Let's look at some real examples of how badly our youngsters are lacking the skills needed to succeed.
Yesterday I received an email from a young man who has completed his bachelors degree in public relations and marketing at St. Augustine University of Tanzania.
This is what I got in the subject line and an attached cv. Nothing, absolutely nothing else.
No email of introduction, no covering letter, no salutations.
Now as an employer let me go through my thoughts on this.
1. I run a preschool. What need is there for me to have a public relations and marketing executive? Thereby leading me to think this young man has not bothered to research the companies he is sending out email to, he is merely sending emails to everyone. Do I want such a person in my organization? If there isn't a need and you do a great job in convincing me that there is (the very basics of good marketing), well done! You're good at your job. At least try.
2. As a public relations and marketing executive (I've been one), he shows a lack of basic skills such as communication, marketing (he hasn't done at all a good job in marketing himself), taking initiative, research skills, treating people and companies professionally, approaching people (essential in marketing), customer service and what we would think of as common business sense.
3. With no salutations, letter of introduction etc, my first though is this person is lazy, irresponsible and isn't interested in improving himself. (Thought this may not be the case, his first impression is awful).
I could go on and on. In stark contrast to this, I have received such wonderfully convincing emails and before even opening the cv attachment, 99% of the time I know it is from a Kenyan (generally) or another foreigner and I am usually right.
In some cases where I have received amazing CVs from Tanzanian teachers, I have called them in to find out that either:
1. They have studied abroad and come back to Tanzania or studied in an international school.
2. Someone else has written the cv and covering letter for them and they lack the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that I am looking for.
Do I blame this young man? To a certain extent yes. In today's competitive world, there is no excuses for such things. The Internet is a veritable treasure chest of knowledge and it's easy to access. In some ways though, I do blame the system as it is not equipping our youngsters with extremely basic skills and at the same time is creating a sense of entitlement in them which is making it difficult for them to hold down good jobs. Just IMO.

Umaskini wetu upo mfukoni, SIYO KICHWANI.
