This is how things stand right now

This is how things stand right now as the Israel-Hamas war enters its third day:
  • The death toll has surpassed 1,100 in Israel and Gaza, as more than 100,000 Israel troops are currently amassing at the border to prepare for a possible ground offensive.
  • There are at least seven areas where the Israeli military is still battling Palestinian fighters.
  • Israel has launched a series of air raids pounding Gaza from all sides.
  • Hospitals in the besieged Palestinian enclave are overwhelmed with the number of injuries and the scale of the Israeli air attacks.
  • Israeli troops are trying to regain control of the desert around the Gaza Strip and evacuate people from the fence area.
UN says more that 123,000 displaced in Gaza
More than 123,000 people have been displaced in the Gaza Strip since the outbreak of the conflict between Palestinian fighters and Israel, according to the United Nations.

“Over 123,538 people, have been internally displaced in Gaza, mostly due to fear, protection concerns and the destruction of their homes,” said the UN’s humanitarian agency, OCHA.

Israeli reservists at odds with Netanyahu before October 7 assault by Hamas
According to the most recent estimates, Israel has an estimated 465,000 reservists, who can be called up to serve for up to as many as 60 days annually, to reinforce its relatively small but well-armed military to fight in the battlefield.

Following a formal declaration of war by the Israeli cabinet against Hamas, tens of thousands of reservists are being called to into active service, while an estimated 100,000 troops amass at its southern border with Gaza.

Recent political developments before the October 7 assault by Hamas, however, have pitting the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the reservists, as tens of thousands of them opposed his push of a judicial overhaul. Some have even skipped training in protest of Netanyahu.

Here’s a report about the protests against Netanyahu led by Israeli reservists.

UNRWA says it is sheltering 74,000 displaced people
The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) says the number of people forced to flee their homes in search of safety in Gaza has significantly increased to nearly 74,000 people overnight.

The agency said the displaced people were now in 64 UNRWA shelters, with numbers likely to increase as heavy shelling and air attacks continue, including in civilian areas.

“UNRWA teams are providing families with shelter and clean water. Supplies are being prepared to deliver to families, including food, hygiene kits and cleaning supplies,” it said in a statement.

“Civilians must be protected at all times, including during fighting … Schools and other civilian infrastructure, including those sheltering displaced families, must never come under attack.”

The UN says more than 123,000 people have been displaced in the Gaza Strip since the outbreak of the conflict.
