviewed in the 2011/2012 financial year with a view to addressing the problem of most of them leaving the country for greener pastures abroad.
“We decided to increase salaries for doctors and specialists so as to retain them,” he noted.
Kheir said that last month there was a query between doctors and the government over benefits, but everything was resolved through talks.
He said doctors wanted the government to pay them allowances for housing and overtime, which has already been provided.
The Minister said doctors’ strike in Tanzania Mainland has affected Zanzibar residents who have been referred to the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH).
In his question, the Wawi representative had wanted to know measures being taken by the government to retain doctors leaving the country for greener pastures outside the country.
