WHO appoints (Dr Mwelecele Ntuli Malecela) new Director for the Department of Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases

08 October 2018 | Geneva -- Dr Mwelecele Ntuli Malecela has been appointed as the new Director of the WHO Department of Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases. Until her appointment, Dr Malecela was Director in the Office of the Regional Director, WHO Regional Office for Africa in Brazzaville, Congo where she provided policy, managerial and diplomatic advice to the Regional Director, coordinated and facilitated the plan of work for all units under the Cluster, and monitored the implementation of policy decisions of WHO governing bodies.

Dr Mwelecele Ntuli Malecela
Before joining WHO in April 2017, Dr Malecela served as the Director General of the National Institute for Medical Research, United Republic of Tanzania – the first woman to occupy this post – and as founding Director of the Tanzania Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination Programmme. She worked for more than two decades in the field of public health, including the National Institute for Medical Research in the field of lymphatic filariasis immunoepidemiology and has run successful programmes for lymphatic filariasis patients. Dr Malecela was instrumental in initiating the Integrated NTD control program in Tanzania in 2009.

Dr Malecela holds a BSc in zoology from the University of Dar es Salaam and an Msc and PhD in parasitology from the University of London (London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine). She specialized in filarial immunology, specifically mechanisms of filarial immune evasion.

She has served on various international committees including the Technical Advisory Group of the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis, the Mectizan Expert Committee and the advisory board of the Initiative on Public–Private Partnerships in Health. Dr Malecela also served as a member of the WHO Strategic and Technical Advisory Committee for Neglected Tropical Diseases and the Medicine in Need Steering Committee on Innovation, Alliance and Translation Management.

Dr Malecela has been involved in a number of philanthropic organizations and has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals.
