Scania, Yutong battle for TZ market
Price factor
Some bus owners say they prefer Yutong to Scania bus models because the former are cheaper than the latter.
"With the level of poverty in Tanzania, it goes without saying that many would go for the cheaper option and that is what is happening in this market today," said a famous bus owner who requested anonymity because he did not want to appear on the paper. He revealed that though both Scania and Yutong buses were safe, the former was more expensive than the latter.
One needs between $140,000 (Sh224 million) and $250,000 (Sh400 million) to buy a Yutong model while the cheapest from Scania would cost above Sh400 million. "Imported Scania buses have all quality specifications as that of Yutong but they are sold expensively, so why should I purchase an expensive bus while there is one with the same quality sold at a cheaper price?" asked the bus owner.
Quality factor
On her side Ms Legga defended prices offered by her company saying their products were of a far more superior quality, adding that with new innovations going on, they will start manufacturing cheaper models.
"The price depends on which body the client wants to purchase, if one chooses the Marcopolo body its price will be higher as compared to the one with a Chinese body," said Ms Legga.
